Whats makes a shoe a classic, an icon, or staple that should be in every collection? Honestly, that is a hard question to answer, but I think I might have something that fits the bill in all three of those categories. I am Jacques Slade and today I bring you everything you need to know about the adidas Gazelle.
For those unfamiliar with the Gazelle, let’s go back in history a bit. The model was first launched back in 1966 and is rumored to be named after Olympic athlete Wilma Rudolph who they called the Black Gazelle after winning 3 gold medals at the 1960 Olympics in Rome. That has yet to be confirmed, but it is a good place to start.
See when the Gazelle was originally launched, it was released in 2 versions. One was red and one was blue. Back then, at least with this model, the colors weren’t there just to tell a story, the represented a different version of the same shoe. The differences were mostly based on the outsole of the shoe with the red being made for outdoor training and the blue made for indoor training.
In addition to the outsole, the Gazelle was also the 3 Stripes’ first shoe made of suede or as they called it back then, kangaroo velour.
Apparently to some folks, this was a big deal because soon after the shoe launched, it became one of the hottest shoes in the adidas line-up. From major sports events to just shoe to rock on the streets, the Gazelle was the people’s choice and adidas even decided to update the outsole to a more universal look in 1972. The new hexagonal shaped outsole helped officially make the Gazelle, the “training shoes” to get.
Fast forward to the 80s and 90s, and adidas continued to tweak the look and feel of the Gazelle to fit the time. From introducing new colorways of the shoe, to adding padding to the ankle, or changing the heel shape, the look and feel of the shoe stayed mainly the same.
That brings us to the pairs you see here. Though the Gazelle is mainly the same, it has transitioned to two version of the shoe. Let’s call them the Gazelle and the Gazelle OG. The Gazelle OG is just as the name implies, true to the original look of the shoe. The Gazelle, though not much different from the original does have a few changes. Changes such as the slightly longer tongue. This could be a result of the longer toe box, the OG’s toe box is very short.
In addition to the tongue, the Gazelle is bit more streamlined than the OG. The OG looks “fatter” by comparison. A small difference, yes, but it also plays a part in how you rock these at the end of the day. Another change, the heel. The Heel of the Gazelle is shaped to hug the heel and is more contoured to the shape of the foot. The OG on the other hand only slight wraps the heel which makes it easier to slip them on.
For me, the smoother clean look of the Gazelle win over the OG which is why I’ll probably be grabbing a few of these colors this summer. Adidas Originals has a rich heritage when it comes to kicks and the Gazelle is one of the many that have stood the test of time to reach the levels of a classic sneaker. I mean think about it, this shoe was originally launched almost 50 years ago and you can still see people rocking these like they just dropped yesterday.

Follow up to that. I honestly don't think you did much research. The gazelle og is the much more streamlined and smooth midel and is considered to be much better and more popular than the gazelle 2.

American's don't know nothing about Adidas. I bet they've never even seen the SPZL releases, or the city series trainers and runners like Hamburg, Munchen, LA Trainer, New York... and tons of the vintage releases already popular in the Europe and Asia. The most they know is Gazelle, Superstar, and Stan Smith which only got hyped in the past 1~2 years. Those who knew Sambas probably knew a bit about football (or soccer as they say). There were even some that don't believe Gazelles ever come with gum bottom smh.

Love these, just copped a pair of B&W's to mess around in. They remind me a lot of Puma Suedes (favorite sneaker of all time). I really love the Navy colorway and am wondering if I should exchange for Navy or cop the Navy at a later point. Definitely a slept on sneaker which makes them even cooler for me.

I've been wearing Gazelles since the 1980s when I was a teenager. Growing up in Manchester, pretty much every lad had either Gazelles or Samba Supers (both if you were lucky); they were just an absolute staple, and even today most blokes in Manchester will have one or the other in their wardrobe. I now play guitar and sing in a Britpop tribute band, and Gazelles are my go-to shoe for gigs. I also wore them on a recent trip to Singapore, when I walked an average 30000 steps per day sightseeing. No blisters or bunyons etc, even in massive heat and humidity. They really are unbeatable in terms of comfort/style/utility

My quick review, they squeek from day one till the very end, the tongue on the outsole just squeaks all the time and it's embarrassing, the white material of the tongue is some strange foam type material that manages to stain easy and be very stiff and uncomfortable till worn in, wear in takes about a week or so, the soles wear down very quickly even if only used on concrete, mine wore down after about a month. And my biggest gripe was the tongue in the left shoe would always slip down the side of my foot, like it was sewn in unevenly.

