I had shoulder pain for years. And I tried everything to correct it- every imaginable rehab exercise, PT therapy, everything! Then I saw Dougs video and stopped doing overhead presses (I did them because "everyone" said you should), and did cable side lat raises instead. Shoulder pain stopped. None. I could not believe it. And it has not returned and to think I suffered for years in pain. Thank you, Doug.

A Big thanks to Ric Drasin for having such a great youtube channel on bodybuilding and a special thanks to Mr Brignole for writing such an informative book "The Physics of Fitness" I haven't been able to stop reading it. The way he explains biomechanics as it relates to exercising has certainly opened a more productive exercise avenue for myself to follow. Excellent book for anyone interested in getting more out of your workout routines with a better understanding of what constitutes a better exercise vs an exercise that is not as productive. Thank you to both of you gentlemen.

On the topic of wear and tear...I am 53 years old....For decades I lifted weights, ran, did martial arts, skied and played hockey. Labored as a soldier, cargo handler and aircraft mechanic and I had a ton of fun doing it. However...my body has worn a little bit. I have torn both my rotator cuff's and one was repaired last year....I had torn two tendons off in each shoulder. This year in a month I am getting the second one repaired. What I did during this time I modified my exercise to only do the physio for my upper body and did lots of leg work, walked...what ever I could do that didn't negatively effect the shoulder healing. Eventually I will be doing more "normal" full-body workouts. I also had to recover from heart issues at 48 years old...genetic troubles that lead to heart attacks. I have to admit I am much more cautious then when I was young but I still make efforts every day to stay fit and healthy. I modify as needed and where there's a will...there's a way. Thank you for the info and I will get my hormone levels checked.

Ric keep up the good work! I have been binging on your youtube telecast for the past week and really enjoy your stories about about the golden era of bodybuilding. I always lived on the east coast but loved reading about what was happening at Gold's, Vince's, and the Muscle Beach scene. I just turned 71 and was kept motivated and enthusistic in my training by what i read about you and your comtemporaries. Hearing your oral histories about those days has provided me a fresh perspective on my own early experiences with weight training. More importantly, I am greatful for prudent, common sense advice that you continually offer about training and about life in general, particularly when you team up with Doug Brignole. The information he shares is invaluable and I look forward to seeing him on your program in the future. All the best to you both!

First off, i thoroughly respect Doug and i have adjusted my training plan tremendously as per his remarks in various videos. Just one thing about the tricep pushdown at 9:30, Doug rightfully criticises the problem with the strength curve, but instead of turning around to improve this, you could stay facing forward, get into a split stance, and just rock backwards onto your back leg at the bottom of the movement. So you end up doing a rocking motion, stay more forward with the body on the top, and as you push down, rock backwards to keep a better angle with the resistance. Jeff from Athlean-X describes this in his video "Tricep Workout Fix (SEE FASTER RESULTS!)", i think it's a good idea.

Doug ,have you published a list of the most joint friendly exercises for each body part? If so can you advise where to get it?. The book you show in the video probably judging from all the pages has a ton of physiology and theory. Speaking for me ,a "Cliff notes" version stating the best joint friendly exercises would be sufficient for most of us.

I really like Doug but the one concept of his that I don't completely agree with is that ALL muscles are able to produce the greatest forces when they are in a stretched position. There is a line of human biomechanics research known as internal muscle moment arms. These studies examine individual muscles and their "moment arms" at varying joint angles for each plane that particular muscle contracts through. Longer moment arms at certain joint angles for that particular muscle indicate that that muscle has a greater capacity to generate torque at specific joint angles that are not necessarily elongated stretch positions.
@turnippatrol4607
@turnippatrol4607 6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you took notice of my comment - I've been unable to engage with anyone on this subject. before. A couple of years ago I found information with regards to individual muscles and their internal moment arms: www.strengthandconditioningresearch.com . If you're interested in reading in-depth on the subject check out some of those articles. I tend to believe exercises that feature resistance curves that "overload" (meaning the portion of the exercise that offers maximum resistance/difficulty) the target muscle while that muscle is at a relatively long internal moment arm. My rationale is that longer internal moment arms for a particular muscle relate to its ability to generate more torque. Almost as though the muscle was "designed" to work best at those angles. For this reason it would make sense that there is potential for greater muscle fiber recruitment at those particular joint angles for that particular muscle.

