I was visiting Weiden in der Oberpfalz, Germany, and learned that he grew up there. So now im listening to this piece of his music. It is quite lovely!

Gorgeous. One cannot go from Strauss and Mahler to Schoenberg without becoming familiar with Reger, the most proficient composer of the post-Romantic era, highly chromatic, yet still firmly tonal.

A very underrated piece of music.

Almost everything of Reger is underrated. It is an extreme music: each beat is carefully prepared to be an unexpected harmonic effect. It's very difficult to keep the tunes in mind, on the contrary of Beethoven, Schumann etc. But is very rewarding to listen to carefully.

My favourite composer! The complexity of His music is so fascinating. The organ works are brilliant as well!

This shows a fact which is not commonly acknowledged: Reger was a fabulous orchestrator.

This mesmerizing music is good for my soul: there are no answers, - what were the questions? - only a state of mind that isn't easily understood. This music just shows the state of mind, to me it has eternal value.

I'm enjoying this work on a pleasant Sunday afternoon in the autumn. The second movement waltz could go on for ever . . .

Reger once replied to a particularly hateful critic: 'Sir, I am in the smallest room in my house with your critique in front of me. Soon it will be behind me'.

Interesting. Chagrined to admit I'd never heard of Max Reger until stumbling upon this, which just popped up amidst the usual KZbin selections at the end of another piece I had just listened to. Glad I checked it out. I figured anything Essa-Pekka Salonen thinks worthwhile needs to be heard. Thanks for posting this and introducing me to a composer previously unknown. Being the obsessive I am, now I shall have to search for and listen to other of Max Reger's works. :)

Je ne connaissais pas cette musique, je la découvre avec plaisir : quelle belle inspiration, et l'orchestration de Reger est d'une si grande finesse, un orfèvre.

The third movement states and also suggests -- has an earthly mood then an elfin feeling, and enigmatic, personal quality -- quotes from Tristan and Isolde at 26:54-27:02 -- hints of tragic love then triumphal end . . .

Regers Romantische Suite op. 125 und der 2. Satz aus der Böcklinsuite op. 128 sind wohl die ersten und m.E. auch besten Kompositionen des deutschen musikalischen Impressionismus.

Reger's strange lyric was not properly understood in his time. And our times don't allow us either to develop adequate sensitivity (die Stimmung) for this music of eternal timing... Armer Reger! Eternally doomed to eternal being misunderstood... Even so very lovely music.

Salonen surely interprets this work "romantically", with a lush sound that does bring out all its' beauty; but he misses the thrust and energy also contained in the score, and the elfin quality of the second movement is gone. A well-controlled flaccidity tends to allow Reger's fine effort to fall apart from lack of momentum. Reger isn't Bruckner after all, although he has never sounded more like him, especially at the passage beginning at 24:32 here. I really don't think that Salonen understands Reger's music.
