Ragam Sriranjani was a forte of the doyen Sri Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer. The compositions "Marubalka", "Brochevarevare" and "Soga Suga Mridanga Thalamu" are much loved and followed by rasikas of all ages everywhere.
However, "Nee Sati Daivamendu", which he also performed, is special. It is a ‘Daru’ - an opening act of a dance performance.
Composed by Muthuswami Dikshitar in Telugu, especially for his disciple Kamalam’s maiden dance performance (arangetram), the beauty of the Daru is it has only 2 sections unlike the typical 3-sectioned sub-genres like the kriti/javali/padams - and there is a beautiful solfa passage to follow the anupallavi.
