Thomas ran in the Evo 1, and he and Robbe review. It's a $500 race day shoe, weighing a minuscule 5.1 oz. (145 g) for a US M10.5. Really, it's shocking how light it is. But it's definitely a limited use shoe, and we'll tell you why. Available now on StockX for absurd prices, coming November for drop number 2.

This is a stroke of genius by Adidas. Pushing super shoe tech beyond its limits to surpass Nike, shocking the world with a $500 dollar price tag and the follow up with Assefa's record breaking time. Yes, $500 dollars only makes sense for the people that want absolutely every advantage and are able to pay for it. That's the point and it pushes the other manufactures to play ball, too. Everyone wins.

At $500 one might wonder if theyd even plan on selling any. Sounds more like they made a formula 1 style extreme race model not commercially feasible, give them to their own athletes, shatter some world records and portrait themselves as fastest brand in the running world. This promotes their other, commercially feasible, shoe lines.

Good you got to try these so we can have some idea. Sounds like a full review would be tricky though but hope you can sort of do by racing in them maybe over say 10K so might not trash them as quickly. Price and value very tricky. I have spent far far more on shoes over the years I either hated or just did not use much but could not return and certainly they were going to offer little or nothing to my training & racing. As you say if running is your passion and this may help a bit on race day then why not. After all take any super shoe now and add a daily trainer and you are there anyway on cost. Also doesn’t this have parallels to the Vaporfly Elite - tiny numbers made and sold but paved way for 4% and then first NEXT%.

Based on what you say, the sub 3 hours marathon target for that shoe is really marketing talking. Realistically, no-one above 2h20, or even 2h15, should get them. You can get faster by doing other things when you target those times: 4 + months with a coach, or a year with a running club cost, less than that. Or maybe you can't, but then, the shoe isn't worth (in my opinion), the small gain it will get you.

So true! The fact that Kipchoge won the marathon, the talk of the town is the 500 dollar shoe that everybody’s talking about. Adidas took away the hype that Nike could’ve made with Kipchoge win. That’s marketing. Also, it’s good Adidas released this to the public when it could’ve just limit this to only its athletes like you guys said. Lastly, I’ve heard people spending way more in road cycling and for that matter those Jordans, whether for more performance or swag, this is no different and let’s not forget money spent on the latest electronic devices these days.

This review was more satisfying then actually buying the shoe and testing it out. 500 bucks saved and I feel like I know everything I need to know about it. Re: 500 dollars. I think all this does is make 300 dollars adios prime x2 seem normal - which it isn’t. It’s absurdly expensive. But yes cyclists drop thousands on bicycles so running is still a comparatively inexpensive sport. Let’s keep it that ways

Looks amazing, and the tech and innovation is incredible. But there needs to be a discussion about what limit there can be for purchasable performance. Not an issue for 99% of people, but maybe for the people it matters most to. Imagine high schoolers competing, and one can't afford a shoe like this? Yes, nowadays you cna buy supershoes at fairly ok prices dueing sales, bit imagine a future where we have 1000$ shoes for 10% performance or something like that?
@therunophil
@therunophil Жыл бұрын
value is defined by what someone is willing to pay, and I guess it will sell out. I wouldn't buy it for 500 and nobody is being forced to do so, fair play Adidas. If the price comes down substantially I may consider it, just like I bought a discounted Prime X Strung, I don't "need" any of my supershoes but there are plenty of hobbies that cost way more.
@QronoZ713
@QronoZ713 Жыл бұрын
Nobody is forced to, but imagine a scenario where two athletes are competing on an unequal playing feel due to one not being able to afford this kind of shoe? Imagine in maybe 5 years and we have shoes that are 10% more efficient and cost 1000$? This is an issue that must be addressed for fairness
@therunophil
@therunophil Жыл бұрын
@QronoZ713 it's true that expensive innovations skew the playing field, but has it ever been level, and how much influence does it really have? The Vaporfly 4% was crazy expensive for it's time and not exactly know for durability. Alphafly. Prime X, Endorphin Elite..., the list of super expensive shoes is long and there is so much more help money can buy you. Look at car racing, it's either unfair with money influencing how much R&D you can afford or there is no innovation if everyone has to drive the standardised chassis and drivetrain. Someone who can afford expensive shoes, tech, coaches ... has of course an advantage, but how much is it? Compared to EVA foams around 4% for supershoes but I bought the Adios Pro 3 and Endorphin Pro 3 for well under 200 each, I got a Vaporfly 1 under 100 bucks, will the Evo be so much better? Anyways the shoe is a measurable but small factor in running, at every marathon in ran in supershoes I was beaten by thousands of people in Brooks or Pegasus shoes...