I think people are really sleeping on the Adidas Skateboarding trainers as they do some superb Adidas, as i have just the other week picked up some Denis BUSINITZ VULC ADV in a beautiful all burgundy colour (including the stripes) and a little black on the heel, they also come with two different colours of laces either the burgundy or black (i kept it all burgundy personally) but it was nice to have the choice. Now obviously these are really made for skateboarding in and are a lot more heavy duty than the Gazelle, but i tell you i am big into Adidas but instead of just keeping on buying Originals i'm sticking with the skate stuff as i don't know anyone of my friends with a pair, plus having BUSINITZ written instead of Gazelle or whatever just looks cool as imo.

Here's the problem with the Gazelle that you did not mention. The tongue squeaks like crazy with every step you take. I love the look, but I can't wear mine anymore. The noise they make is unbearable.

jaskor18 hey! So the place where I bought it from, they told me to use an old toothbrush, dip it in soap solution, and clean it without letting it get soaked. Clean the areas that need to be cleaned, and then wipe it with a slightly damp cotton cloth. I’ve used this method ever since I bought my own pair, and it works just fine! Hope this helps.

Suede brush, simple. Be gentle though, do ou gradually without much pressure. Best way to avoid it all in the first place is spray them with suede protector as soon as you take them out the box, don't even try them on lol. Give them a new going over every six months and dirt/water just falls off them. I never have to properly clean my Gazelles, just a wipe with a baby wipe before they go back in their box, all it takes is spending £3/$5 extra on a good, waterproof suede protector before wearing them and they'll last you for years and years. It puzzles me when people don't protect their Gazelles, or Timberland boots, it costs pennies in relation to the price of the shoes to begin with.

Got 3 pairs of Gazelles arriving from Amazon tomorrow to replace ones that have been worn too often (Black, Royal blue, Collegiate Burgundy) to join a Pink pair I got last week, the same ones as in this video (they're called Vapour Pink iirc) Takes my Gazelle collection to 97 pairs, I don't touch the OG ones either so they're all Mark 2 Gazelles, I don't like the writing placement or fit in the OGs. I have every pair in this vid except the greeny/yellow ones, which I will get at some point, just a case of keeping an eye on prices and jumping in when they're lowest, it's a damn expensive hobby lol. I'm not sure why I even started collecting them, I only owned 2 pairs of trainers before I did and I rarely wore either. Once it gets you hooked though you're done for, I spend ages trawling the net looking for rare/unusual colours. How often have I worn the 97? Most of them, once, maybe twice. I wear the black, blue, white, red and grey quite often though so they need replacing every 3 years or so. They're remarkably resilient for the non-collector, I've got a Royal Blue pair coming on for 6 years old, and they still look smart with barely any sole wear or deformation, they just don't look collection worthy anymore but perfectly wearable for anyone else. I'm from England, and these were the training shoe of choice for casuals (or Trim Trabbs, Beckenbauer, Jeans, Munich, Tobacco, La's etc) in the early 80s, when I was growing up so I've always loved the smart yet simple design of them.

The high arch in the sole hurts my feet so I rip that bit of extra padding out. I also modify the tongue by cutting it back to the first outline with scissors.

I think that’s the reason why I’m having some heel slippage in these shoes. I wear 8.5 vans but that didn’t fit me in gazelles so I got 7.5 and lengthwise they’re fine but I feel my heel slipping out a bit. Did you have the same problem?

Sparkes91 dont you mean the Indoors with the translucent “pigskin” soles??? The “gum sole” is the tanned coloured opaque soles on the likes of Hamburgs, Sambas, Berlins, Dublins etc.
