Just a friendly suggestion...blood meal is wonderful but it take 1 to 2 months to be available to the plants. I would purchase a water soluble fertilizer that you can pour directly around and onto the foilage of your plants. This will give them an almost immediate boost while the blood meal has time to work it's magic!

On Three Rivers Homestead video yesterday, she commented that she grew Comfrey which is Nitrogen dense plant and as the plant grows she harvests the large lower leaves and lays them out around/between her plants to provide a nitrogen dense compostable resource. The plant is also nice looking as a leafy green in the garden-scape. It seemed the herbal purpose of Comfrey appeared to be secondary for her.

Becky you only use your funnels for canning.Don't ➕ contaminated get funnels from the dollars store and used for your separated then your fertilizer put them in the bag then you don't have to look for them also store all feed in containers with lids so bugs or little creatures don't get in to them . Also closed your door to the feeding rooms so no creatures will make a home in them . I learned the hard way I had squirrel in my shed my walk in basement little mice then moles tried to dig thru my windows wells into my basement. I had to get an exterminator to solve my problems. I love birds also but the crows took most of the food and made a home in my attic . Once a blue Jay flew into my house that was fun to get it out . I loved everything your doing if I was younger I would do it too. Bless you and your family. I only suggesting these things because no one every told me .🤍😇❤️👍

I think when you amended the garden a few months ago, you said your test said one package per 100 ft sq. And that your beds are 64 ft. Sq. That is about 2/3 of 100 feet (66.6 feet is 2/3 of 100). But you only put half that amount when you amended the beds, 1/3 package per bed which would have been about 33 ft. Squared. This is why there isn't enough nitrogen in your soil, you end up not putting in enough originally, by half of what you should have put in.
@TillmanHouse62

I’m making that salad! You should use your chicken poop in the wintertime for your beds if you don’t plant anything in them for about 4 months. The chicken poop isn’t “hot” after that and just lightly till your soil before you plant. It really helped our plants this year. Another suggestion for the peanut butter would be to use your food processor to grind up your peanuts. Make your own peanut butter!🙂

Hi Becky. I made the same assumption of using Blood Meal (Nitrogen) and found out that onions need Bone Meal (high in Calcium and Phosphorus). "Bone meal fertilizer is an ideal soil additive for growing carrots, beets, potatoes, and other root crops." I switched to bone meal and my onions, radishes and scallions were huge. Also, our property has weed issues and I put down cardboard and covered with mulch. This technique might help suppress the weeds under the tree so you don't have to pull weeds every week. Good Luck!!!

Love your back yard & garden Becky and your planters are gorgeous! I did the same mistake with my bird feeder but here in Texas everything is already burning up. This was my third year gardening and I think I've found the perfect soil recipe because my garden did fantastic. It's all raised beds and grow bags, I amended the soil with mushroom compost, black cow and some fresh quality soil. In each hole I added a handful of blood meal, bone meal, organic fertilizer, worm castings and azomite. It sounds extra but every single plant turned out beautiful and I only once added a little extra tomato tome to the tomatoes. All 26 varieties produced like crazy to the point that I finally had to purchase a real Italian tomato press! MI gardener said the secret to beans is when they are about 4 inches tall to hit them with a fair amount of nitrogen (same with onions, actually onions is every two weeks) and I had copious amounts of Contender beans. Happy Gardening!

When you are making a massive salad, and you know the dressing will be too little for your taste for all of it, you should halve it before adding the dressing so you can either make another batch of the dressing for the second half, or try a different dressing for the same salad ingredients - sort of a planned over meal.

Blood meal is best when nothing is on your bed during winter. It does take a few month for the blood meal to do its job. Fish emulsion is good and fast acting. My husband makes a tea from blood meal, fish emulsion, worm castings, black strap molasses, epson salt and just general natural fertilizers, lets it brew for 24 hours...then waters beds the enxt day. During winter months i also put all my scraps in the beds and by spring, its all nroke down. When i can get out in the garden after snow has stopped flying, i put amendments in it again. You use organic items, it will not hurt as much as you use. Each veggie has different needs. Start studying this winter and keep a notebook...

Oh Becky your yard and garden is breathtakingly beautiful. I think one of the best things you did was cut down all the overgrown trees back there and replant beautiful shade trees. Now you have all of that natural sunlight. If that were my patio I would spend as much time as I could everyday and enjoy that view. You made some good choices for your landscape and garden. I so envy your raised beds. At my age my knees hurt so much and I love the height of your raised beds too. No more earth garden for me unless I’m growing corn or okra.

