Of course, I know that I don't actually know you and all of who you are, just saying that I appreciate your presence on the internet and stuff. So positive and inspirational! I have all of the respect for your ability to set boundaries and stick with what is best for you no matter what other people say, and I think that how you've been running your channel has been just fine!

Hi Fernhaven! Your comment was incredibly sweet to read and I really do appreciate you saying all of that! 🤗 💕 Boundaries are a very important thing to have online, because it's too easy to get wrapped up in doing what other people want and not staying true to yourself and your own needs. Thanks for being understanding and supportive!

I loved Sumatra and Yodel so much 💕 I tried finding your channel a while ago but I couldn't remember the name and I'm gonna rewatch a bunch of your old videos! I remember getting so exited whenever you posted and would run around the house like a crazy person (I was only 7 😅) Now I have my own Syrian Hamster and his name is Sushi! Hi Donna and thank you! She really was and it was enjoyable to watch her blossom over time. Their short lifespans are a double-edged sword sometimes. The longer we have them, the more attached we get, but yet it's always hard to say goodbye so soon. I guess like Dr. Suess says: "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened." That's how I feel about all of the hamsters I've been able to love through the years. :')

Hi HoppingHammy! I remember when you had Carob and you had a 1yr hiatus before you had Kashi. I just want to say take as much time as you need. When my Padme passed away 6 months ago I decided on not getting another hamster because I can’t stand mourning every year each time I get a hamster and they have such short lifespans. Some people process loss differently from others so please take your time and remember all the great times you had with little Kashi.

Glad you've taken time for yourself, and are being honest with your own needs. I started watching when you first got Kashi so I'm not super sure of how your schedule was before that, but I'm glad you're not making videos just because you feel like you have to. Especially since you've cultivated such a niche channel, it can be hard to step away from that. I'm quite curious as to what these other interests are that you're trying to focus on, and if they're something you'd be willing to put up on your channel?

Hey! Thanks so much for understanding and giving your support! It means a lot. 🤗 I did used to post a new video every 4-6 days when this channel was at it's "peak," so to say. Those were good times, but my life is a little different now and I don't feel interested in posting videos as often anymore. To answer your question about other interests, I actually have a second channel called "HoppinglyEverAfter" where I share the videos of my other interests. I'm interested in so many different things!....ballet, photography, fashion, home decorating, hauls, and cosplay. If that sounds like anything you would enjoy watching, feel free to check it out and subscribe! Thanks again for taking time to leave your kind comment. 💕

I hope you deal well with comments about getting a new hamster, personally I'd get a bit frustrated. I know how difficult it is to deal with loss and it takes a while to recover and prepare for a new furball. Or sometimes you just need to take a break from them and that's okay ♥ Also, since you talked about their lifespan I wanted to share that my dwarf hamster passed away aged 5 in 2017. Very grateful I could have her for so long (: Your videos educated me a lot

I love watching your videos, you're just so positive and inspiring to me! I started watching just recently when I got my first hamster. We didn't get to bond that much because she was already like 1 year and a half. We took her because one of our family friends couldn't take care of her anymore because allergies, and some family issues. We tried to give her the best home we could, and wanted her to be comfortable and able to live a good life. Sadly she passed away just recently in March. She most likely didn't have any health issues, it was probably age, but I still miss her! We plan on getting another, not yet but maybe in a little less than a year. I hope you are doing well without Kashi and I know how much she meant to you. I respect your decision to wait a while to get another hammy. I watch your other channel HoppinglyEverAfter and I love watching your content! You taught me so much about how to take care of my hammy and love her. Thank you so much! I hope you stay safe and positive like always! 💖

I am glad that you healed from Kashi so fast! I am definitely going to stick around, and always will no matter what. (: I love watching your videos whether you have a hamster or not. I stick around because you are creative, have good quality, are fun to watch, nice, and have one of the best personalities ever. The cute hamsters are always a nice bonus, but I am here for you, and your videos. (: I have noticed that your channel has changed and I don't mind. Change is good. I can't really see the cages in the back, but they look so good. I am soooo excited to see the tour. I still don't think I am up to posting henry's tribute. I know it has been like 3 months but those are really hard to make. All of yours have been beautiful. I will miss Kashi and all of her cuteness, but yes, she had an AMAZING LIFE. I am collecting more and more hamster toys/ decorations, and am building skills, and one day I hope I can make good cage themes like you. (: I am also working on photography and videography. The only block in the road is struggling to find a good cheap editor. I had one, but it doesn't work anymore. I tried pinnacle studio and really like it. But those editors are expensive, so I am saving up (: I have a good camera though. How about you? How is your weekend going? I wasn't there when you say your channel was at its " Peak" But i have watched all the videos. And I am equally happy with your channel now. It also it totally fine that your are not getting a hamster. I totally understand, and it important to take care of yourself and heal first. I am the type of person that likes to get a new hamster soon, because I get hammy withdraws, and this may sound weird, but having muffin has really helped me heal. But not everybody is like that and that is 100 % okay. Okay enough rambling. I I am always here if you need someone to talk to, and I hope you have a good rest of your day and weekend.
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, thank you for your very long comment Hopalong! I know sometimes you mention not having the energy to type much (which I can relate to a lot! ) but thank you for taking time to type that! Don't feel bad about not making a tribute for Henry if you aren't able to. What matters most is the memories you have in your heart. 💗 🤗 To be honest I had considered not making a video of Kashi's tribute, simply because they can be really difficult to make. I literally cried the entire time I was editing. 😭 But in a strange way it is also therapeutic and healing, so I felt much better afterwards. I hope you can find lots of supplies and decorations for your cage themes! It sure can become addicting to find and buy things for our hamsters. I might have gotten carried away doing that through the years hehe 😂 😂 Thank you for being so supportive and understanding. I can see how having Muffin would help you to heal, so I'm glad for you in that way! :) Take care and have a nice rest of your day also!

