I remember a game called Forsaken, which was an impressive Descent clone with beautiful graphics, providing you had a 3D accelerator. I remember getting it soon after installing the 3dfx Voodoo 2 in my PC and was absolutely in awe with the smooth framerates and the astonishing graphics. The game was so fast that I felt genuine motion sickness for the first time in my life due to the speed and the disorientation feeling the 6DOF these games ensue. Never owned Descent 3 but played it a bit at my friend's house. By that time I was more accustomed to the smooth framerate and 6DOF, and so did not experience motion sickness as before (I also believe the FOV was a bit higher).

Hooray! I bought Descent 3 in a bookstore when I was 15 years old. It was the full box release, buried in a pile of crappy games for 5 bucks. Didn't know what it was at the time, but the cover looked great with a big spaceship on it, so I had to get it. I still play it nowadays from time to time with a Sidewinder. Super fun game.

Descent 3 is one of the "transition period" games (a name I coined myself) - games made during the early years of 3D accelerators, which are hard to get running properly on a modern machine with modern hardware and OS. The transition period lies roughly between 1997 and 1999, though there are exceptions, and some 2000 games could also count. Like I mentioned under another video - it took me a long time to get to this game. I played Descent 1 in the mid-90's, Descent 2 in the mid-2000's and Descent 3 - in the mid 2010's (using the nGlide wrapper). It was worth the wait overall, I enjoyed theg ame and finally got closure.

The Microwave cannon has an actual use: It does strong damage to swatters (the stationary cannons). It seems to do extra damage to robots that already have the status effect, which is likely on immobile targets. Also the fusion is more useful than in D2. It is still weaker than in D1, but doesn't shake you that hard, so it's more like a shotgun.
@dwindeyer4 жыл бұрын
The GOG edition now ships with nGlide and works fine on modern systems, although you still have to use some command line options to get widescreen. The game changer for me was discovering IndirectSound which emulates DirectSound3D hardware on Windows 8 and 10. Playing Descent 3 with 5.1 sound is aaaaaaawesome. I tried to get EAX working using ALchemy universal but it results in no sound. So it's one step short of the "ultimate" experience.

Descent 3 runs very well with the Glide wrapper called nGlide (Glide was always the best API for this game; it enables some nice effects like specular highlights which aren't available on D3D or OpenGL). You can get it to look pretty good on a widescreen monitor by forcing it to use a widescreen resolution, then fixing the world rendering with the command line switch -aspect 1.778 for a 16:9 display, or -aspect 2.333 for a 21:9 display. UI, Text, and HUD graphics are still stretched and somewhat pixelated, but the game world is aspect-correct, and that's what matters most. There's also a project called IndirectSound which lets you have 3D sound if you want.

Totally Legit Gaming [TLEG] The Descent trilogy as a whole is thoroughly excellent. Even the new Descent Underground is solid, but is somewhat lacking in what made the originals great. I never understood why the Freespace spin-off series started out with including the Descent title, which isn't really a spin-off at all since it doesn't seem to have any connection with the Descent universe. I never played the first Freespace, but the second is one of the best space-sims of all time.
@Pixelmusement7 жыл бұрын
+Eli Malinsky They put "Descent" in the Freespace title so people would understand who was making it and that it had ties to Descent lore. As for Descent Underground, remember that it's still not anywhere near finished so you probably shouldn't talk about it with a sense of finality just yet. ;)

For all of you who yearn for some Descent action: please check out "Overload" on steam, there's even a free demo. It's made by the Descent guys and is in every way a true successor - but it's being overlooked right now and hasn't got any attention (the fact that Descent: Underground is also being made and isn't really good is a part of it). Right now it's looking like we get a repeat of what happened with Freespace 2, where these guys made one of the best games in its genre yet nobody bought it (until years later that is). So by all means if Descent is your thing check out the Overload demo on steam.

Good news. There's a patcher called InjectD3 (because it uses dll injection) in development that will make playing this game on modern hardware much easier. It's still in early development and so far only works on OpenGL (adds windowed and borderless widescreen, new mouse code, OpenAL support and the option to change the FOV), but it's promising.