A bird bath is a great way to watch the birds. I fill mine regularly and see multiple birds everyday. And it’s only about 1 foot tall so it looks very nice in with the hostas around it

SAME. I only put food out during the winter months and AWAY from ANY landscaping, more for their benefit than for our 'watching' benefit, but I keep our multiple birdbaths full from April through November & we've found that's the BEST way to watch bird behavior. The baths have CONSTANT activity and it's such a joy to see how they all interact with each other.

I'm just sitting here listening to you talk about soil and about how if everything doesn't produce in your first year garden, and crying because I've been struggling so much with enough nutrients in my greenstalk. But it's year one, I can try again next year 😭 Thank you for the encouragement, your struggles have given me so much insight this year in how to research, and how to move forward.

Thanks for sharing that bird app, Becky! I recently moved to the countryside and see sooo many birds I never knew existed. This will help MY 'inner old lady' to know what birds are visiting my yard 😊 I hope it will be able to identify all the birds in my region 🇯🇲

I don't know if you have a Dollar Tree local to you, but I went to mine and bought measuring cups, spoons, and funnels that are designated just for my garden, then I don't have to look for them, etc. It made it so much easier for me.

Liquid fertilizer is a far quicker way of getting Nitrogen and other goodness into the soil. Still use the granulated one but use a liquid one for quicker nutrients to get into your garden. You will be ok, I'm glad you are fixing the issues when you see them

In the fall & spring look at cover crops. They have definitely helped with soil health as well as errousioun. My soil used to be horrible but cover crops have changed my soil for the better. Adding mushroom compost too.

I am an avid bird lover and feeder. Best advice: feed straight black oil sunflower seeds. All that millet growing - it’s seed the birds pick out to get to the sunflower, which is what they like the most. We buy a bag at Costco every few months and I’ve never had it sprout. The just eat it and no seeds are left to grow! Suet is also fun to put out, but you should look into making it at home because you definitely have the resources and it can be super fun!

Forgot to add that we also have a thistle feeder out for goldfinch and we make sure to buy a small bag of thistle feed for it that doesn’t sprout. They don’t go through it very fast and I have a skinny, small thistle feeder, but the goldfinch are so pretty and they love it!

I second this comment! This is exactly what I do. Yes, black oil sunflower seed is more expensive than the “cheap” birdseed but the cheap seed has fillers in it that most birds won’t eat. At least with the black oil sunflower seed most birds will eat and it’s almost no waste. I’m happy to see another avid bird lover out there :)

The bird seed we used also dropped and caused little plants to sprout. We had 1 sunflower (which was mowed down by a deer) and a ton of corn. My husband wants to see what's gonna happen so we're just letting it do it's thing haha.

Years ago I belonged to a birding group. They recommended only putting out water for the birds, hummingbirds solution for them. Only feed the other birds in the winter when food is scarce. You do not wash to train them to getting their food from you. They need to forge like nature intended. You can put up houses for various types you want to attract

I agree with other comments, you need a liquid nitrogen to get them healthy quicker. The bloodmeal will take a long time to be available for plants. That fish and kelp liquid fertilizer you used for your starts would be perfect to use on a weekly basis for a bit to get them going.

One thing you can do for future soil health is to put a worm bucket in each bed. You can put some of your kitchen compost in them for greens and shredded paper for the brown

I have large barrels for water in my kitchen garden. One of them I put a little at the side and make "plant tea" in it. Natural fertilizer from comfrey, stinging nettles and sometimes a bunch of other weeds and a couple handfulls of chicken or cow manure from the coop/barn. It smells...interesting...when it starts to break down but that is just for a short while. When broken down I mix it with water, 1/10, and water with it 1-2 times/month. Never had any problem with yellow plants or over fertilizing.

Becky, when feeding the birds be careful chicken feed and wild bird seed brings mice, moles and rats. We stopped feeding them due to this problem as we live in a very rural area.

I grew up very rural. We never fed birds or anything and always had mice....because we lived surrounded by field. Seed or no seed, mice will be there. Yes, it may give them an extra reason to come around, but not having it won't stop them.

@@MrsBrit1 Actually that's really good advise, I live rurally and my neighbour fed the birds, six months later we were over run with rats, they were nesting in the gardens and breeding at an incredible rate. A guaranteed food source is what they like. Only feed in winter, if you must and use a special feeder and fat balls.

They were gathering and eating and hiding food in our home. It was just a friendly warning everyone that's all. Please let this end here. So sorry I said anything.
