This is what a final year nuclear medicine resident told me . Please give any insight if any of this is true or not sir . I will try to explain you the bigger picture what's going on behind the scenes. From the outside it's all looking cool and chilled branch but it's only a matter of time. Idk if you are aware about this but India has more or less started copying USA in terms of overall healthcare system. Right from insurance policies to residencies. Because look, in USA their are direct residencies for NeuroSx, CardiothoracicSx, Plastic Sx ... previously India didn't have direct residencies so India also implemented the same via DNB directly 6 years course which is exactly same like USA. The same is being happened with nuclear medicine. India introduced direct branch as a residency but there are a lot of short coming and we realised it so now even DNB seats have reduced, infact even secondary DNB seats are now available only in 4 hospitals. Previously INMAS had DNB seats and it's the only standalone institute in Delhi but to everyone's shock they no longer have nuclear medicine DNB seats. Now the picture is changing to lot of artificial intelligence and automation technologies so manpower required in diagnostic branches is decreasing drastically. Radiology people are more skilled with anatomy obviously and also with anomalies so now radiologists with fellowships in nuclear medicine are really great in demand. infact many radiologists who completed their residency even 4-5 years back are going outside india to do the fellowship if not getting it in india because very few hospitals in india are offering nuclear medicine fellowship post radiology at present but within 2 years the number is easily going to double or more because of increasing awareness and importance of radiology + nuclear medicine combination and plus in fellowship they will get low paid work force for 6 months to 1 year. And this in entirety is the exact picture of Radiology residency in USA where there is 3 years of radiology residency & in addition compulsory 1 year of nuclear medicine posting. It's just a matter of a few years when nuclear medicine physician is going to be just a requirement for opening a PET centre and will stay on a basic pay whereas the majority of work and procedures will be carried out but radiology + nuclear medicine people and they will have a huge payscale. Infact, even now when we do PET-CT guided biopsy, we call a radiologist to guide the position and all. It's really stupid that Nuclear Medicine cut-off has gone so up in recent years because people have just observed the branch superficially. I got nuclear medicine at approx. 16,000 because 4 years back nothing much was available at this rank. Remember that you are not just looking at the 3 years of residency and 2 years of SRship. You need to think about the 30 years after SRship. Even now if you check online, you will see that job openings are very very few.

Thank you for sharing this, there might be some truth to this as if we scroll around medical forums for US residents, job market for pure nuclear medicine isn't exactly great.

Your third year NM friend gave you the wrong info man . Where he/she doing pg or done pg in NM ? I think there are few centres which offer good NM course. NM is not about only diagnostic there are many things your friend doesn't tell you. institutions like AIIMS new Delhi, TATA Hospital, PGIMER Chandigarh etc offer good and complete NM course.
