Omg this is the first time I’ve ever heard someone say that they either talk too much or too little, I thought I was just weird (I am split very evenly introverted and extroverted). I’ve been diagnosed with combined type since I was 5 so it’s interesting for me to hear perspective from people who were diagnosed as adults (I’m in my 30s now). Despite growing up knowing I have ADHD I am finding I am really only beginning to understand how it impacts me.
@saml40044 жыл бұрын
Olivia M I have definitely gotten that way more as I’ve gotten older. I can be both introverted and extroverted, on the Myers Briggs I am actually 51% extroverted, so very evenly split. Knowing as I’ve grown up that I have ADHD has both been a blessing and a curse. The good thing is that I was able to work extremely hard to learn how to manage my emotions and symptoms (I am actually diagnosed as being rather severe), but as I have gotten older and changed into an occupation that requires more structure and these skills I’m running into challenges again which is quite frustrating given how hard I worked to overcome them. However, I am incredibly grateful I was diagnosed as a child because I know for a fact I would not be where I am today if I hadn’t been.

Music has also saved me from ADHD. I started playing piano at age 4 and discovered a real gift for it (near perfect pitch, all that). I later started playing flute, and it was my absolute love and passion. As my social anxiety skyrocketed, music was how I made friends - through choir, orchestra in high school/college, playing in a rock band for a few years. The passion for music has never left - I now write music like crazy when I’m not hyperventilating at work from social anxiety. It’s such a huge outlet. It’s really what has helped keep me plugged into society in one way or another instead of retreating into my depression hole. So glad to have heard your story Olivia!!
@mariecarie14 жыл бұрын
Olivia M Amazing that we have such a similar story through music! My mom was like a drill sergeant when it came to practicing lol but she also did interesting things to help, like let me add a ring to a paper chain every time I played through a piece or practiced a scale 5 times. Things like that really helped. Otherwise, my ability to stick with music is incredible compared to anything else, particularly writing or arranging music. It’s the weirdest thing! Writing and arranging music is like a really fun puzzle and it keeps me so engaged. I used to love figuring out piano arrangements for pieces I knew and making little orchestral “accompaniments” on my Clavinova. I just opened a Soundcloud account for some of my stuff, with like 6 followers (most of which are bots 😂 - I haven’t started promoting my stuff yet at all) - I’ll have to find the link when I’m not on my phone and send it to you!

'I can't imagine that it's like to focus'. Wow. That is the perfect way to put it at least from my personal experience. Been on concerta (basically adderall) for months now, really opened my eyes to what it feels like to focus. Don't know if it's just me, but over time it's effects dim down as well

I greatly appreciate these interviews and your videos. It's helpful to hear the struggles I've had for years are shared by others and may be more than personal and manageable failings. I've recently started my journey to understand if I have ADHD and how to manage it. I feel like I may have had it for years, but it always seemed manageable or not real until I've had to work from home for months due to the pandemic. The lack of focus and the distractions are so out of control right now. Hopefully my first psychiatry appointment later this month will help.

Hey man, it's funny to see how we (ADHD inantentive type) and of course ADHD people in general have so many things in common. I've been diagnosed somewhere around 5 years ago, and been digging deep into the disorder (all though i don't like to call it a disorder myself). I learned so much about it, and with it myself. Now for the first time i'm in the proces of getting medication. If you'd like i'd deffos like to come on your channel and talk about it, together we're strong and together we can piece al the pieces together and make the most out of it! Really love what you do and love your channel, helped me out a lot!

I used to say I had “music add” because I could never listen to a full song because my brain wanted to listen to more. But now I got diagnosed with adhd at 27 and am beginning to understand all of the hyper focus and hyperactivity and everything makes so much sense now. I also make and play music as my outlet! It’s the absolute best outlet for anyone with adhd. Except I can’t finish a song before starting a new one.. it hardly happens.

I don't know how to get my parents to take my suspicion that I might have it seriously. And last year my mom laughed me off when I told her I got diagnosed with depression and anxiety and she said it was just because I was far from home and missed my family. I am home now and it has only gotten worse. And scarily enough, I'm in my final year and I'm scared I won't get my International Baccalaureate(IB) diploma since online learning has been so difficult for me. I like what the speaker said about music because learning to play the piano last year helped a lot, but since borders are closed and I can't get back to school, it's difficult to motivate myself by doing something I actually enjoy. And I forgot my crochet hook and knitting needles at school😭 I have a traditional instrument at home (the mbira) but when i start playing it, I can't help but ditch my online classes. But in school, being obligated to actually go to a physical classroom knowing that I'll get in trouble if I skipped class really helped. Now I've been trying to tell myself that since I'm not diagnosed then I dont have it and if I keep telling myself I don't have it, then I'll actually get done with my work on time. Hasn't been working. Anyways, thank you for the speaker, the content is very helpful so far. Also it's the same for me, I felt I couldn't exactly relate that much to HowToADHD and then I found THIS channel!! Both channels are incredibly helpful.

I’m guessing you’re African? Our community doesn’t believe in mental health issues. I think it’s best you seek professional help. Getting diagnosed and working with your doctor might be best instead of waiting years later. Hopefully you don’t need your family’s consent or financial help to do this. Best of luck. Be safe!

I got accepted in law school when I was 19 years old. I lasted a year with low grades. I studied long hours. I still don't know how I made it through that first year. Obviously I did not go back to law school. It was hard. I am not medicated because I take meds that don't go well with ADHD meds. :( Edit: I am a goldsmith and It took me forever to do my syllabus. I learned to speak French and English after I was 26. My pronunciation is pretty good in both languages. Reading skills are great. Writing skills is another story. Olivia M I suspect the blood tests are to check that there are no nutritional deficiences going off as this can create ADHD-like symptoms. This is why eating right can improve ADHD symptoms, however it cannot cure like some uneducated people say. :)
