I always hold my art practice hostage. I work 4x10’s so my weekends are getting all the chores & errands done. I don’t allow myself to play with art supplies until the work is done. Then I feel all this anxiety because I know I will be disappointed if I don’t get to play. Today I’m playing & listening to your video. My anxiety level went from about a 7 to a 4 and it’s going down. (I haven’t finished my chores yet.) Thanks for the art therapy video❣️It was what I needed today.

Should have watched this one before your 100 day #68-72! This is definitely me - I don't have time to start now because...there is always something. I think that is why I have continued with the 100 day challenge because I have given myself permission to do it very quickly. It's not beautiful art but I'm learning what I like all the time. Thank you.

I completely identify. You have really enthused me about grid journaling and i too have ADHD. It is almost a psychological fake out...they're *just* two inches each, you start on one, and suddenly you're in flow state and it's two hours later. Bravo!

Thank you so much for being vulnerable and talking about ADHD time blindness. I struggle with this so much! I have plenty of time to make art but I just don't do it for one excuse or another. Probably my biggest excuse it that if I create too late at night then my brain won't shut off so I can sleep. But really how close to bedtime can I create and still sleep? I need to test that theory and then I can eliminate that excuse. I will try this week to take a few minutes after dinner to create something... anything.... JUST DO IT! lol

I use the 30 minutes I have for lunch. I am perfectly capable of eating during my 15 minute break. So why not mentally escape from work by doing a little art. I have two or three pieces going and I just do a little bit each day. Whenever I finish something, I bring a few more to work. It really makes my say so much better.

Inspiring as always Jackie -- love watching you make multiple small universes ❤Thank you also for the idea to leave things out and do a little bit and leave it -- I, too, feel like I need a long, uninterrupted period to be able to 'get into' the art-making and I need to be reminded that is not the case -- I'm interested to see what happens when I deliberately do it in parts -- even for those of us who make art on a regular basis you are a *great* *art* *coach* 💚💙💜

As someone blessed with ADHD, I really appreciate your transparency, Jackie. The treadmill of life (aka hamster wheel) is a favorite form of exercise for me, I’m afraid. I have come to treasure the small spaces of time I determined to set aside in the early mornings before my very physical work day begins. It’s been a lifesaver! I will surely add this grid journaling to my practice. Great idea, great advice. Thank you!

I can totally relate. To help make art accessible I try to always have something out on one of my desks. If I finish a project I tidy up but put down a piece of paper or an art journal. Having something, anything out helps. I also have a variety of projects on the go, so I can do a couple of minutes or a lot longer. And they will often be different types of project, so if I don't fancy big messy paint work, I have small cutting out paper instead. I also find that Having the small projects on the go running alongside my bigger longer projects helps give my addy head a happy. Little and often wins. Little and often dopamine hits. And fun little bits of art. Wins all round. 😁

What you describe as ‘not being able to do anything because of an upcoming commitment’, I’ve always described as ‘not being open ended’. It boils down to the same thing. - If I’m doing artwork and am suddenly asked if I can pick up one of my grandkids from school, my day immediately isn’t open ended any more, it’s closed in, which means I can’t relax enough to do artwork. I’m in immediate stress, can’t paint, and that’s the end of my day. I have to stop there annd then! Even if I don’t have to pick them up til 6 hours later, I still can’t relax enough to paint, because it’s not open ended any more. This has been absolutely huge for me, and is becoming ridiculous! I recently had to move out of a house that was very dangerous to live in, due to emotional abuse, so I couldn’t create there, and spent a year marking time. I packed up my precious belongings, including my art studio, put it all in storage when I moved out, as it all happened so fast, and 5 days later my shed and 130 others, burnt in a massive fire. Nothing was salvageable. So I’m starting again, little by little, so these little grid paintings are perfect for me, as it will take years to build up my supplies again. I’m also suspecting I have ADHD, and the more I learn about it, the more it seems familiar. I also rarely finish anything, but if I do, I’ve probably painted through the night, in order to do so. I’ve just retired, so no more all nighters, and having to work the next day. Also, out of sight, out of mind for me….. So if I tidy my desk and put my stuff in containers out of sight, I forget about it. This video has been perfect for me!

Wow! Thank you for sharing with me ❤️ First off, I’m so sorry to hear that you found yourself in an emotionally abusive home situation. Sending HUGE hugs ❤️ Kudos to you for being so brave to leave and knowing that you deserved better - I don’t imagine any of it was easy 🌈 Secondly, ooooomph. The fire. 😱 I don’t even know what to say. Good gravy. I love that grid journalling has been working for you. Such a good idea to start there - it take relatively little material to fill the grids and I always feel satisfied after creating multiple works - no matter how tiny 🤗 And third, I absolutely LOVE the “open ended” label. It’s perfect. *chef’s kiss* I’m so encouraged to know that you have art to bring a bit of sunshine to your days. You have gone through so much - you deserve to express yourself and I hope you feel proud of what you create ❤️❤️❤️

@@jackieschomburgart - Thanks Jackie. Art has saved me more than once, as the piano had always done. I love the non-preciousness of your art here. I tend to paint very seriously and precisely. Ultra realism comes naturally to me, which I’ve been fighting against, because when I was studying art in the 8Os, teacher’s general comments to the class were to paint/draw ‘loosely’… So I often felt I wasn’t ’doing it right’. These little paintings you’ve done are delightful. They’re about balance, and colour. And fun! I get too serious, and forget to play. My motto is ‘paint with Joy’ - Because I forget to, and need the reminder. These tiny paintings are a reminder. 💕
