Adi Kailash Yatra, also known as Adi Kailash Mansarovar Yatra or Chhota Kailash Yatra, used to be a pilgrimage trek located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is considered a sacred journey for Hindus and is an alternative to the more famous Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in Tibet.
Now the journey is done via road through the newly opened 'Dharchula - Tawaghat - Ghatiabagarh - Lipulekh pass - Tibet/ China border' road.
►►Here are some key points about the Adi Kailash Yatra:
1. Location: Adi Kailash is situated in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, India. It is located near the Indo-Tibetan border and shares its landscape with the magnificent peaks of the Himalayas. Whereas Om Parvat is located even closer to the Indo-Tibetan border towards the Lipulekh Pass side.
2. Religious Significance: Adi Kailash is revered by Hindus as a sacred site believed to be one of the many abodes of Lord Shiva. It is considered a smaller version of Mount Kailash in Tibet.
3. Old Trekking Route: Earlier the yatra involved a challenging trek through rugged terrains and high altitudes. The journey started from the village of Dharchula and passed through villages like Gala, Budhi, Gunji, and Nabidhang before reaching the Adi Kailash base camp.
4. Duration: Generally, it used to take around 18 days to complete the trek, including acclimatization and rest days. Now with the new road to Adi Kailash and Kailash Mansarovar, the trek is now a road trip of 7-9 days.
5. Altitude: The highest point during the yatra is 4280m.
6. Sacred Sites: Along the route, travelers visit various sacred sites such as Neem Karoli Baba Ashram called Kainchi Dham, Chitai Golu Devta Temple, Jageshwar DhamNabidhang, Parvati Sarovar, Gauri Kund, and Om Parvat.
7. Best Time to Visit: The ideal time for Adi Kailash Yatra is during the summer months of May to June and September to October (if no rainfall).
8. Permits and Permissions: Since the yatra is located near the Indo-Tibetan border, it requires obtaining necessary permits and permissions from the Indian authorities. One can get their ILP (INNER LINE PERMIT) made in Dharchula near Indo-Nepal Border in the Pithoragarh district.
