Real ones will recognize that bro clutched up and did his first granary mid jump between vids. Awesome job goat

really looking forward to this project, i like that low poly style and rocket jumping has always been a interesting ability in videogames, hope the development is going well

super excited about this. also that launcher model is really cute!

Exciting stuff. I'm sure I'm not alone in saying that I learned to rocket jump with the offset of the stock rocket launcher. If this project is ever released I will enjoy the QOL of being able to toggle between either style!

Definitely this. I’ve never used the original honestly and I’m afraid my muscle memory will me ravaged from switching between games.

would this game of yours help train with rocket jumping in tf2?

it looks and way easier and funner for sure

A lot of the overarching concepts will be very similar to TF2, though I'm trying to strip out a lot of the needlessly complex mechanics. In that way, general knowledge of basic rocket jumping mechanics will probably carry between games, but there are some things that won't. I think those differences make the game more approachable and fun, but if you want those intricate complexities you'll have to play TF2.

I think this project is cool but I will have to suggest some things I think would be really important to consider. 1. Why isn't the bhop able to be continued if you hold down spacebar? I think that would be a way better idea than having it be each individual jump. If you want to get an idea of how this works, you can watch airaccel + bhop rocket jump map runs where they are able to go just about as fast as you are going in this video but with much more ease. 2. I know you are not at this point yet but I would make rocket trails minimal, maybe a sprite or something or have an option to make them transparent. There's nothing worse than not knowing what's going on because of your rocket smoke which is something I really dislike in TF2 and modded out of the game for sometime. Also, for blast visualizers, give the option to represent the blast as a particle (minimal) or as it's entire radius as I think some people would prefer not having explosions particles in their face when they pogo. 3. The fire-rate is too fast and you will probably change it to be more TF2-esque but right now I can just image insane syncs and wall-jumps that make maps really unfun if you are just allowed to just brainlessly shoot the wall. 4. Sliding is an interesting mechanic for a rocket jump game but I don't really think it has strong applications in traditional rocket jump maps. Maybe have a conveyer-belt style map where you have to choose between sliding and jumping to scale over obstacles or make it give you extra speed when you are going down a slope? Otherwise it will be tricky to have maps that don't completely ignore it in my opinion. 5. Add a railgun sidegrade so you can shoot buttons that open doors. I hope development goes very well! :)

I appreciate the feedback and I'll definitely consider these, though I expect that I'm not going to include an auto bunnyhop function in the game. I believe there was a split in the CSS bhop community when they began to allow auto bhop instead of requiring people to use scroll wheel, because even though scroll wheel is not the perfect bunnyhopping system in this respect, it required players to time their inputs in some way and that decision removed a fundamental aspect of the game. I go over my bunnyhopping implementation in my first devlog, but the short version is that there's a buffer that allows a perfect bhop when jump is pressed just before you land. I think this is the perfect bunnyhopping implementation since it combines the best parts of auto and scroll wheel by requiring a sense of timing while being perfectly consistent in a way that scroll wheel can't be. The only big downside I see is that people using auto bhop cheats can generally skirt by undetected when auto isn't a "legal" option, but this is something I think I'll just try to find solutions for as I get to implementing related functions like replays. Your other suggestions are definitely important and I will need to consider them as I get into designing levels, so thanks for taking the time to comment.

I would consider alternative movement modes as well as rocket jumping. Something I found very fun in DOOM Eternal, for example, was the massive recoil from the Ballista, which combined with its abysmal fire rate and relatively short weapon switch times allowed for very interesting combinations for movement. Perhaps as alternative game modes, with some extra weapons and weapon switching to, say, dry sync + recoil through a relatively small gap in a high wall. Definitely for a more action-oriented mapping setting though. Don't make the rocket launcher too ossified of a part of the architecture, because I think alternative weapon options (even a sticky/pipe launcher maybe?) would be very fun.