Oh, using DXWnd alone isn't so bad for simply "playing" D3, I just had to go through a lot more hoops because I was trying to capture footage on the same compy while playing it. Though DXWnd is a very advanced tool so having a simpler one specifically for this game couldn't hurt! :B
@SplotchTheCatThing3 жыл бұрын
It's kind of ironic that this game is so much harder to get running properly on modern systems than its DOS predecessors, but because the source code was never released there's very few ways for fans to update it. They've still tried, but there hasn't been very much success. Good thing for me I always liked Descent 2 better :) The Red Faction series (another bunch of games by Volition) was originally meant to be a continuation of the Descent series before Descent 4 was cancelled, but something I've noticed that was really interesting is that most of the games in that series borrow some kind of plot element from this game in particular. Things like a Mars-based rebellion that fights against a massive Earth-based corporation in the first game, and wins with help from the space military; or a mysterious Martian tribe that has unexpected powers in the third and fourth ones. If memory serves, the first Red Faction even used a number of level textures from Descent 3. I'm sure the second game borrowed some stuff from this well, I'm just blanking on what it could have been. It was... less memorable than the other three. Funnily enough, from what little mapping I tried to do for this game, I have a suspicion that the reason the Thiefbot's movement is easier to predict and deal with than it was in Descent 2 is mostly down to differences in how the AI pathing works in this engine. It probably wasn't intentional, or at least, no more intentional than "oh, this is how thief's acting now. let's keep it that way." One more thing to add to this overlong overlate comment... The new GOG version of the game seems to be set to run the launcher program (Descent3.exe) like an installer program, needing administrator permission to run. This appears to prevent DxWnd from hooking into the game-- I still have my old discs so I was able to test and confirm that this is the case. I don't know if there's a way to remove the need for administrator permission, but anyone running the GOG release of the game is going to need to find out if they want to get any actual utility out of this utility. :)
@Pixelmusement3 жыл бұрын
Oh, the issue you're having with the GOG version there is explained in DXWnd's documentation: DXWnd has trouble hooking into programs which are trying to run in Compatibility Mode. You need to find the executable and disable all of its compatibility settings in its properties, and if by chance that's not enough, there's a more advanced and complicated way to clear compatibility settings which I don't recall how to do at the moment. Also, even though DXWnd generally triggers a request for administrator access, if it doesn't, you'll want to manually give it said access when booting it up.

The biggest flaw with Descent 3 is, that level-scripts are compiled into DLL files (read: machine code). While this allows extreme advanced modding it causes some problems : 1) The Levels cannot be reverse-engineered, and potential modders have no idea what to do, so a modding scene never evolved. It also doesn't help it wasn't shipped with a C-compiler (and few people had internet back then), and the manual nowere explaines how to change outdoor textures (hint: hold shift and click in the worldview, to set them to the current texture) 2) There is no easy way to port it to other platforms. Other x86 systems than Windows (like Linux) need a custom DLL loader that only works if you don't make any system calls, and other pletforms like consoles can't run them at all. You have to compile the script from source, and that is impossible if the source code is lost (likely with fan-made levels) 3) There is a security problem, as you could theoretically place malware in level DLLs. If Descent 3 would have been more popular, this would have been a sewer problem.

