The same thing happened to the massive great western railway workshops at Swindon in the mid 80's under general sir Maggie Thatcher when British rail engineering limited announced that much of the huge complex was being shut down. Swindon built many of the Great western locos and both freight and passenger rolling stock. The announcement came in the midst of G.W.R 150 yr celebrations. Many events were planned including events at Swindon,but were forced to be abandoned following the announcement.
