Administrative Processing is the label used by the State Department to describe the situation when a case has had its interview, but visa issuance is delayed. It could be held up due to the applicant, forgetting to bring all required documents to the interview, a suspicious consular officer asking for more evidences ( 221(g) denials), a problem in the consulates visa printing process (like the NVC Computer Failure of June 2015: No Visas for 14 days), the consulate performing further investigations to verify details or search for fraud, or to request a Security Advisory Opinion that queries databases of various government law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

As the possible causes of Administrative Processing are so broad, there is no "standard" for how it will take. It can take from weeks, to years to be resolved.
Administrative processing can be triggered by an applicant forgetting to bring all of the required documents to the Interview. In a recent case Sasha forgot to bring her American fiancé's most recent tax return the interview. The consular officer said "Everything is ok. But before we can issue the visa you must first provide the missing document." She rushed the requested documents to the consulate, but the passport and visa did not arrive and the consulate wouldn't provide any updates. Unfortunately, she had already booked her flights. She missed her original flight, but was able to rebook. When that departure date arrived, she still didn't receive her visa, still got no updates and finally lost her ticket price.
Depending on the consulate, resolution of a missing document AP case, is often treated as a low priority. Sometimes many weeks go by before the visa is finally issued. It is not clear if that is what happened in Sasha's case, because soon after her interview the Department of State's NVC computers failed. For her it was the perfect AP storm, one delay let to another. She is still waiting on her visa.
Administrative Processing caused by consular requests for Security Advisory Opinions (SAO) is trully a black hole, and is where delays may be counted in years.
SAO Administrative Processing can be triggered if the applicant's name is spelled similar to someone else's name, who is on a terrorist, criminal, or military watch list, or comes from a country commonly subject to AP delays, or is involved with High Tech, or is or has been a member of the Communist or a totalitarian party, or has family members who themselves might trigger any of the above causes.
A national of the following countries, may be commonly subject to SAO administrative processing: Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, or Yemen.
Remember, when applying for your Fiance or Spouse visa, EXACTLY how long it will take to get the visa is impossible to forecast. I can tell you estimates for AVERAGE processing times, but the exact time in your specific case, will be unique. Do refrain from purchasing air travel or making deposits until your visa has actually been received and checked for typos.

Administrative proccessing means = low priority? It has to be a high priority because we already have been at the embassy and got interviewed. They save much time by just printing the visa and then take another applicant. I'm not in rush, already live in a better country. Need to live there because of my family NOTHING ELSE!

Because you had your interview, that is why it should be THEIR "hi priority". Well, I don't think it works that way cause virtually everybody on AP have had their interviews too, and in the majority of such cases, the poor applicant seems to wait and wait. .Let's hope that in your case you have a better experience.

Hey visa coach! After the interview the consul game me a sheet that said: your visa has been conditionally approved and that was 2 weeks ago. Now when we check the status of the visa is in administrative processing. Why? We didn't miss any papers. And the interview was excellent.

any time the consulate is reviewing your case after the interview it is called Administrative Processing. Only thing for you to do is wait for the consulate to make their final decision and return your passport, hopefully with the visa inside. good luck

Hello, my fiancé had his interview on 3-26-2024 and the officer kept asking him has he been married before which he has never been married and kept replying no to the question which was asked to him 3 times. The Officer then gave him a 221g form n told him he will receive an email. They did not request any other documents. We haven’t received an email from them but I checked the status today and it says his case was sent back to NVC. We r very worried. We don’t know why it was sent back and we r afraid that he gets denied. Have u any idea why this could happen?

Hello Visa Coach, I had my Interview for the DS 260 i.e Immigrant visa, on the day of the interview, the Immigrant Visa was petitioned for my My Dad and two of his siblings as Principal applicants, My relatives got theirs at ease but our interview (my family) went either ways, and the worse part was that we all provided the same documents ( referring to my Dad and his siblings). So after the interview, we were asked to provide a whole lots of documents, and I quote according to the consular that interviewed us, she said the only way she can issue us a Visa is unless we provide the documents she listed, we submitted the documents and up until now we haven't gotten a reply, we tracked our visa status and found out we were placed on AP although we've been checking from time to time, there's always an update, my question is that, do we have to still exercise patience and wait or do something else, plus according to the letter addressed to us, we have to wait for 90days and if we don't get a reply, we should contact them the 90days is almost up, what do you advice we do