Underground is made by the star citizen guys, and is a crowdfunding and microtrans scam just like star citizen. It also may never be finished, which is why I advocate for crowdfunders owning the full rights of a game until completed, much like how the bank owns your car until you pay off the loan. Also, the best visuals can only be achieved in d3d with bumpmapping enabled, and specifically a pentium3 cpu, because certain effects require the cpuid of a p3 (sparkles).
@Pixelmusement6 жыл бұрын
+John Doe Yeah, there's a bunch of P3-exclusive effects in the game, which is curious given its hardware accelerated nature. As for Underground, I know there's raging debates about it and I chose to just inform of its existence rather than comment on the state of the project. I would absolutely recommend Overload over Underground for anyone looking to buy into a modern 6DoF project in the works!
@JohnDoe-ip3oq6 жыл бұрын
Cool, really appreciate the reply. The p3 exclusive effects are weird and only useful on high end p3s, and make me wonder why no-one has yet hacked the exe to enable it on modern hardware. On another note, I have a bunch of old hardware like a vortex 2 sq2500, obsidian x-24, p3 tualatin with rambus, etc.. and would like to make youtube videos and/or remote game stream over the internet. Would you or anyone out there know how to make this possible with a 9x OS? Does Linux have applications that can remote access / record a 9x machine? I would like to get footage out to the public, but 9x hardware and the OS is useless for streaming.
@Pixelmusement6 жыл бұрын
+John Doe Basically, you need to treat your Win 9x system the same as any other gaming console in your streaming setup. So you would need a modern system to handle the actual streaming while accepting the video signal from your 9x system through a capture device of some sort. I don't have external capture devices so I can't comment on how to set them up or which to recommend, but that's how you'd do it. :B

I never played Descent 3 but theres something about the graphic style. Its kind'a cartoony is some way. I don't know if I'll like it but I should play first in order to form a better opinion. All I can say its very very different from the first one. Oddly enough I really love the style of the the cutscenes...so old style and I like it hehe.
@elimalinsky70697 жыл бұрын
Late Game Reviewer Most late 90s hardware accelerated 3D games looked cartoony. That is because of the low-res textures and low poly counts. Usually a single low-res texture had to be stretched over a large game model or part of level geometry, making it lack in detail and look like a cartoon drawing. The low polygon count added to that visual perception as game models are less realistic or proportional. That is why even modern games that seek to provide a cartoony artstyle choose to go with low-res textures and low-poly counts.

I've only tested multiplayer on Windows 7, but it does work there. The Parallax Online service no longer works, so instead people use d3.descent.cx directly or through a 3rd-party lobby (Vortex being one example). At this point there's basically only one server with any activity, and it's mostly filled custom-made CPU controlled players, which are set up to leave when a real human joins.

I'd been playing Descent 1 & 2 on and off for the past couple years via the D2X source port. I then moved on to Descent 3 a few months ago and I agree that it's a mess! Took tons of tweaking to get the video and controls at all usable. It still plays considerably worse than the first two games do even in their original DOS engines. I think I got D3 and its expansion as a pack-in with a sound card, but I managed to snag it on GOG before it got pulled, so that was the version I was trying to use so that I wouldn't have to look for patches. It looks like my approach was to use nGlide, but I might have to try the DXWnd and/or dgVoodoo2 methods. Your tips are greatly appreciated. In fact, I would actually really appreciate those DXWnd videos you theorized about, because I tried to use it once and was completely lost.
@Pixelmusement7 жыл бұрын
+HunterZBNS Most of the defaults in DXWnd should work under most circumstances. Some of what it can do is actually only there for sake of experimentation and have no practical purpose. (For instance, disabling D3D texturing.) As for nGlide, I did indeed test that and found the framerate did hit 60, but skipped a beat every couple seconds, so it was unusable really. :/
@HunterZBNS7 жыл бұрын
Noticed some things: - The game may not support specular reflections (shiny surfaces) in OpenGL mode - The game has a -vsync command line option, but you can't vsync windowed apps in Windows 10 anyway because of the forced hardware compositing - The readme specifically mentions 16:9 support via the -aspect parameter - The readme mentions a -z32bit parameter that may be helpful if you experience z-fighting - Is there a way to prevent the menus from going full-screen via DxWnd? - Is there some way to force trilinear filtering in OpenGL mode? The game seems to use mipmaps and *maybe* bilinear filtering, which is highly noticeable with some wall textures
@HunterZBNS7 жыл бұрын
Also noticed that the game won't stick at 1280x960 with dgVoodoo2. All other resolutions seem to work. What the heck? DxWnd related maybe?
@Pixelmusement7 жыл бұрын
+HunterZBNS To respond to everything:- OpenGL mode doesn't support a lot of things, but they're all very minor at least.- Windows 10 vsyncs fine Windowed if you have your graphics drivers set up accordingly. If you apply the vsync command line as well you may get TWO vsyncs per frame, so don't do it!- You CAN alter the aspect ratio, yes, but it's "Vertical -" style FOV altering, so everything looks way too close.- z32 isn't really necessary, z-fighting is rare in this game.- The steps I outlined SHOULD prevent fullscreen being tripped. You may've forgot to set up the Glide or OpenGL hooks among other settings I pointed out.- I don't believe you can force the texturing filtering for OpenGL.- 1280x960 doesn't work in Glide mode. This is a bug with D3, not with any of the tools used. I was recording a 1600x1200 rendering squished down to 1280x960. This resolution DOES work with OpenGL.