I’ve noticed that the more years go by with my owning various animals it’s easier and easier and when they pass- however I think it’s more of a desensitizing thing? Being an exotic pet owner for 13 years I’ve faced a lot of death and when that happens you just kind of learn to block it out /: but a couple years or months later it just kind of hits you in the face and you break down. It’s sad that a lot of animals don’t live longer but the time we spend with them is always worth it :) take care of your self sometimes the grief sneaks up on you and hits you when it’s least expected.

Why do hamsters live shorter life spans now? And where do you get your hamsters, because although I would love to get a Syrian from a breeder we don’t have any hamster breeders here so what do you suggest. Can someone please help? My hamsters eye is not popping out and is closed halfway, should I be worried? Hes not exitbiting and strange signs and acting normal.. I think theres a bit of fluid on the eye but my family doesnt have enough money to take it to the vet. Is it an eye infection? Hes almost two and a half years I've never had a hamster this long so I dont know if it's old age
@jimicook864 жыл бұрын
It could be old age or he could have poked his eye on something. It’s most likely not a big deal just try to see if it gets swollen or worse.
@violethaye69874 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky situation to be in.. is there any way you or your family could save up enough money to take your hamster to an exotic vet? It's hard to make an accurate guess online. Here are possible causes: 1. eye infection, you can tell if there's goopy gunk stuff around the eye or any discharge 2. allergic to bedding, if it's scented pine or cedar shavings. maybe even dust 3. your hamster accidentally poked himself in the eye while grooming 4. There could be something (an object) in his eye. 5. He could be sleepy and that's just how he wakes up. I honestly think my best guess is that it's number 1, an eye infection based on your bit of fluid/liquid description. If his eye has returned back to normal by now though, then that's a relief.

I think this is great. It's really important to focus on other hobbies or new interests...and that's okay. As you've seen from my instagram I took a very hard and random leap into the world of Tarantulas...Which shocked a lot of my followers and I lost a lot of them. But I'm happier. I still love hamsters but this is a nice break after 15+ years of rodents. I'll still be around as always and I can't wait to see what's next for you

Hey! Yes I've seen your photos and I think it's great you've found another type of pet that you are enjoying, as a change from hamsters. I'm sure some of your followers weren't keen on that, but that's fine since it's your life and you need to do what is necessary to be happy! I also think that as much as we might love and adore one type of animal, sometimes there is a season of burnout after years and years. Delving into something completely new and different can be exactly the therapy needed! Best wishes to you and your critters and thanks for sticking around!

hello please respond to this it is very important, last night at 10pm i went to check on my syrian hamster. he usually wakes up at 9pm and this was really unusual (i had not seen him the entire day, he usually gets up a few times during the day for about 5 minutes to get water). i made some noise to try and wake him up but he didn’t respond. i saw his back leaning against the cage. i opened his cage and i wiggled the bedding so i didn’t scare him, no response. i then slowly moved the bedding away from him so i wouldn’t spook him. i see him and then i touch him, his body is completely stiff. he is dead. i freaked out and asked a family member to help me because i couldn’t think straight. they picked him up and his body was frozen in the position he fell asleep in. i checked for breathing, nothing. i know it wasn’t torpor because my room is not cold and he has 6 inches of paper based bedding where he was burrowing. i’m heartbroken because it was out of nowhere. the day before he was perfectly fine, he has a bin cage, 12 in wheel, good bedding, water, toys, hides, and proper food. the day before this happened he woke up in the middle of the day to get water, then i saw him moving his bedding to his nest by putting it in his mouth (i had also given him strips of toilet paper). i’m thinking he died because he choked on his bedding/toilet paper (i use kaytee clean and cozy). i’m so sad because he showed no signs of illness and he was living a happy life. i don’t know what else could have caused this. do you have any ideas? is kaytee actually safe? did i do something wrong? please respond ❤️ thank you.
@ruokay91264 жыл бұрын
You have done a amazing job at providing the best care and a proper wheel, unfortunately these things just happen and often suddenly hammies are masters at hiding illnesses until it’s to late, but feel happy that you gave your hammie the best life you could! And I use kaytree and it’s been fine so far and safe, but if it you feel like it isn’t safe then that’s fine 😊