I'm 60 and planning on returning to the gym after over five years of inactivity. Have had one back surgery, L4-5 is bone on bone. Squats, deadlifts, barbell rows, etc. are out. Going to have to be very careful. If I feel any twinge in my lower back, that exercise is done. Hoping I will be able to work around it as I really miss the gym. TRT has enabled me to keep some of my shape but I'm going to have to take it super easy going back.

My suggestion is to research through KZbin and other testimonials. I like it, it works good for me. But, of course you want to change things up down the road if you get bored with it. But that doesn't mean it's going to happen right away. Total Gym is great for those who have injuries. It's the most versatile machines I've ever used. That's how Chuck Norris made it through all these years. Just do some research on it.

Always a terrific discussion between you and Doug. Although Doug's expertise is in biomechanics, a show featuring Doug discussing his preferred approach to aerobic exercise would be very interesting. Keep up the great work - both of you. Doug's book is exceptional - I have a master's degree in exercise science and find his work so on-target and enlightening. My prediction: Doug will become well-known as the new "iron guru", taking training beyond what Vince Gironda provided during his legacy.

Same here, tendon popped, had it surgically fixed, looks brand new, which surprised me. Did not expect it to come back 100% and look perfect, luckily it was the tendon that ruptured and NOT the bicep muscle itself. Still have two Mitek #10 surgical screws in the ulna....
@paulhupp4293
@paulhupp4293 6 жыл бұрын
Like I said, in my case, and almost all, it is the TENDON that pops/ruptures. Not the actual Bicep muscle. The key is to get it fixed right away. Almost ALWAYS ii is the distal tendon, the tendon that connects the bicep to the lower arm bone, the Radius. The key to to have to have the bicep repaired asap, within 2-4 weeks. There are two ways they fix the ruptured tendon: one is to make a two in incision on the top of where the bicep USED to be, and pull the bicep down from your shoulder and screw what is left of the tendon INTO the Radius bone below the elbow. Ths is NOT the way to fix it because it leaves a huge scar on the top of your arm, where the bicep peaks.Bone is living tissue and the tendon will eventually GROW back, and secure into the Radius. The second way, and FAR superior, is to make the 2 inch incision at the elbow joint, go up and pull the bicep down and do the same thing, screw the tendon back into the radius. The scare will blend into the elbow joint and after 1-2 years IMPOSSIBLE to see. Looks like a normal skin fold. Me and my buddy had the same tendon rupture, at the same time, he did the first type of surgery and had a huge scar on top of his arm, me, no scar. His bicep ruptured LIFTING a 5 gallon Home Depot pale of dry, but heavy, cement mix, the weight just snapped the tendon, just like a dead lift will.

There was one vid with either Doug or Jerry Brainum that addressed aging and (I believe) low thyroid and how the body tried to make up for it's lack of hormone regulation by dumping adrenalin during/after a workout. The body being in a constant state of that which is obviously not good and perhaps a cortisol tie in?

I'm not a troll, I love Ric but I said something about his missing finger once that I'd never noticed, and someone got upset sheesh and Ric jokes about it so I told him not to get his knickers in a twist. Love Ric he's awesome, beautiful guy. Someone tell me, Doug talks about crunches but Vince Gironda hated them. Any info on that?

His book is a total steal at $50 in my opinion. I bought it a couple months back. I am a Kindle reader so I’ve no issues with his book being PDF. He goes into extreme detail on levers, force curves, etc, but it all makes sense. The exercises he shows are spot on. I might not believe in only doing them in place of everything else, but adding them into a program is well worth it. Best of all he explains exactly why they are good. I’m hoping Doug comes out with a physiology book too. He seems very intelligent.

Is it very close grip? I feel in the same scenario as you, until I moved to shoulder-length or wider pullups.....
