English Literature | William Wordsworth: poetic style and main themes

William Wordsworth is considered as one of the most representative Romantic Poets of the first generation. Together with S.T. Coleridge he wrote the Lyrical Ballads, in which it is possible to find some of his main themes, together with a Preface where Wordswoth expresses his point of view about the concept of Poet Prophet, of Language and of topics that should be treated by poetry.
This video also gives a special insight into some interpretations of Wordsworth's poems (f.i. I wandered lonely as a Cloud or The Daffodils) concerning the use of colours and the concept of Nature as an active force, an organic living whole that can be considered as a source of inspiration and joy for the artist.
The different "levels" of the Universe belong together in a pantheistic world of spirituality, in which the humblest elements are meant to convey the highest truths.

Thank you for this analysis, it helped clarify a couple of things. I just finished reading Jonathan Bate's "Radical Wordsworth" which was an entertaining read, but strongly coloured by the author's own politics and ethics. Many of the points you discussed were not in the book although it consists of more than 500 pages, and Wordsworth's change from a "radical" of his time to a "conservative" was not discussed at all, only mentioned. I suspect that Wordsworth's conservatism had a lot to do with his sense of rootedness in the landscape and the importance of such a rootedness to a person's identity, but obviously, Bate didn't want to discuss such matters.

Thank you for your valuable lessons, Sara. Your explanations are always very clear and passionate. In this case, though, I don't totally agree with what you say about the scene being set at night-time. I don't think he would have noticed all that in the dark: the colours, the movements, especially since he doesn't describe the moon. I believe that the reference to the stars, the milky way and by extension to the night sky, are a simile, introduced by "as". Just like the stars that twinkle and shine, these daffodils stand out with their bright colours, dancing and flickering "in sparkling waves".

Hi Sarah! Thank you for your words! Actually you are right: he didn't watch the scene during the night, it was obviously something that he experienced in tge daylight. My reference to the stars (= daffodils) and the Milky Way (which he explicitly mentions in the poem) are a metaphor of the two levels, earth and sky, that mirror into eachother. His decision to mention the Milky Way was a reference to the the colour white (in contrast with other ways he could have used to describe the sky, including dark images of the night). Obviously it doesn't refer to the moment when he watched the flowers, but to his perception of colours, and metaphorical description of nature 😊
