ADHD School Accommodations! Don’t be shy, ask your teacher(s) for accommodations to help you have a successful school year!
Schools are legally required to give you accommodations if you have an IEP or 504 Plan. I didn't have either but I still got accommodations by asking teachers/my parents asking/fighting for them. I am extremely privileged to have had parents who went to battle with teachers, the school board, and administrators to get me accommodations. I would not have done well in school without them.
If you think you have ADHD, I made a worksheet to help determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria and talk to your doctor about it!

I feel you, I discovered mine at 30. But I think this girl is doing ADHD community a service by sharing her experiences and knowledge. Not many people with ADHD would want to do this honestly.

Same I went through highschool with undiagnosed ADHD and even worked very closely with sped class because the teachers knew something was up but could only relate it to extreme anxiety and would call me neurotic when I'd have sensory overload from my seating.

I didn’t know I had adhd until my junior year of high school and I did really poorly in school. Even after I was diagnosed, my parents really had no clue how to accommodate me. We eventually found a solution that kind of worked but I ended up barely graduating later than my peers and that was really difficult for me to deal with. I kept being told that I was lazy or I needed to try harder but no one understood that me trying looks completely different to a neurotypical person trying. My brain has to work 10x harder to focus and understand things that I have absolutely zero interest in.

And then theres some of us who were diagnosed with ADHD as adults and realize that school makes a whole lot more sense now that we know why school didn’t make sense when we were younger

I did this in my grade now (4th) and it worked amazingly. I didn’t do it before class but during it and I said I work better when standing so my teacher was able to raise my desk. As a minus though I was moved to the back so others could see. This so far is my best class in this school! 😊

As a teacher, thank you for posting this! I love accommodating my students so they can learn in a way that works for them. It's so much easier to do this when they are up front and tell me what has worked for them. We still try our best to find out what works, but it is our dream to have a student who is cooperative with and seeks our accommodations for them.

I struggled so much in school, even with accomodations. School just wasn't my thing, and it still isn't. But even though I came extremely close to failing highschool, I worked my ass off and ended up graduating with almost a 4.0. School is hard, but if you put effort into it and not give up, you'll get through it. Even if everyday feels like torture

I had a math teacher that didn't consistently write the assignment down on the board, and he was so confused why I kept struggling with the homework part of class. I wasn't diagnosed, but he cared, and we had a meeting with him, my mom, and I. My mom realized how disorganized he was and pointed out to him that it was simply that he wasn't communicating the assignments effectively enough. He started getting better about being clear with what our homework was.

Growing up in the eighties I found that if I did super well in the things I was good at, it balanced out in my average to 85 when I didn’t do assignments like book reports, i also am very good at test taking and guessing right. I’m almost 50 now have had a torturous adult life and undiagnosed, when younger and trying to find out what was wrong they gave me antidepressants for anxiety that didn’t help, but eventually got rid of the little bit of ocd i had that motivated me to do some things

My close friends did a lot to accommodate me even though we didn’t even have words for what was different about me. There’s no way I’d have finished high school if I was separated from them!!!! And besides, almost anyone I could’ve sat beside would’ve been a friend in no time. And I got even more distracted when I sat by myself because then I didn’t have anyone to help me by body doubling. Sitting at the back was usually best for me because I feel unsafe and get very distracted when I can’t easily see what’s going on around me. But my main issue at school was simply that I wasn’t being challenged anywhere near enough to stay engaged. I don’t say this to contradict you but just because what works for one person might not work for another, and it’s okay if it takes time to figure out which accommodations work for us!

I so relate but my school didn’t support my adhd they just threw me in in house or just didn’t bother with me and it was hard k-12 I actually work as a vet tech now and I got my hiset(GED) with really good scores that I’m shocked about but it was during the pandemic when everything was online and I was able to actually be in my own space much more focused and at peace. Even now my old teachers go “ ohh wow look at you, I’m so proud of you I never would of thought you were be here “ like bruh come on ya didn’t support me I supported myself and till this day I look at my old teachers with their dogs and cats and smile because while they were talking about me behind my back in school negatively and about my life struggles like they did in the past as a bunch of immature adults that have ego issues so big a mountain has nothing on them. I choose to smile and give all the love to their fur babies and their fur Babies loves me so much and that my friends is was gets them upsets but hey you love and learn hence why I work with animals not people because people have done nothing more than disappointment me and treat me badly

Mannnnn this comes at such a crucial time. I’m 39 decided to change my career path and go back to school to be an auto technician after working behind a desk for about a 20 years. Started out as a receptionist and worked my way up to corporate recruiting and I was BORED. Didn’t know I had ADHD until I was an adult and had already graduated high school with 65 average and 2 failed college attempts. I have a 3.85 GPA in school right now I’ve been sitting in the front of my class. 😂

Although I already completed undergraduate with a lot of struggles and did not discover my ADHD until 30, I’ve learned a lot about myself from this video, especially the part of visual learning. No wonder I enjoy online courses the most, but struggling so much with hands on job training that has no written instructions. Will continue to pursue higher education now that I understand what’s going on with me. Thank you!

You need an actual letter from the doctor now and has to be the doctor that diagnosed you or treating you well depending on the doctor themselves but they’re willing to do. It’s been a real struggle for me to get when I was in high school they didn’t require this my teachers just knew that I needed extra time, and that I clearly had ADHD

I'm French and I didn't know I had ADHD until college. But I still got straight As in school except and Always in maths. Then in High school we started doing essays and it was downhill from that. I still got to prep school but there were even more essays but I liked learning a bunch of New things. Same in college in English Studies but now that I have to do a MA Thesis and I barely started I see that I reached my limit. I dont know what I Can Do anymore.
