But recording a lecture and listening to it....and re-listening (several times) because I drifted off daydreaming... again...just means I have to put in 3-4 times the work ...just to be at the same level as a person who can focus in class. The reality of that is kinda depressing. Honestly, I'm not surprised that some people just want a drug to help focus

Thank you for these tips. Another one I’ve learned (after struggling through the university system with procrastination and turning in all assignments at 11:59pm of the deadline for 5 years) is the 5 minute rule. Just commit to spending 5 minutes on an assignment to get started, that way you feel accomplished and you might get in the zone to get more done. Also, you don’t shame spiral for not being able to study for an hour because you hit your goal of 5 minutes. I use this at work too when I’m struggling to initiate a task. Great video!!

I can't do 10 minutes of study. Once I get started, I tend to be in the 'zone' for about two hours. If I get out of the zone, I find it harder to get back to it. That's on a good day though. If I take too long of a break, I'll feel too overwhelmed to get back to study. I also tend to do better with just one task, switching between tasks gets too overwhelming, I find it really hard to start a new task once I've completed the previous one, which rarely happens straight away anyways, it normally takes me days just to complete one task! I haven't been diagnosed yet, however I'm planning on applying for an assessment. I think that's why I struggled with A levels, as I did 3 subjects. The exams for each of them were also close together.

Same. I'm also 29 and recently diagnosed with ADHD (taking elvanse) and dyslexia whilst at uni - something that went undiagnosed all through primary and high school. I felt very damaged by the school system and after 10 years of travel, I decided to find redemption and return to study. I'm studying Outdoor leadership and management for a number of reasons mainly because it suits my passions and a big part was to be able to give back to younger versions of myself - to let them know that you are ok and you just learn and get engaged in learning differently. I've struggled immensely with the written work but I'm managing to get a lot of help through the uni, I've been able to get a laptop, printer, and software and extra time on assessments. I also a personal tutor who helps me break down the work and talk through in more detail what needs to be done. This is done through the UNI and DSA (if you are in the UK) you can get a mentor also that helps you furthers structure yourself with studying and structuring your day to day. I think a good tip is to really think about why you are doing it in the first place and remind yourself when it gets tough why you are there so that you don't lose track and think wtf am I here for and putting myself through this. I think overall don't be afraid to ask for help no matter how big or small - that's what the uni is there for. And if needs look outside of the uni to get the help you need so that things can be fast-tracked, you can also say to the uni hey this is what iv done outside of the unis help so that it can be fast-tracked and they can help with the funding with that also. Just remember it is ok that get distracted easily and you have started this because it's what you love and not to punish yourself.

In high-school (secondary school in Ireland) I was 'naturally' smart enough to be encouraged to switch to higher level Math classes. However, because it required such concentration in class (the teacher moved fast through the lessons) I was lost from the first day...and could not even do the homework because it was based on what we were meant to learn in class that day...it also required a couple of hours homework per evening for just that subject alone....so needless to say I was told I was lazy and demoted back to normal math classes. The lack of attention coupled with procrastination meant I was always told I can do better but I need to apply myself....I actually felt lazy and guilty my whole life in school & college....at least I discovered ADHD discussions on KZbin a couple of years ago and realized that these guys were describing me! I know there are coping 'strategies', but honestly I just want to try the drugs to see what it feels like to be able to focus on the information at hand....I've been 'coping' my whole life, but these little strategies don't change the fact that paying attention while Listening to, or reading, material is almost an impossible task for me

Thank you so much. Actually, a special additional thank you for the "take breaks" line at the beginning. It's a simple thing but Wow, I realised it took out the general guilt I feel when I take an hour to go through a 15mn video with seventy rewinds. This is my last semester of undergrad and the first one I start with knowledge and medication for ADHD and the accompanying depression, so this video really comes at the perfect time. The simple understanding of adapting to my functioning rather than trying to change it is a life-changing step. And with that come tricks as small as setting a timer when watching youtube (or getting a transparent water bottle because I don't think about drinking if I don't see the water) that seem like nothing, but all these little things together bring sensible improvment. I can finally get adjustments at uni, including a student tutor, but I find it rather unusual that I wouldn't need much help from them in understanding the classes: I need them as a body double to help getting started with work - but I guess it's not odd when it's ADHD 😄. I really hope I won't fall behind this time, when all the previous times I did I had the exact same will and motivation to do well (a good proof - to teachers, family and mainly myself - that it's not the problem).

My whole school career I was in special Ed classes. I tried to goto college about 3yrs ago I completed 2 semesters barley. My second semester I dropped classes and failed one class. I just could not handle it. Now I’m thinking about trying again but I’m not confident In myself enough. I just got proscribed a medicine today and I hope it works. My ADD hinders me a lot in every aspect of my life. I’m tired of it.