+Badness The Island Car Mech3 is notoriously difficult to get working properly. Last time I tried was on a Windows XP system and while it "worked", it crashed easily and despite running 60 FPS the gameplay itself was going at half speed for some reason. >_>;

Having played all Descent games. All I can say is that I prefer Descent 2's AI. For some odd reasons it feels more like a tryhard brutal attempt to rip you apart. Wich IMO is closer to what I'd expect from malfunctionning robots. Not saying AI in D3 is bad. It isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination especially considering the age of the game. I just prefered their behavior in D2.
@Pixelmusement7 жыл бұрын
+40End I can understand this sentiment, given that the AI in D3 is more likely to string you along or not just sit there and let you pummel it with shots. I still prefer D3's AI to D2 though. ;)
@thermallance79477 жыл бұрын
I especially prefer the way they dodge things. The movements. In D3 they are quite more intelligent. A bit too much if you ask me indeed. :P Had my ass beaten up quite a bit on D3. But I still feel D2 had a better, not smarter, AI for the intended purpose. In D3 I sometime feel like im fighting a deathmatch bot if you get what I mean. But as a game I prefer D3. Levels are more interesting to navigate.

I enjoyed this game... but it did not have the same magic as the original two, IMO.

Definitely subjective. I myself prefer D3 over D2 but there's plenty of reasons why someone would prefer D2 over D3. (Or heck, even potentially preferring D1 to the rest!)
@brianbergmusic52883 жыл бұрын
@@Pixelmusement I agree that it is subjective. For me, I simply enjoyed D2 immensely when I started crafting my own levels in DMB2 and consuming new material from the mod community. Also, because of the whacko game logic, I felt that the 'fun factor' had less suspension of belief the more photorealistic the series got. Whacko game logic includes: 1. Lasers are not beams of light at all, but florescent bulbs that travel about as fast as an fuming Volkswagen and make for fun 'pew-pew' dodgeball. 2. Bullets are faster than light (see #1). 3. Your ship can carry the entire payload of an entire aircraft carrier in spite of being the size of a Volkswagen. Double-or-nothing in D2 and beyond if you collect a handy dandy little box. 4. You engage in dogfights within a cyberpunk city in D3, and there are specifically useful military grade powerups right around the streetlights in neat and tidy formation. Also, only automated cops show up for the city lockdown instead of the military. 5. Mutant Martians with puzzle temples... where have I seen that before? GIVE THE PEEPOL EAIRRR!!

hmm, MDK is not a sequel, only other games that I can think of are all 3D like RTS.

with last DXWnd v2.06.03 this don't work. DXWnd have changed a lot and don't apply well on Descent 3 v1.4 or Descent 3 v1.5 | However, with InjectD3 from InsanityBringer GITHub, Descent 3 work a lot better. This not completly done yet, but is better than DXWnd solution for this time, 2024.
@Pixelmusement7 ай бұрын
Descent 3 is notably tricky to get working optimally; the latest DXWnd probably does work fine but just has a new setting which needs adjusting which has defaulted in a way D3 doesn't like, though if someone is developing a better/simpler solution specifically for D3 then that's certainly good to hear! :B

I gave up on this game half way through. I preferred no story, isolated in far off space as the form of game. And yeah, the robots - totally annoying. Descent 2 is by far my favorite of the series. The open environments of D3 were at times interesting, but they didn't serve the game well. It's just more interesting to be in mild-sized corridors and rooms in a mine while fighting robots. The visuals and the action complement each other well there.

