The middle range are used in magnum handgun cartridges and smaller caliber rifle cartridges. Slower burning are used in rifle cartridges, slower still in magnum rifle cartridges and slowest burning powders are used in the largest capacity cases such as artillery. Smokeless powders require pressure to work. Black powder on the other hand does not.
