Hello alan, this is simply amazing. professional content and chanel online. Very very similar to my case. I also learned a lot from this video. For example, I realized that my timing was wrong and also I tried to pick up the pace quickly to avoid the lunging. Can you give again the brand of the slip/dominant you use? People don't understand what a difficult struggle it is to walk with a Malinois or other working dog that is also reactive to dogs. Hope I can learn more from you about proper walking with the dog outside. Thanks again

Hi Ali, Really appreciate your input and wanted to let you know I will be doing more on this subject matter in the near future! The brand of the slip/dominant collar is from Dog Sports Designs in Lincoln, California. Valerie is the owner/maker of equipment and she may reference me in conjunction with this collar - i.e. Alan Miller Favorite. When ordering I encourage people to oversize the collar by 2 or 3 inches so it can also be used as a safety backup for a pinch collar. If you reside within the USA the website link is: www.dogsportsequipment.com/ . If you reside outside of the USA the link to her equipment is: www.etsy.com/listing/1547653729/fitted-slip-collar-alan-millers-favorite . Also, her email address for any additional questions is: val@dogsportsequipment.com

Great video. I’m so glad I found your channel. Can you explain how to handle a small dog? Most videos online show techniques with big dogs, but I have a bichon that is very small, but reactive. I. Annot hold the leash close to his neck since he is so low to the ground. He is 6 years old, and we adopted him 5 months ago from a puppy mill, so he (we) needs some help. Any tips would be appreciated. Many thanks for great videos.

Hello @MyDogRunner You're welcome! We are enjoying making the videos. Regarding your Bichon - there are several things I want you to try. 1: If you do get a dominant collar ( www.dogsportsequipment.com/ & www.etsy.com/listing/1547653729/fitted-slip-collar-alan-millers-favorite) make sure it's on the skinny side (1/4" or 3/8") leather. The collar needs to sit at the highest point on the neck and then snug the keeper down. This enables you to correct the reactive behavior from a standing position. When you see your dog reaching the threshold of impulse to react, I want you to pull straight up on the leash - not backwards or laterally - just until the dog reacts to the pressure you are applying, then release and repeat. Make sure to praise when the dog looks away. If the dominant collar causes excessive coughing - stop using it. 2: Also, I have had success in using a petroleum or cream based taste deterrent (like Vick's vapor rub or any sports rub) on the dogs lips to provide an interruption from the bad behavior. Another option is using peanut butter on the roof of the mouth. Again, this causes an interruption to negative behavior. 3: I have had very good success with Halti Head Harness (amzn.to/3SeluLu). It will be a size '0' for your Bichon. You might have to custom tailor it slightly to fit properly. 4: Remote Training Collars have changed everything in the dog training world. If you are open to this concept, I would use a Dogtra Mini IQ (amzn.to/3s861BR) with the receiver on the back of the neck very snug. First find the baseline - meaning where does the dog initially feel the vibration or tens stimulation. Then I would put the dog on a long leash (10' to 15') and let the dog go out to the end of the leash. Present a target, say nothing and adjust the stimulation level accordingly until the dog respects the interruption. This should make your dog come back to you or question it's behavior. Your job is to be indifferent to the correction as if you didn't know what happened. If your dog comes back to you, lots of praise and love. I have had great success with this last method when working with small dogs such as French Bulldogs & Boston Terriers. Please let me know if any of this is unclear and you need further explanation. Would be happy to schedule a video consult with you and we could get into details.

@@AlanMillerDogTrainingThank you so much for your thoughtful reply! The new slip collar arrived today, and I can’t wait to start adding it to the training. Thank you for the tips - sometimes the littlest dogs have a very big attitude! He’s very sweet with us, but reactive towards others in some situations. I will do my best to take your advice to heart and give it all a try. 😊

So how long would you have to technically do this before you can walk your dog loose leash and not have any reactivity? Ultimately the goal is to be able to walk loose leash in a somewhat close proximity but having to constantly have pressure like that without any way of teaching a dog to focus on you won’t help long-term

Thank you for the question! The dogs in the video (recorded 3 month ago) are now a part of my intermediate dog training classes. In these classes we are working towards titling their dogs in obedience trials past the novice level (off - leash). The time it takes to get past the reactivity problem is different for each dog because of variances in temperament. Redirecting the dog towards positive rewards (i.e. fetch, food, petting, praise) can only happen after the impulse control issues are managed. I know this is a brief answer, but hope this helps. If you would like to correspond more on this subject, feel free to reach out again.

@@AlanMillerDogTraining thank you so much! I’m wanting to get into some obedience trials but everything is so far away haha hopefully I can find something one day! Definitely helps and I appreciate the reply! I tend to work with more rescues that have reactivity or some sort of behavioral issue in one way or another so it’s nice to go the rescues a bit of a timeline(wanted to make sure I was appropriate in my timeframe as well) but training is never ending!