What they want ? What they want is a fully 3D Doom. Not a poorly imitated Half Life. The Fusion Engine is superior to the Source Engine (despite being five years older), and even better than Unreal, but the linear levels and idiotic puzzles makes this game bad. This is the death of a franchise, that could have been avoided. Couldn't you just have a game based on exploration and combat like Descent 1, running on the Fusion Engine ?. Half Life (running on the dated Quake Engine) has puzzles running on Action Film logic - Descent 3 has puzzles, that transphere data, by carrying floppies and operating weird user interfaces with a space ship. All the other times ? Shoot its weak point ! You have a Lightning tower, that shoots lightnings (with the use f smaller towers) at you. Should you abuse it atack cycle ? No - shoot its weak point. For a Game, that tries to be "Next Gen" (in the negative sence) by any means, it relies too much on "Strength by numbers" (Frag Swatters) and "Attack the weak point". The only good future, I could imagine for Descent 3, is releasing the source code. Id really would to like to read it. It has any graphical gimmick imaginable in 1999, and reading source code is always fun. I Like how Descent 1's source rants about homing missiles beeing unable to lead targets, or Nethack's comment about nudity in Nunnerires, in the divine lightning logic, or Quake 3's algorithm to compute squareroots (commented "What The F*ck").

Having owned this game since it was brand new I can safely say the VAST majority of Descent fans loved this thing. It garnered huge review scores and easily provided over 20 hours of single-player gameplay with maps which did indeed have PLENTY of exploration and combat, mixed in with some puzzles and the occasional physics element, and the multiplayer delivered too. Plus, all the tools needed to make custom content were included right there in the box as it was the same tools used by the devs. Ironically, the first two levels are probably the most linear of the entire game so it can be easy to get the wrong impression from those, but then every level following really opens up and some of them are MASSIVE. :B
@Ribulose15diphosphat3 жыл бұрын
@@Pixelmusement I DIsagree in two points. *Only Levels 11, 13, 14, 15 are nonlineral (while 13 and 14 are aweful for different rasons). It is often the unnesecary restriction of the order of tasks in combination with the Guide Bot, that makes the levels linear. - To make them better: 1) Show everything plot relevant on the Map (like the switchboxes in Descent 2) 2) Let the Guide-Bot only find plot relevant thing, if you have explored them. *Modding is still another thing. The Documantation is bad (you need Internet to learn it(unlikely in 2000)). Level Scripts are deployed as DLLs (who cant be reverser enginerred(and for a modding heavy franchise this you want reverse engineering), aren't portable (bad for one of the few mainstream games supporting Linux), and are a sewer security hazard (Descent 3 Levels could contain Malware))

20 hours of game play is nothing try Witcher 3. Speed run apparently clocked in at 25 hours but ideally can take 100 hours or even 200. 😉

+Tim King True, but over 20 hours is a lot for a first person shooter. ;)
@elimalinsky70697 жыл бұрын
Tim King The Witcher 3 is an RPG, a genre known for ridiculous amounts of gameplay hours. Shooters are usually much less than 20 hours in length, these days more profoundly than in the 90s. Some shooters were indeed lengthy, Unreal and Half-Life come to mind, clocking in at an average of around 25 hours each. A first person game which was really long is Thief and especially Thief II. The latter took me about 50 hours to finish. Although these games are extremely slow paced. Hexen also took me dozens of hours to finish, but that was because I got lost so often due to the notoriously maze-like levels (even more so than Wolfenstein 3D!). If we are talking about RPGs, then Baldur's Gate II is probably the lenghtiest game I have ever played that has an endgame. It took me about 130 hours to beat without even completing all the sidequests and seeing all the available content that game had to offer.
