Learn to make an homemade center finder jig / centre marking jig. I often need to find center on boards for all sorts of different reasons like cutting in half with the table saw or mitre saw, and often the quickest and easiest way is to use my center finding jig to mark the lumber at it's center point.

I would rather have your original, fixed pin design in two or three different sizes. This adjustable model introduces the possibility of innaccuracies, I feel. There again, anything with a pencil stuck in the centre isn't going to be as accurate as a centreing rule anyhow, but I do love the handiness of these jigs. Thank you.

If you needed to tighten the pencil hole you could cut a slot the length of the block and then put bolts on either side of the pencil hole. Also you could put spacers on the bolts so they would roll and not drag down the sides of the piece.

I have to disagree on this one, having to manually align the jig every time is a hassle and increases the chance of incorrect measurements. It would be better to have multiple fixed positions to put the pins, basically just add more holes to the first jig.

How about adding multiple marks on either side of the gauge to line up the bolts for different widths of boards. Maybe measure out very 2 inches and mark it with a Sharpie to line up the bolts. Great idea for a 1 size fits all center finder.
@dwightl5863
@dwightl5863 6 жыл бұрын
Ok for close enough. Colin measuring the bolts from the center to the bolt with the same "gauge" will yield much better accuracy.

Isn't it better to have the thin strips of wood cut off to be on the orher side of the blade? If the thin strip is between the blade and fence, a kickback chance is very high. Speed square is faster just draw two diagonal lines the intersection is the middle

You probably measure the original instead setting up the nut. Mab be usable for repeat. But you may build a jig with a gear in the middle and teeth on the side trail with a T track base. So when you dial those pin move equal distance. But the chalange is teeth size and play between teeth.

Colin, I don't know how I missed this but here's something for you. I know this is an old video. I hope you see this. You looked like you were in a big hurry here. Don't wait for that PVA glue to dry. Take my idea. Moisten the hell out of one side of the part you wanna glue and put a spot of CA glue on the other part. Put them together for an almost instant bond. Don't dawdle. You can thank me later. Cheers.
@LarryB-inFL
@LarryB-inFL 6 жыл бұрын
Am I missing something, or couldn't you simply have taken the original jig and drilled a couple of spots at different widths from the center, and put (removable) dowels in those for more narrow boards? Seems *much* easier...and, frankly, waaaay less likely to screw up due to not setting the two screws properly.
@MarcilioPrado
@MarcilioPrado 6 жыл бұрын
Larry B I've done that to the first jig. 3 stops each side covers 100% of my "center-finding" needs.
@knecht105
@knecht105 6 жыл бұрын
This jig is FULLY adjustable, but the first jig can be modified to fit most of your needs with extra dowels as you suggest.

Perhaps there is a way to set a controlled offset from center?
@Bright8888
@Bright8888 6 жыл бұрын
Yes Colin, the jig is fully adjustable and it's a good design. The only issue is that the two screws must be exactly the same distance from the center. Like Larry B suggests, if there are 2 or 3 holes drilled on either side at the precise spots, the jig will serve the same purpose without the need to position the two screws at the right spots.

By the time you carefully set the two bolts equally spaced from the center, you could have laid out the center of the board you are trying measure!! AND that pencil is not round, so measuring to it is inaccurate.

what a conundrum, you need a center finding jig to find the center of your center finding jig
@jjbailey01
@jjbailey01 6 жыл бұрын
How do you quickly, accurately and repeatedly adjust this? Or do you just get it close, then run it once, flip it, and run it again to get an average center?
@turnerc23
@turnerc23 4 жыл бұрын
I think the video explains the method of adjustment, but I'm grateful for your idea of flipping it to verify accuracy.
@jjbailey01
@jjbailey01 4 жыл бұрын
@@turnerc23 I have yet to find a pencil sharpener that gets the point exactly concentric to the outside of the pencil. So the method of adjustment shown in the video is only "close enough" at best. It doesn't take much to put the center point of a center finder annoyingly off center.

I honestly couldn't think of any bearings you could use on a bolt but having worked with spacers recently they came to mind. You would need to have a bolt with more threads and maybe washers and jam nuts to keep the spacers in place.
