The Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) recently took action against Kiran Jadhav, Ashish Kelkar, Himanshu Gupta, Mudit Goyal, and Simi Bhaumik for breaking stock market rules. These individuals were accused of manipulating the market, cheating investors, and doing other illegal things. They were also accused of using their appearances on Zee Business TV to do these bad deeds.
These people were called 'experts' in the stock market. They had their own shows on Zee Business. Kiran Jadhav and Ashish Kelkar's show was called "Kiran Ka Kamal," Himanshu Gupta was "Hitman Himanshu," and Mudit Goyal's was "Mudit Ke Munafe." Simi Bhaumik had a show called "Simi Ke Non Stop Shares."
These "experts" worked with traders to make money illegally from the stock recommendations they gave on Zee Business. SEBI found out they made about ₹7.41 crore in less than a year by doing these bad things from February 1, 2022, to December 31, 2022. SEBI investigated them for over a year and found them guilty.
During their time on Zee Business, they worked with a trader named Nirmal Kumar Soni. He gave them a plan: they would tell him about the stock recommendations they were going to make on TV. Then, he would trade before everyone else and make money when the stock prices changed because of their recommendations. Soni promised to share the profits with them.
Soni used the early information about stock recommendations to trade for SAAR Commodities Private Limited, Manan Sharecom Private Limited, and Kanhya Trading Company. Some people associated with these companies were also involved in the crime.
Simi Bhaumik was especially greedy. She not only took the illegal profits from Soni but also got her husband, Pratha Sarathi Dhar, involved in trading using the same scheme.
All five offenders shared their recommendations before the TV show with Soni and Simi's husband. They used different phone numbers, SIM cards under fake names, and coded messages to hide their actions.
SEBI has told the offenders to give back the illegal profits and pay interest. They also can't trade stocks for a while, and the registered ones can't give advice.
There are some problems in the system that let these things happen. People don't need to be registered with SEBI to give stock advice on TV. Zee Business hired Mudit Goyal, who wasn't even registered. The rules for registered people and those who aren't aren't very different. With so many people giving advice on TV and social media, there needs to be better rules to stop this from happening again.
