Could you do a video explaining the tools and equipment you use? I would like to learn to make my own solid body electric guitar one day. I'm just trying to learn where to start. I checked and my local library didn't have any books on the topic.

I like that trick for sanding the neck angle in using a shim and the thickness sander. I'm totally stealing that idea, hope you don't mind!

That’s was my thought too. I love seeing all of the different tricks that Luthiers do to get that angle.

Great job, what is the scale on his guitar? What is the neck angle? Finally when sanding in the angle of the body around the neck pocket where does it start,does it start right at the beginning of the neck pocket or back of the neck pickup cavity towards the front of the body?
@ADFinlayson4 ай бұрын
The scale is 24.625" Neck and aroudn 3.5º. The angle in the top starts just behind the neck pickup cavity so the pickup and the neck sit on the same plane
@mauricelavergne34344 ай бұрын
Hello, so I assume that the bridge pickup is not on an angled plane and is on a flat part of the body as is the bridge? Also am I right in thinking that the angle on the body is the same as the neck angle? So am I right in thinking that the neck pickup ring is not wedge shaped and the bridge pickup ring is wedge shaped? Great idea to make the angle on the body by using your drum sander, I have a pin router so that is how I will do that part. Sorry for all the questions but I am only on my 12th build and this is the first LP style, mine is more of a PRS MaCarty than Les Paul. Thanks for all your help and I do believe you to be one of the best you tube builders out there, keep up the great work. The videos where you explain your process are very good, this way I don’t need to bother you with so many questions. Haha. Cheers Maurice

The angle is put into the body so when the template is stuck to the body, the floor of the neck pocket has the same angle. The bridge pickup region is not angled, I use an angled pickup ring there.

Pretty clever, hadn’t thought of that, thanks again

Great carving video!😂 Wouldn't it be easier to rout the neck pocket and pickup cavity whilst it was still flat on the top or am I missing something. I am attempting something similar and you are my video guru!
@ADFinlayson5 ай бұрын
Hi Dave, I route the neck pocket after carving the top because I want the floor of the pocket to be parallel with the top. I route the pickup cavities after the pocket because I need to be sure where the neck is going first. There are other was to do it of course, but this way works for me
@davethain8855 ай бұрын
@@ADFinlayson makes sense now.... so I presume for a guitar with a neck angle you would plane that into the neck pocket area before attaching the template and routing the pocket?
@ADFinlayson5 ай бұрын
@@davethain885 correct, there are a few ways to do it. My method is to shim the front of the body and run it under the drum sander.

Would a Surform plane not be better than a gouge chisel for rough shaping the edges?

When you put a plane down you should lay it on it's side, not with the blade facing down. It dulls the blade otherwise.

If you are going to express an opinion, can you be more specific on what is so ridiculously stupid? I thought this build process can only be completed mostly by hand, since it's not a mass production factory will million dollar tools.
