Because of the silhouette in fashion and it's evil twin, fast fashion. The overwhelming viewpoint is that pockets add bulk to the hips and no woman wants to look like she's got bigger hips than she does. Keep in mind, this viewpoint is changing and more and more dresses are being constructed and shown on recent runways with pockets. So they are making a comeback, just like everything else. Fashion is not an island, it is a response.

I'm going to share a pocket solidarity story: My parents and I were traveling about 2 years ago. We all stayed in one hotel room. We had hung up some of our clothing in the little closet in our room. It was early in the morning and the room was dimly lit. My dad grabbed his pants and a shirt from the closet, went into the bathroom, showered, shaved, and changed. He comes walking out of the bathroom looking confused. He looks at my mom and asks, "Where did you buy these jeans? They're stretchy." I notice the bootcut leg and the butt pocket detail and start laughing right as he sticks his hands in the front pockets and they stop at the fingers. I informed him that the pants came from Target and are actually mine. He replied, "are all women's pants pockets this sad?" My mom and I confirmed, in unison. He changed into his own pants. We still laugh about it. He says he'll never again mock us for carrying large purses/backpacks when he couldn't even fit his empty money clip in the front pockets. 😂

All 3 items had been I his left front pocket all afternoon. A seam ripper tip - if you flip the seam ripper so the side with the ball is on the bottom when you're holding it, it protects the fabric along the sides of the seam from accidentally being cut or poked into. It also keeps you from stabbing yourself on the pointy end since it's now flush with the seam and angled down instead of hidden under it and pointed up, simply lying in wait to attack. I always add pockets in the clothes I make! My favorite pattern designer has taken to making sure her newer patterns have pockets, and they're generously sized, too. I always laugh if the pocket pattern says "optional" because to me there is no such thing.

Some pockets though, add bulk to the hip/butt area (which some of us have plenty of already...) I'm happy with an option for pockets, or pockets that aren't right at the widest part of my figure to make it look even wider.

Hate it. Pockets in girls clothes are pretty darn useless. They're usually quite shallow. I am constantly losing coins & chapstick when I sit down. So very annoying. Usually wear a petite crossbody purse that can hold phone, wallet, comb & lipstick. If I take public transportation, I also take a tote that will hold a bottle of water & a book.

I love this. So many gals make so much fuss about not having pockets. I'm over here going "Why did you buy clothes without them, or just put pockets in?' They do make women's jeans and skirts with pockets, every pair of jeans I've bought in the last 8 years have had nice big pockets. They are not as slim cut but they are comfy and I can carry my stuff. I either makes my skirts or buy vintage so I just put pockets in if they are something I would want a pocket on. I don't really bother with them as much since I have a really nice vintage purse collection I want to show off. For the most part just works skirts get them, or nice dresses that were planed from the ground up to have a pocket so it doesn't show.

If you were happy with the length on the red-heart dress, and it’s just the lining being too long that’s the issue, I wonder if you could add cute black lace to the end of the lining and have that peaking out of the bottom of the red outer layer? That might look really cute and save the effort and fabric to lengthen it.
@pooie01164 жыл бұрын
My thoughts as well. Or maybe add a little gathered tulle to the lining to peek out from under the hem of the skirt like a faux petticoat or crinoline.

Just a thought, if you have a dress or skirt without pockets that you don’t have the time/skills/inclination to ‘pocket’ wear a crossbody bag with it and keep it on all day. I just discovered your channel today and I am now inspired to take on this challenge myself. I have many garments with either no pockets or fake pockets which are just insulting to be quite honest. I think for any garment I sew, I will add in pockets were I can. Pockets are definitely something that can be taken for granted until you don't have them. I really appreciate your remark about caring for your clothes. It helps with longevity and continued love of what you wear. I am also really loving the whole movement with visible mending. Seeing how people are turning mending into an art is really neat and inspiring within itself.

Pockets are so important. I remember about 5 or so years ago when my cell phone was much much smaller and sturdier than the one I have now, when I could just slip it into the small pocket of my women's jeans... But as phones got bigger, pockets got smaller which makes absolutely no sense so now I want to extend all the pockets I have because okay in wintertime you wear a ton of layers and you have enough pockets, but if you think I'm going to carry my phone in my hand all summer long you're mistaken.

This is such a great idea. It's a great way to use up smaller scraps of fabric you may have and to make your items more wearable. I love that you did big practical pockets! It's annoying to have garments without pockets but even worse to have tiny pockets that don't actually fit anything. Or fake pockets. Those make me extremely angry lol. The heart pockets are so amazing. I haven't seen anything quite like that before. They turned out super cute.

Patches CAN be great. Several years ago I made a scrappy Christmas quilt top for my sister and handed it off to a friend with a new long arm machine to quilt. She ripped a hole in the backing during the quilting process and was devastated. I told her it was no big deal. I cut a circular patch with a tiny printed teddy bear centered on it. I stitched the patch on by hand with a blanket stitch. Voila! A design feature, no longer identifiable as a repair. IF you decide to fix the flirty red dress, some beading could make the patch look like an intentional part of the design.
