I (an ADHD mom) definitely struggle intensely with my own discomfort when my two ADHD kids misbehave or push back on rules/boundaries. From the outside, it looks like I'm just being inconsistent; from the inside, it is a self-protective measure to stop the pain. My husband (who is non-ADHD and probably part Vulcan) says if I don't give in they'll stop pushing back and start behaving...except that that isn't true. If I stand my ground, I have extreme discomfort in the moment as well as discomfort to look forward to in the future. I sound hopeless because I truly feel that way some days....which is either the cold truth, my ADHD emotional dysregulation, or both.

I think the more equipped you were with parenting strategies it would help you. Please check out the Behavior playlist here and Scaffolding Better Behavior, the Parent Behavior Training program.

The more hyperactive of my three boys is always saying, "You are not nice!" when we try to get him to use the toilet. It makes us feel bad and can even turn us against each other. When he was 2 he had no problem squatting very still on the toilet. But after he got constipation it's such a struggle. He's also an excellent actor and button pusher. But he's like a method actor who can't turn it off. So when time permits I turn to pretend play to get him to sit. When will he be ready to accept reality?
