Hello folks
In an unexpected turn of events, I stumbled upon an old Elcon fan that had met an unfortunate fate in a dumpster. Abandoned and devoured by rats, it appeared to be a lost cause at first glance. However, intrigued by the potential hidden beneath the grime and damage, I decided to take on the challenge of restoring this relic to its former glory.
Undeterred by the daunting task ahead, I began by meticulously cleaning the fan, removing layers of dirt and rat-inflicted damage. With each stroke of the brush, the fan's true features started to emerge, hinting at the beauty it once possessed.
After carefully disassembling the fan, I realized that rust had taken its toll on the metal components. To rectify this, I opted for a sandblasting technique, which gently stripped away the corrosion, leaving behind a clean and smooth surface ready for rejuvenation. Witnessing the transformation unfold as the rust faded away brought a sense of hope and renewed motivation to my restoration endeavor.
With the fan now free from rust and grime, the next step was to protect its exterior from future deterioration. I decided to give it a fresh lease on life through a process known as powder coating. This involved applying a fine powdered pigment to the fan's surface, which would then be baked onto the metal, forming a durable and vibrant coating.
As I watched the fan being immersed in the powder coat booth, the once-forgotten Elcon fan was being revived right before my eyes. Once the powder settled onto the surface, it was time for the fan to enter the oven, where heat would fuse the particles together, resulting in a resilient and stunning finish.
When the fan emerged from the oven, I was awestruck by its transformation. The dull, battered object that I had discovered in the dumpster had now been reborn into a radiant piece of vintage art. Its natural beauty had been resurrected, captivating both the eye and the imagination.
With the final step of reassembling the fan, I experienced a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. The resurrected Elcon fan stood proudly, breathing life into a forgotten era. A testament to the power of restoration and the value of preserving history, this fan now held a special place in my heart, reminding me of the potential beauty that can be found even in the most unlikely of places.

I can remember a time before there were zip ties. Technicians had to secure or bundle wires together or in place with twine... Seeing you cut the strings brought back those memories. We had to learn special knots & how to bundle long runs of wires. It was somewhat like doing macrame. Times have certainly changed.

@@Austeration I have one fan with a big chip out of the blade, I want to repair it, it is a type of plastic, not metal. I thought about patching it with an epoxy type resin, I'm not sure it will hold with the movement and vibration. The only other options are having a piece made by 3D printing or finding an old fan blade of a similar size. Any thoughts?
@Austeration
@Austeration Жыл бұрын
@@shainazion4073 thanks very much for the sub Shaina. Sounds like your dad would put his hand to anything that needed repairing. What colour is the blade ? A good product to use is JB weld but this is black so it may not match. I think if you 3D print the missing piece you may still have issues attaching it to the blade. Balancing the blade after may be an issue if the weight is different. Finding a replacement might be your best option. But if you can't find anything doing a repair will have to do. Try your best and don't be afraid to fail. Most people don't even try because they are afraid of messing things up. If you do fail don't look at it as a fail look at it as successfully finding out your first idea didn't work and try something else.

I remember my parents had a black base with golden blades and cage when I was 6 . They got rid of it when my little brother stuck his fingers in to touch the fan blade. He cut his fingers bad but didn't loose any. That's the only fault with the fan,too large a space between the wires.

Thanks for watching Demetrius. I use a system called z wave. All the switches have to be linked back to a hub and then control by my phone or Alexa. There as so many different simple types of of switches on the market though that don't need a hub to be operated. Hope this helps 👍

That is debatable mohinder, the grease is not going to move around inside the gearbox like oil would, as long as all the moving parts are lubricated it should be fine. Great question 👍

Great video! But 1 thing of note. It seems that your blast media is a little weak. Either you was using very fine media and need to switch to a more course one or air pressure just is not enough. From what I could tell it's more of the media type. Also, under the 2 brass fittings on the rotating assembly are the 2 cloth tube things. These should be soaked in oil to provide a continuous lube. Sorry, not nit picking, but just thought you may want to know. Other than these things the video and restoration was great!
@Austeration
@Austeration 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Sounds like you have some experience with old fans do you? I assumed the felt tubes are there to soak up any oil that may come from the bronze bushes. I didn't see how oil was going to climb up the felt and get inside the bush as the bush it's self is not spinning Not saying your wrong, that's just the way a saw it. I think I need to replace the media in my blaster, the unit itself has never really been fantastic. Please check out some of my other projects if you have time. Cheers 👍
@3210gatorbite
@3210gatorbite 11 ай бұрын
I dabble a little into restoration of all things. As for the brass peices they kook like oilite fittings. They are a porous type of brass that holds oil inside itself. Though these ones are quite old and seem to have glossed over. The contact point with the cloth tube acts like a wicker effect and literally pulls the oil up into the brass. Think like an oil lamp and its wick. As to your other videos, this one is the first one I've seen from your channel, but when I have time I will look at the others.
@Austeration
@Austeration 11 ай бұрын
@@3210gatorbite cheers yes I cleaned them up and soaked them in oil for over a week. I ran them in the sonic bath to see if it would help the oil soak in. I understand your point of view about the wicks.