Hamster Police aw thank you so much ❤️ i’ve been researching some common things that can cause death in young hamsters, one of them was heart failure. considering it happens so quick, now that i think about it i highly doubt it was the bedding, but instead some sort of underlying disease that went unnoticed, but thank you for your response 💕

Yes..that was my first question too but i didnt want to ask. If you dont feel ready to take another hamster it is very good of you to dont take one. But i am very happy that there still will be a cagetour. It surprises me that Kashi has passed away so long ago. I remember her second birthday and she passed away two months after it. I was thinking a lot about her..how she was doing..but than i thought..she must doing fine otherwise there would be a video that she passes away. It feels a little bit..i dont know.. strange.. that she wasnt here anymore all the time but i understand that you had to give yourself time to give it a place. I know that can take months. Ofcourse i hope you will have another one in the future when the time is right. Thanks for explaining.💟💟💟

I want a hamster but I don't want my heart to break whenever they die...
@RicoLen15 жыл бұрын
This is a bit long, so, sorry about that, but I hope you'll bare with me. I have a 1200 square inch cage I've been using for my hamsters for a number of years now, and I'm curious if you have noticed the same things I have. First, if I attach a habitrail OVO den (the little green ball rooms) to a series of tubes, that is in all likelihood where they're going to make their bed. Second, absent an OVO den, they're going to look for the darkest corner of the cage they can find. Third, I've come to the conclusion that we as hamster owners have the whole food bowl thing backwards. We should be putting bowls for food in the cage empty, near the most likely places for the hamster to make their nests, and then scatter the food throughout the cage, so that the hamster can do what hamsters do; forage for food, and then stockpile their pantry with whatever they gather. I know there's a concern about 'wet' foods like fresh fruit and vegetables, but since we're also not supposed to be OVER-feeding our hamsters too, I've yet to see this as a real issue as I only give them what they can handle in a single day, or two a most. Fourth, I myself just like almost every youtuber, have this tendency (until the last couple of months I've finally decided to stop doing this) to build these large cages, with all these places for them to make their beds, but what they're instinctually looking for is some place safe 'underground' and semi-far away from where they come out to forage. Now technically it doesn't need to be underground, but rather they want to get out of the open and pass through a fairly sizable series of tunnels before finally building a nest. ~~~~~~~ After making these observations, I've changed the way I go about building my cage setups now, and my hamster has responded extremely well to it. Now what I do is I build my cages still quite similarly to how you and many others on youtube have done, but I have now cut a couple of holes in the bottom of my large cage (it's an ikea Billy bookcase with a custom lid) and attached habitrail ovo locks and tubes, and underneath the cage, which I have on a stand, I build a maze of tubes with ovo tubes, ovo waterbottles, dens and usually a larger 'transport unit' (which I stuff full of warm bedding). Then on the topside of the cage, I usually use all the little cubbies and hidey-holes to 'hide' her food. I portion out her meals each day, and then spread it out in all the places I used to think she would use to make her nest, and I do it during the day while she's sleeping. Then when she wakes up, she comes out and investigates every little bit of the cage, stuffs her pouches full of food, and then empties it out in the pantry of her choice next to her bed of choice, which she made herself using the bedding I supplied to her in the transport unit. Afterwards, she then comes out and starts running on her saucer/wheel. On the lower half of the stand the main cage sits on, I've also added panel walls I can easily take away when cleaning and accessing the underside of the cage, but during the day, when the hamster is sleeping they provide total darkness to her tubes and bed area. I've even tested to see whether or not she would make her nest elsewhere by going out of my way while designing the layout of the above ground portion of the cage to make the nicest areas I could imagine for her to sleep in. In addition I have added some tubes up and out of the cage area to elsewhere in the room to some more old-school hamster cages and bed setups, and even put one inside a cabinet where it's dark, and while she'll explore these areas, she doesn't use them much at all. After about 6-7 weeks now of trying this out, she has only ever made her bed under the big cage where dark. Ultimately these hamsters are very, VERY close cousins to the North American gopher, and if you watch a gopher, or if you happen to live in a place where hamsters live natively in the wild, then this most closely mimics their natural habitat; foraging for their food, and building their own nest & pantry underground in a series of tunnels. Anyways, sorry I know that's a long post, but I'm interested in hearing what you have noticed about your hamsters behaviors when choosing a nest and pantry. I have always thought your cage setups are the nicest I have ever seen, particularly your rainforest themed cage, but I'm now very seriously considering embracing the idea that no cage setup is complete unless they have added a series of tunnels and chambers underneath (or buried at the bottom of them) for the hamster to make a home in. What are your thoughts on this, and what have your observations been regarding where your hamsters go to make their homes? What do you see as their favorite places to nest?