I kinda disagree with the party one, for myself, when I was studying I would go out every Saturday night, that was my party night, I'd go to the same club, drink a bunch and dance my arse off. What it meant for me is that I felt committed and driven to doing my allotted work for the week on the weekdays and on Saturday before dinner, because I knew I was going out to party, and I knew I'd probably be a bit hungover on Sunday and spend the day in bed. This worked quite well for me in terms of scheduling, having a reward at the end of each week for the hard work I was putting in, and- funnily enough- giving me a rest day every week, because I would schedule Sunday to be a rest day. Dancing for hours every Saturday night also helped with my energy levels because I got a lot of that fidgety restlessness out, I'd tire myself out physically, so I could sit still more in lectures the next week. Anyway, just my two cents, don't forget to also schedule fun!

Slightly off topic but what are your tips for the workplace? I work in sales and have found I’ve slowly gained more responsibilities, I find it very hard focusing and remembering certain tasks and tend to mind wander or forget when being given tasks from my boss. It’s really frustrating as I know and my company know I’m not stupid but it sometimes feels that way. Thank goodness for a good CRM system however =)

I admittedly don't have much experience in a more mentally focused workplace but I think his tip to have two different calendars set up is one of the better ways to keep yourself on track. It will feel weird at first but I've seen a tip where you write down every task you are given in a notebook as you are given them, then transferring them somewhere else in a more legible format. This also helps you keep track of responsibilities when entering a new work environment. Organization is one of the most difficult things for us to master but one of the most worth it in order to maintain consistency which I think is one of the biggest factors that leads us to failing or getting fired. I wish you the best.

The right environment really makes a huge difference. I'm one of the few around me who prefers the lockdown life. Don't get me wrong, it would have been a disaster had I to stay in my student dorm alone but I've been very lucky. I can study in a calm home with: 1) no functioning energy spent on getting ready to go out and public transportation in a noisy city. 2) external structure from family. > especially with sleeping and eating at regular times even when my brain fuel has been spent on a morning lecture and I would usually be too tired to cook (the simple execution energy it requires to stop what I'm doing and start something else, agh!). 3) an empty office room no one used that is separated from the bedroom. > I don't have to sit still on my chair for the remaining of the class and exhaust myself with restraint when I can't listen, and instead can just leave the online lecture and read it on my own when my brain has more energy. 4) Online classes have: No distraction from other students + more visual lecture slides + our teachers write on a tablet they display during the online class and send us the saved document from it afterwards, so I can simply [[ listen ]] while I keep my hands busy with a doodle or smt. It's all a real game-changer for me.

For me it's usually looping whatever song is my current Hyperobssessive song while studying helps. The added benefit is when I listen to it again it's as if it "unlocks" those memories. 20 years later "Mobscene" by Marilyn Manson makes all the info I studied for my amateur radio license flood back into my mind

I am stuck, I have diagnosed with Adult Adhd when I was 21 years old. Now, I am 36 years old. Unfortunately, with the guidance of my family, I unfortunately went to school of "software engineering" and I just hate it since I can not do it because of lots of distractions (inner distractions and outer distratsion) Moreover, I want to read reading books,but I can not. it is just pain. If there is any other tactics you know: such as reading loud. or when you are doing some specific work in front of laptop, by having a conversation with yourself on your own so that you do not move away what exactly you are doing (I always find my self doing something else because of a distraction). I am in misarebla situation and I need help. I can not earn money as well. As a 36 years old person, I depend on my father and mother which pisses me of. just Please help. thank you.

How do i make my brain feel motivated enough to start? Like i record lectures but never really get to listen to then or rego over stuff. Where is the time when i have other grade based stuff to do or painful readings that take me hours?

I can't listen to things with words and struggle with hyper focus and time blindness. Some of the most effective things I have done is going to a coffee shop for a change of scenery as time is slower with people around and when at home (I'm a distance learner) I have started listening to acoustic covers of music which is 1-2 hours long so I know when it's finished that time has passed and it's time for a break.

Thank you for the tips. I'm what everybody calls an "Older" student. I was recently diagnosed with severe ADHA. I've been going to college for the last 30 yrs on and off. Some subjects I do 110% with very little studying. Others, not so well. I love math, but have have taken 5 college algebra classes and failed. I really enjoy doing the homework , but when I get to the test, all I see is an alien language. Now that I'm on the meds, I'm afraid to try again, or fail again.

A good tip for uni students is: To sit in any random class (preferably not related to yours) that's going on, that has a nice 'study' vibe. By this I mean that even in university not all subject/course classes are the same, some are really serious classes and you want to sit in the corner f such a class. The environment where everyone is serious and no one is on the phone is a great motivator. Make a fun game, usually most classes in university are atleast 1 to 1.5 hours long, try to use the class as a timer instead of staring at the clock in the library or your room. I find classes to be the perfect place to work on essays and other very 'boring' assignments because I can't physically get up and leave the class, I cannot snack on something, be on the phone or plug earphones in my laptop and binge my favourite show, as I will stand out like a sore thumb and likely place myself in the teacher's attention. If you are out of uni, then try going to public libraries, unfortunately with the internet and various devices people don't really go to libraries anymore (you'll see maybe some older people say of say boomers or gen x), I go on purpose without my earphones and put a timeout on my phone's 'addictive' apps. Lastly remember to reward yourself and not try to ride the productivity train, usually going out in nature can be a good reward to do immediately after an intense study/work session alongwith snacking and watching your favourite show afterwards. The going out in nature is key though as (atleast with me) it gives me a sense of break from monotony to just be with my thoughts and enjoy nature (as much as possible) till all the racing thoughts have susided and I'm in a tired relaxed mood.