They restricted certain swim suits when they clearly created an imbalance in swimming. They'd do the same if elite racing shoes got that skewed. Worrying about What Ifs is silly. These are legal, expensive and they work. They're pushing innovation, good for them. Time will bring down the price of tech.

Thanks for the initial impressions. You are right. This is a shoe for those pros and near pros in running that have optimized all aspects of their life towards running, from nutrition to sleep, run coaching, mental coaching, strength training, clothing and other equipment plus 100+ weekly miles regularly. I am not anywhere near that. I can pick up bigger leaps investing in the other areas I have listed above. Heck, I even thought perhaps Endorphin Elite was too elite for me. Maybe so but I can buy it and put more use out of it than this one. Seriously, that shoe offer much more value for me. And yes, please talk about Kipchoge's Alphafly 3. It is a shoe I can relate more. I had my marathon PR in v1.

It kind of feels that Adidas are contradicting themselves here. On one hand they’re offering this shoe as their ultimate marathon shoe and have prioritised lightness and then on the other hand, the shoe they say is the ultimate shoe if there was no rules, the Prime X2 Strung, which is as heavy as strapping a housebrick to your foot! This one would also seem to fly in the face of a lot of their eco-claims because of how few miles it’s good for. Don’t get me wrong here though, it’s good to see Adidas innovating again and making proper running shoes compared to recent years when Nike was unveiling the Vaporfly and Adidas was putting out shoes that were collaborations with celebs / movie franchises!

Personally, after buying both the Adios Pro 3's and now having 2 pairs of Takumi sen 8's and one of the 9's, I've decided that for me the Adios Pro 3's are no better than my old Boston 9's. The Takumi Sen's are rockets, with a Parkrun time being just over 20 seconds quicker. My first pair of Takumi Sen's are hitting around 600km's now, and the thin rubber in the heel started wearing through at around 500km's. The shoes upper is still good, the mid sole is good and the continental rubber is still good. I would really be interested in this spray on rubber for the heel to keep the km's going. I definitely could not justify that price for shoes, but know for myself that low weight would help. I believe for myself the Takumi would be suitable for a Marathon. 😁. Can't speak for the Nike as the uppers do not seem to work for my feet, nor most other shoes for that matter. (It's not a Nike issue, just my feet are the wrong shape, and most shoes wear out really early. The Takumi's appear to have been made for my feet. The adios 3 is comfortable, but not perfect.) Good review.

the whole thing for ADIDAS is Marketing money well spend! The don’t want you to buy the EVO but the other shoes and put those one in the window only… The Pro 3 has been the base for it and they just had to find places to cut on weight. So the Pro 4 might have some sort of differences on parts where we all know need some improvements… i still love my pro 3 but also my pro 2, which gets better and better with time and is a bargain today in the Outlet Stores… the product manager said, that they had been at the end of the development with the Pro 3 and so just had to find ways to make it lighter. So your Pro 3 and even 2 are more or less as good as the EVO, just more durable!

We see what you're saying, but each shoe is basically the equivalent of a couple water bottles. I mean, think about how much crap every swag bag at a marathon comes with: a shirt you'll never wear again, a junk bike bottle, a thousand adverts and a 50-page race guide, all in a string bag that goes into the trash after the race. Even if that goes into recycling, it still gets incinerated since nothing in the U.S. gets recycled anymore. We live in a disposable world and we're all part of the problem. Let's not even talk about the paper cups and gel packets on course. If runners really cared about waste they'd carry a handheld or hydration vest the whole time. So yes, we get the hypocrisy in Adidas' "end plastic waste" motto, but in the grand scheme of wasteful things that runners do, are 1,000 pairs of 4 ounce shoes really that big of a deal? Depends what perspective you're coming from.