Hello, my I am American citizen, sponsored my husband, Feb, 15, 2018, he passed his interview, all paper work was correct. The officer wished him good luck in the United States, they took his passport..he didn't inform us it was going to be under administive processing, I don't even know if that's what is occurring, they didn't inform us of what is going on, and we can't contacted them in Paris France. The consular officer's recommendations are passed on to his supervisor. If the supervisor deems that further investigation is needed, then that is what happens, regardless of how positive the reviewing officers comments during the interview were,

Not knowing anything about your situation, I have no ideas what is causing your AP. A general explanation on AP is described at my video. Should your case be delayed for another few weeks, then you should contact the consulate to ask what is going on with your case.

my husband asked for his criminal information 3 days before his interview. when he went to the interview he spoke to a man.had his interview and everything was perfect. till a woman called his name and gave him all his paper work. she told him your papers have been completely stopped. when he came home I contacted the consulate in my country that said he was missing that document. but they started asking for many more things like marriage certificate, birth certificate and much more. it has been two months since he had his interview.i don't know what to do I have to go back and sturdy

Well, you need to provide the documents and evidences that the consulate asked for. Do it quickly and completely. Then wait for their decision. If denied contact me to resubmit the case.

Hi VisaCoach. Just had our interview last July 2, 2019. The interview went well and the consul has told us that me and my daughter's visa was approved. Hello Visa Coach. My fiancee, a Russian woman who is a legal alien working as a translator/interpreter for engineering firms and law enforcement in Seoul, South Korea, applied for a K1 visa in December last year. I myself am a commissioned officer in the US Army. She had her interview in early June and was told it would take about a week for her visa to be issued. They took her passport and all of her paperwork. It has now been over 70 days of administrative processing. They requested additional information in late June, which we had to them the next day, which they acknowledged. We have received little to no updates on her case. We contact the visa center often and I actually visited the embassy myself when I visited over the summer. The visa chief was unsure of why it was taking so long. As of now we are still told to just wait for administrative processing to conclude. Any ideas on why it would be taking so long?

Sorry, but AP takes as long as it takes. There is no standard resolution time. You will just have to wait for the results.

FBI does a background check on the American spouse, and you if you had visited the USA. The consulate will conduct their own background checks on you.

My fiance went in for her K1 interview on Sept 15. After the interview the consular officer gave back the passport and instructed her to mail back the petitioner's W2 forms and the passport together with the a form (I believe it was a (INA) 221(g)) by DHL express courier. This was done the following day. Just recently, I sent the Lagos consulate an email asking about the case status and have not received a response. What should I expect and do in this case? If you replied promptly, then waited a few weeks before chasing the consulate then you have done all that can be done while waiting on processing to be completed.

Hello Visa coach, I’m a US citizen and my fiancé had his interview on January 10 2021, he was put to administrative processing cus he didn’t have irs form from our sponsor his police clearance certificate and translated form of his military book, it took us just a week to bring all the documents to the embassy and submit them, I’m in his country with him right now I’m pregnant and don’t want to leave without him, it’s been 2 months since our case is in administrative processing the website says it should take 60 days or less for the case to be resolved but nothing is happening. Can visa still be denied even if everything is good with his documents and our relationship is legit? Cus hey I’m having a baby with him

Congratulations on the pregnancy. The answer to your question is, "it's not over till it's over" so regardless of what has gone before, approval is still not guaranteed, if the consulate, for whatever reason they find, decide not to approve, they might still deny. thats normal procedure to return your passport, cause it's a valuable document, and they have no idea how long you will take to submit the required documents, or even IF you actually will submit them. So they give passport back to you. Now the "ball is in your court" you get the missing documents and send them and the passport back when you are ready, or you you don't.

AP for those who did not have all documents ready on the day of the interview is not a high priority usually for the consulate. You may get your visa tomorrow, or it may take many weeks. Best advice (for those who WILL have interviews) is to make sure all documents are ready and brought to the interview. In your case the BEST you now can do is be patient, and allow the consulate to work at the pace they decide to work at. Should your visa not be ready after a month, a polite email to the consulate from your American sponsor, may help to remind the consulate about your pending case.

+Maricel Fran Administrative Processing just means the consulate is doing its admin work to clear a case. Your final missing document is now at the consulate. it is in some officers or clerks in-basket. As soon as he gets to your document he will take action. Unfortunately we don't know how full his in-basket is, so you have to simply wait, until the clerk gets to your case. If the final document is ok, then they print your visa, and return your passport to you. Next stop USA.