If ur having trouble w cleaning: I drink coffee everyday first thing no matter what, so lately when I put it in the freezer (I like it cold) I put on a timer and clean for 10 min every single time. It’s not long so if there’s other stuff u need to do just pretend u have no choice. It’s insane how much easier it’s been to keep up w dishes and trash and stuff like that.

Lot of superfluous and unhelpful advice here. Highlighting has been proven to be an inferior form of learning. Videos are a bad way to learn simply because the device you're watching it on has a ton of distractions. Scheduling simply doesn't work for a lot of adhd people. Overall poor advice.

I gave up on school half way through year 7 (I'm in year 10 now) due to severe depressive episodes, after the depressive episodes I just gave up on responsibility, all I wanted now was to be happy. So I was rude to teachers, didn't do homework, played video games and watched youtube. Here I am in year 10, I have fallen behind and there's probably no way to catch up, so I gave up. Is there anything I can do at this point, gscses coming next year and to be honest I'm not anxious but at the back of my head I still care and don't wanna fall behind. Any help?

Can you stay behind a year or take on additional tuition? If not, consider an apprenticeship?
@oldwiseman57853 жыл бұрын
@@ADHDMastery Idk if I wanna stay behind a year because I pretty much lost motivation to even get my grades up, so simply going down a year wouldn't help nothing. I would try to talk to my doctor but I only get to talk over the phone once every 4 weeks or more because of quaranteen. I would maybe consider an apprenticeship in the future but Idk. Also I would get an additional tution but my parents say it costs a bunch of money.

Maybe you don't want it badly enough? Not sure what else to suggest, but perhaps look for work and then fund some part time study for yourself.
@oldwiseman57853 жыл бұрын
@@ADHDMastery yea it feels as if I don't wanna do it but I wanna do it, I wish I was intrested in school so I could sort of hyperfocus on it (like I do with other side hobbies). But school just sounds and is too boring for me to even put effort it. I currently don't take meds and never have taken meds, I heard taking it at a really young age can impact physical/mental development in bad ways. So I'm just waiting till I'm a fully grown adult I guess :/

@@oldwiseman5785 Hiya, I just wanted to say that it really isn't too late. Due to anxiety there have been a multitude of things I know I could have done better on otherwise, paid attention to and completed. But, being in Year 10, You have so much time to figure out who You are, what You want for yourself and who you want to be. Year 10 was when I became a happier person for the first time in a while and focussed on myself more- just because it's 'GCSEs' doesn't mean your mental health is any less important, because at the end of the day it's literally a test of memorisation- about time it's modified! It doesn't measure intelligence of worth. And if it Helps, no body looks at GCSEs after the next step of education 🤫 There might be an A-Level or Apprenticeship You're interested in? Try Your best to pass if You feel that is right for you, and maybe find something You're passionate about along the way. Show up for yourself when you can, because your future is worth investing in. I Hope this Helps a bit, and I Know it might sound silly,, but study aesthetics (light/dark academia) and fun stationery if possible can be motivating. But the number one priority is feeling mentally well. Also, I recommend Marisa Peer who is a therapist on KZbin too, I discovered Her recently. Recently I discovered how important it is to pay attention to what Your Body Needs: think do I Need water,, excercise,, a blanket/jumper/tea! I always thought yeah right water 🙄 especially for headaches but apparently they were maybe right 😂 I understand that it's often not as easy said than done. And, it doesn't matter the relationships With teachers, there will be at least one to Help: they Care even when it doesn't seem like it! I Wish the best of Luck For Your health and happiness 💛

Honestly, the study techniques medical students commonly use are very ADHD-friendly -Anki (mobile and PC version) Flashcard app with a bit of a learning curve, but once you get past it, it's a game changer. Make your cards (there's a giant Anki Reddit community for help), then do them whenever (bus ride, waiting in line, elevator, etc). Since it gives you a spaced repitition schedule, you pretty much have a study plan set out for you. So good, I can't hype it enough. Free on Android and PC. -If lecture is recorded, and attendance isn't mandatory, don't go. But dedicate a specific time each day to watch the lecture at 2x speed so you get in the habit/don't fall behind. -Reward yourself for studying, within reason. Positive reinforcement works! But one thing that has really helped me is onenote on my ipad. I love the way I can quickly go between notebooks and sections and pages to add information quickly without worrying about finding it again. And also being able to organise everything into very specific sections has been helpful too
