Hello, thank you so much for this.😊 My problem is entirely one of self regulation. And I have now put myself on a strict hourly regime which has worked wonders - now if I am floundering in the middle of the afternoon I just ask myself what am I meant to be doing at this time and I can do it. It also means that if I am feeling bad at a certain time I know the feeling will pass when I get to the next section of the day. I loved the reference to foraging for information, I think I was aware that somehow my internet browsing was akin to gathering food... I have also discovered why I have never enjoyed Christmas - it is just all too much!!! When I realised that ADHD explains what is going on in my head I went through a grieving process, denial, anger (that no one ever saw this when it is actually a common thing), there were so very many Aha moments - I am 62 years old. I have done all this work alone, attention regulation and emotional regulation. No-one believes there is anything wrong with me because I worked successfully for 30years. I now think how strong I was to manage do this. I am now actively looking to use positive sources of dopamine to enhance my life, eg exercise. I am trying to improve my relationships by viewing socialising as a good source of dopamine rather than as a draining, tiring activity (I am an introvert). Thank you for your very helpful KZbins. Regards F

I'm so glad you posted, I'm at my wits end trying to get some guidance from my doctor but am consistently told "you seem fine to me". Yes, don't I just..! Your comment gives me hope that these time slots and things can work, the way you describe the issues sound very familiar to me (but met with looks of disdain/raised eyebrows from professionals because i seem just fiiine). I'm tired of others deciding what needs doing when they don't even understand the issues. Now -- I'm going to go back and watch this from the start as i got distracted😄 Thank you again 🙏

I understand. It makes me angry that I have been seeking help for years and no-one suggested ADHD might be a possibility even tho it is quite common, and well known.
@AttentionTalkVideo3 жыл бұрын
@@charlisparkles There is a lot of ignorance out there. ADHD and intelligence is too separate issues however some professionals rule out an ADHD diagnosis if a person has good grades or in a job. It isn't easy to find a good professional but keep trying.

Wow! Mind blown! This has helped so much. This solidified what was bouncing around in my head. I always knew that the tips and tricks may or may not work for me. Knew there was something holding me back from the mindset shift that would truly help me, not keep me bogged down in indecision with just about everything. Thank you both for this.

@AttentionTalkVideo it is Funny you brought up Carol Dwecks mindset book. Upon reccomendation from my counselor, I have began reading it. (I am about half way through it). There are some good points in the book, however, I am having a tough time relating to it. I just don't Identify with it. I know I need to shift my way of thinking twords the growth mindset/ positive thinking, however I still desperately seeking someone to present it in a way that I can relate to. Speaking my language, if you will. That way the mindset shift is easier. For example, I struggle with setting goals and habits, but James Clear's book "Atomic Habits" spoke to me and has helped me a lot because he made setting goals realistic. He didn't oversell it, but broke it down into easy small steps. So my question is this...do you recommend any mindset/ positivity books that may be what I am looking for? I am seeking a book written from a perspective of someone who was negative and who is now more positive. Or basically a positivity book that is pragmatic and not far fetched. Hope that makes sense...

thanks for posting and for posing your question. Mindset is how your mind is set up to think. It is the way you look at the world. A new mindset is completely different because it changes the paradigm in which you view things. Here is a metaphor: If your mind was set up to think the world is flat you’ll never recognize it is round (even with the evidence that it is round) because you mind isn’t set up to see the clues that prove the earth is round. This video was intended to help share my thoughts on what a mindset is and what a mindset shift is. In my experience people want tips tricks and strategies because that is how their mind is set up to approach this. I’ve found understanding ADHD and shifting your mind to problem solve is far far far more effective. Now to your question… goals and habits. Your mind is set up for someone to tell you how to set goals and implement habits. A new mind set would be to look a your existing habits for what works and to use what works more intentionally. As for goals. Setting goals is a no brainer (i.e. run a marathon). Planning is really not that heard (run a set number of miles six days a week over three months). The trick is how do you get out the door to run every day. Most don’t execute cause their mind isn’t set up to think about that part.
@justanothervote3 жыл бұрын
@@AttentionTalkVideo I definately agree with you. The execution is the difficult part. I have found that I am prefer senarios that require a large amount of energy up front, but then they are done. The reason I struggle with goals and habits is because they require incremental effort instead. I struggle with the consistency part.
@AttentionTalkVideo3 жыл бұрын
@@justanothervote Consistency depends on how you look at something. You might be consistent at doing projects but inconsistent about maintaining something. Think of it like this. You'll organize your close but you don't consistent keep the clothes off the floor in your closet. You clear out the garage but day to day you don't keep the garage clean. In that perspective you are consistent at doing one time project but not daily maintenance.
@justanothervote3 жыл бұрын
@@AttentionTalkVideo well I am definitely always consistently busy thats for sure, but it frustrates me that can't seem to be consistent when It comes to a lot of things. Especially incremental daily tasks like trying to exercise or meditate etc. I never seem to get over the hump where things actually become habitual.
@AttentionTalkVideo3 жыл бұрын
@@justanothervote I'm not saying this applies to your situation but i find lots of patterns and consistency if you pause and look at the bigger picture or look for details in situational variability. For example, i did a video called ADHD and Unfinished Projects: An Observation. The point of the video was to illustrate something i've observed over and over. Many with ADHD forage for information (they are addicted to learning). They start something labeled a project. they are thinking they want to complete it. In reality their brain just wants to learn. When the learning is done the project is done even thought it is unfinished. If you look at the situational variables of the tasks you often complete but don't complete consistently you might find a receipt.

Hi Jeff. Can you please fix your podcast-episode about mindset on attentiontalkradio?! There's an insane amount of clicks in it (via google-podcast-app), wich made me stop listening. And another tip/feedback: please use a better microphone for your recordings, it would make such a big difference in listening experience. I enjoy listening to your podcast in my car.
