This strategy involves using physical objects to represent the numbers being added. For example, if you are adding 7 + 3, you would lay out 7 objects, and then count out 3 more objects and add them to the 7. This would give you a total of 10 objects.
Using a 10-frame to count and add:
A 10-frame is a grid with 10 boxes, and is often used to help young children understand place value. When using a 10-frame to add within 10, the numbers being added would be represented by dots in the boxes. For example, if you are adding 7 + 3, you would put 7 dots in 7 of the boxes, and then 3 dots in 3 of the boxes. This would give you a total of 10 dots in the 10-frame.

Number bonds are a way of representing numbers using addition. For example, the number 7 can be represented as a number bond like this: 7 = 4 + 3. This means that 7 is made up of 4 + 3, or 4 plus 3. When using number bonds to add within 10, the numbers being added would be represented by the number bonds
