Yay Ultima. A series which in this day and age does not get enough recognition. Ironic but I was recently slogging through Fallout 2 and found myself wishing for the combat system of Ultima IV, a game which came out some 10 years earlier.

I love this game, I was just able to meet with lord British at the con this year and always a great guy

Gender has some peculiar effects on gameplay, especially when combined with one of the races and professions. For example, a Female Thief is less likely to be caught stealing from shops.

Some of the pre-Ultima/Wizardry CRPGs required you to bring your gold or EXP back out of the dungeon to gain levels, which was how you increased you HP. I'm guessing Ultima's system is a mutation of that. Telengard, being a port/remake, of one of those games still had that system of leveling-up. And so, in a way, did the early Wizardry games which required you to sleep in the town (the only safe location of those games) to level-up.

Not sure if this is true or not but collecting this game could be made even more difficult by the fact originally this game was ONLY distributed by Lord British HIMSELF on floppy disks with Xerox sheets in plastic sleeves. And as far as I know, Ultima 1 itself has NEVER been re-released on its own, ONLY as part of Ultima games collections, making it near impossible to collect this game on its own as far as I know.

+Alexandria “Alyxx” Thorne It was actually published by California Pacific originally and allegedly sold 30,000-100,000 copies depending on who you believe. Sierra also published a re-release of Ultima 1 for a short while when Garriott was signed up with them for Ultima 2 prior to forming Origin. The 86/87 version Kris is playing here was a port of a further re-release. The original Apple II version was written mostly in BASIC and horribly slow so Origin redid it in assembly and that was the version that got ported to DOS and numerous other platforms. This remake version came in it's own box with the usual Ultima manuals and trinkets and is stupidly expensive these days but not really all that rare. There was another re-release in the mid 90's on IIGS also which may well be the rarest version given how obsolete the IIGS and Ultima 1 already were by then. I think that version was just a disk and manual with no real packaging though.

+9Pix9 Thanks for clearing that up. Like I wrote, I wasn't sure.

+Alexandria “Alyxx” Thorne I personally bought my copy (ziploc and all) from the Computerland in Van Nuys, It was most definitely available retail. You're probably thinking of it's predecessor "Akalabeth", which Garriott originally distributedrbuted himself, but was also eventually retailed. Akalabeth shared Ultima's exact same BASIC dungeon code, but was extremely simplified in every other respect.

Whoa, good to see an Ultima game in here. Would love to see some of the other ones. ^^ Hey, have you ever played the Might and Magic games (the first person RPGs, not the strategy ones)?

One memory I have was of trying the Apple IIe version and being surprised that it plays rather differently in a lot of ways. Most notably it seemed to have random encounters (though still taking place on the overworld) rather than the more action-RPG system you see here. I can't recall if that was only for the overworld or if it was true for the dungeons as well. ..... So about the "physical version for the sake of collecting" thing, I recall reading that the DOS port was actually never released stand-alone, but could only be found in compilations. I'm not sure if that's true or not. In any case the Ultima Collection is how I got my copy.

OK, so that gets into a bit of confusing territory. Notice how the game is called "Ultima I", not just simply "Ultima"? If you want to get pedantic, "Ultima I" is a REMAKE. The original "Ultima" was ONLY for the Apple II and Atari 8-bit computers, thus any releases of "Ultima" on DOS would have only been in compilations while "Ultima I" very much had a boxed release for DOS and everything. :B

A "Bobbit" is a creature that has had his, ahem, "manhood" removed. Although I've heard if you find it soon enough, you can get it reattached.

Great video! I hope you get around to doing Ultima VII, that is such an amazing RPG. Ultima Underworld was great also.

I'm in your shoes in this one. I never played any ultima games except ultima 6 like 20 years ago so I barely remember it. I played ultima 1 and I was surprised to find it to be very simple, easy to play and it was fun lol. Oh ya, I did some search on google for some keyboard reference cause none of that is available on gog. But you can find it on its forums though.

In terms of the origin (lol) of "Lord British", I was always led to believe it was a college nickname. Somebody was going around giving nicknames to freshmen and they thought he looked British.
@Pixelmusement9 жыл бұрын
+LetsNeverPlayAgain It's possible... I thought for sure he used the word "kids" when describing how he got the nickname, which could theoretically still apply to college students. I'd have to look into it again. :B

Funny enough it’s a little of both. As I recall from watching a couple interviews recently, it was when he was younger, but it was at summer program run at a university. And yes, some of the kids thought he had a British accent. Could be cause he was in the south (Texas) but grew up around the space program (his dad was an astronaut) so he had lots of interactions with friends and neighbors who didn’t have local accents.