Kind of a misconception. That was the original rule way back from World Athletics, but has since been amended to where as long as the shoe is pre-approved by WA, it doesn't have to see wide release. So like, an athlete can't show up on race day in a proto, but if it's on the approval list ahead of time, it doesn't have to be for sale to general public.

"The rocker point is moved back to 60%..." For elites, all existing 70%+ rockers are inferior, since elites already have great rear extension in their stride before toe-off. Non-elites tend to have very poor extension and the 70% rocker geometry is probably the biggest performance enhancer, encouraging a better stride extension to feel the "pop".

Nike so dumb for getting beat to this. We've all been waiting for lighter and they kept going heavier. Light as possible w/ new foam/plate/rocker was always the end game everyone was asking for. Nike just kept wanting to make more version$

All other things being equal, the weight alone, if it's 3oz less than your current race shoe, and you run a 3+hr marathon, is probably worth about 3 min off your time. Ask the people who BQ-4min this year if they'd pay $500 for it.

Its a homologation shoe, companies need to make a small number available to the public to meet the rules for racing. The car industry has been doing this for decades.

They are testing the market how much we are willing to pay. And with every influencer trying to justify the price, like you do, people will pay this insane amount and the industry can safely raise the prices of even the lower end shoes.

And yet Kipchoge destroyed all the elite Adidas athletes in what looked like the AF V3. A shoe that will probably retail for $275. I do bust my ass in my marathon blocks but doubt the weight difference is gonna help me go more than a few seconds faster. If it did, nobody would be talking all this nonsense about “racing” in the heavy (by super shoe standards) Prime X Strung V2. It’s all out of control.

The magic is that it's lighter. If you took most or all the rubber out your current supershoe that you use - there you go, you have poor man's Evo 1. Leave a strip or two where you land in the front of the shoe, the heel is not that important.

500$ (£400 in the U.K.) and they don't tell you exactly what's the composition of the midsole? No, thank you. Adidas once PEBAX foam started to become more and more popular (Nike vulcanized and Saucony glued, if I'm not mistaken) has sticked stubbornly to TPU (which is clearly less bouncy). Comparing "apples to oranges", I've tested a brand new pair of Saucony Ride 15 EVA foam at the running track (video is available in my channel) and the difference with the Vaporfly (v.1) was just 8 seconds on a 5K. Now, my question is (if Adidas midsole is made with TPEE), why should you spend this money, while you can buy 6 pairs of brand new Ride 15 (£65)? Use them once and they will not disappoint you. Just one more thing, once carbon plated shoes became popular, I've thought that companies would have started to produce "disposable" racing shoes... but I was thinking to a relatively cheaper price (£100 max). Sorry, but £400 for a pair of "please-use-once" running shoes is simply a non-sense.

I think those who need the 0.05% gain over the nearest competitor, will either get these shoes provided by their sponsor or they are under contract with another company and will get equivalent in a year or two. This shoe will be used by elite or (most likely) those who just want to "Flex"! I always laugh at the next% runners at Parkrun 5k being outpaced by 5 year old Asics with ampliform! Lets not forget the price of these shoes truly sits in "first world problems". Impressive tech though.

The guy that ran in these shoes, where did he finish, did he win, come in second or third? the reason the vaporfly has everyone talking is because it was not only a new design or that it was the lightest shoes at the time, but it broke world records, and everyone who later got one felt the benefits and it was not a single use shoe. Yes, the woman who ran in one of these did break and set a new world record, but I argue just like in the men's, she cheated, she had a sherpa who block the wind, set the speed she should run at and told here where to run (the best path on the road).

Thanks for the review, gentlemen. However, one thing that you both failed to mentioned was the disregard for our environment. Creating a single use shoe is an environmental disaster and negates Adidas’s environment friendly shoes. Yes, being fast is key, however we are all paying the price.

I enjoyed the video until Thomas talked about adidas trying to recoup money. They are making less than 525 pairs. They are not recouping a material amount of their r&d costs. It's what Robbe said: it's a pure luxury item and is priced as such.