You know, I'm kind of in the same place as you right now. I've now owned 4 hamsters in the last 6 or so years, the latest having just passed in August at just about a year old (the shortest lifespan I've had yet), and am a bit hamstered out. I needed time to regroup, decide if I even wanted another hamster (it would be so easy too just because I have the supplies and funds, because I can, but that's not a fair reason for the hamster), and to survey my options, see if there are any other pets that spark my interest that could use most of what I already have. So far I'm leaning toward another syrian and keeping my eyes peeled on Petfinder, Craigslist and the like, but am in no great hurry. I'm perfectly content to wait until some little fluff comes along who really needs me :)

I have a short haired hamster who is around 13-16 weeks old I'm not really sure because we adopted him. But he has a cage and I really want a bigger enclosure for him as his cage is under the bare minimum. I have been asking family members for money so I could buy the ikea detolf with my mum as i am 12 and I live in the UK. I have got £50 and my mum will pay the other £10 for the detolf but the I'm also not sure if his 11 inch trixie wheel will fit in the detolf while having a deep base of bedding. Do you have any tips or product in the UK that you can recommend for when I get the detolf ? Xx

So My 11 year old and I have been watching videos about hampsters all night. He is in love with your hampster room, and has big plans for the hamster that he is getting for Christmas. I was curious if you could give us some advice on what would be a good starter home for a hampster?
@HoppingHammy5 жыл бұрын
Hello to you and your son! :) I am not sure what you have available for space or a budget, but hamsters surprisingly need quite a bit of space, especially if you're considering a Syrian hamster. There are a lot of us who started off small and had to spend a lot of money to continuously upgrade through the years, so if I could give you some advice, it's to skip the smaller cages and go straight to something spacious and suitable. If you are able to get something like a 75 gallon aquarium, that would honestly be fantastic and highly recommended. A 40 breeder and 55 gallon aquarium size are sort of a starting point for space, but personally I feel like they are both too small for a Syrian and you will likely have to upgrade again. I hope this helps you with your decision! Most cages sold for small animals and hamsters are not suitable or large enough. A lot of hamster owners prefer to use tanks.

I had hamsters live for 7 years and a minimum of 5 years. This was 20+ years ago. What the heck has happened??? Maybe try looking around and buy a hamster with a longer lifespan. The ones I had were brown and whites normies. Seems the exotics have shorter lives. Good luck my dear- you're a great care taker of animals.
@Aspen_Husky4 жыл бұрын
The oldest hamster on record was 4 and a half. www.guinnessworldrecords.com/world-records/oldest-hamster-ever/ so if your hamsters have lived for 7 years... well you should be a record holder.
@Aspen_Husky4 жыл бұрын
And to answer your question on what the heck had happend- domestication and inter breeding. Hamsters 30 year ago where not bred the same as they are now so had longer life spans compared to our hamsters. Sadly it is impossible to find a breeding line of hamsters that are almost guaranteed to live 4 years, however hamsters from a good breeder can live on adverage a few more months than a pet store hamster. To go back to the way hamsters where when they had a longer lifespan would mean catching new wild hamsters and restarting the whole breeding and domestication from scratch.

@@HoppingHammy Hii! Im glad ur weekend was wonderful! That sounds amazing!😯 Mine was okay, ive been feeling so much better. I stopped doing the keto diet, according to several people who know a lot about this diet, told me i did everything correct. But due to stress, my body apparently needed sugars to handle the stress, but i never had any sugars in my system and so my body wasnt able to burn any fat, and it made me tired and exhausted mentally. As soon as i got out of ketosis, i fels so much better again! So maybe i can do this diet again in the future when im not having any stress anymore, but for now, its best for me to just eat healthy, including eating sugar and carbs. What a story again hahaha. But yeah ive been better since a few weeks!

Alanna Hernandez. Hey there! I’m a hamster owner myself, and I got mine at PetSmart! Depending if you live in the us, Petco! I hope this helps bye!
@sarah-tf6os4 жыл бұрын
Alanna Hernandez I would recommend an ethical breeder or rescuing a hamster from a shelter or something like that. Never buy a hamster from a pet store because usually the hamsters come from breeding mills. If you buy a hamster, not only are you supporting the breeding mill, but you’re making them breed more to replace the one you bought. 😊