If you have used an attorney to file your case, you can ask him to contact the consulate on your behalf. Or your American sponsor can contact the consulate to inquire, or your American Sponsor can request her congressman to ask for an update. While a case update is a sign that someone is working on your case, it is not necessarily confirmation that someone is working on a specific email you have sent. The best way to learn if your email was received, is to send another email and ask for confirmation.

My interview was cleared and consular officer gave me approval that your visa is approved wait for 3-5 days to get your passport back for printing visa stamp nd visa packet , they take my passport . Now m waiting for my visa and passport for approximately 10days , m very upset then i track my passport it shows there is no available info about this passport no after that i also email the consular officer about my passport nd visa today i received email answer from them that Your visa application has been refused under Section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act for mandatory administrative processing. Unfortunately, we cannot expedite or give an estimated time frame. U.S. immigration law requires that additional steps be completed in some cases before they can be reconsidered for adjudicative review. We will contact you as soon as the processing of your case is complete. What should i do now ? Is it good or bad sign ? Or i should wait for next ?

That it takes a few extra days, or extra weeks, is not unusual. If you don't get your passport back after three weeks, then is time to contact the consulate. Before then, best is to excercise patience.

Is it possible that they put me in AP if the consulate lost my passport?. See, my previous visa was stamped on my passport and I went to renovate my visa, the guy who took my fingerprints and picture took my passport and told me they would send it back with my visa in one to three weeks, then I get a phone call the next day from the consulate asking where was my visa, and I told them it was stamped/printed on my passport that I left with them. Few days later I start checking my visa status online and it says "No Status". I called and they supposedly made a report, my status changed to "Ready" and stayed like that for 2-3 days and them in the morning I check my status and it says "Administrative Processing". I am very confused and angered, I provided all the information and documents needed, I can just guess the consulate lost both my passport and visa, and the customer service SUCKS, nobody seems to give me a concrete answer. Never has happened to me before, I've always had an NIV.

Administrative processing means the consulate is doing their work in the background. I can mean many things, even that your passport is lost, and they are looking for it. Hopefully your passport will be found and your visa issued without further delay.

Hi, I had my interview on December 5th, the consular did not ask many questions. She didn't even ask for any affidavit of support or any other documents beside the original marriage certificate and birth certificate. I also lived in UK for 6 years I provided them with the original police certificate. My spouse (petitioner) accompanied me to the interview. The consular told us everything looks good and there's nothing to worry about but she gave me a white sheet of paper with 221 (g) with no further documents needed. Now my case shows under administrative processing. I have no idea what's going any help would appreciated.

Always a possibility of a "problem". However, what you should do is be a bit more patient before getting concerned. Typically it takes about two BUSINESS weeks to get back your passport, you are less than half way to that point.

It means the consulate is doing further research on your background. When they have completed their inquiry's they will let you know their final decision.

An attorney is not able to do anything you have not already done, ie: "ask the consulate for status of the case". Usually you know at the time of the interview whether you have been approved or not. The consular officer tells you so. If you are still in doubt then you will have to wait to see what is inside your passport. As whether approved or denied your passport is returned to you.

If he is your husband and your cousin then you have always told the truth and the issue should be solved. If you told a falsehood, then now you have been found out. Ask your consultant or attorney to help you submit your proof to the consulate that you have always been truthful. Birth certificates and a family tree should do it.

Administrative processing takes as long as the consulate deems necessary. It could be weeks or months. YOu will need to be as patient as you can.

If they told him the visa is approved, then there is nothing to worry about. Administrative Processing means they are working on the case, etc. Probably they are short staffed during the holidays and it will take them longer to issue the visa then what the interviewing officer estimated. hard to be patient but that is what you must be.

Hello! Can you guide me? Just need to get information about my case for CR1. I had my interview last June 25 2019 and I was informed by the consular that all of my documents are good however he placed my application on hold (221g) due to 1 missing document which is my Japan Police Clearance. June 26 I went to Japan Embassy to request for police certificate and finally after 5 weeks it has been released. I was instructed to submit it through 2GO courier. August 02 I went to 2GO and submitted it together with my passport. I just want to know how long normally it will take to give me back my passport? hopefully with visa attached to it. @@Visacoach I see! Thanks for that information. You've been very helpful and accomodating to everyone. It's been 8 days now since I sent them my Japan Police Clearance along with my passport. I've checked the status of my CR1 Visa online (ceac) and the last update was on August 06 2019. Still on AP. I called the US Embassy Manila the same day of its latest update and the customer service agent told me that if there's no any updates within 2weeks they want me to call them back and then they will escalate the case and will send an email directly to the consular who was handling my case. I hope everything will be good as my husband is eager to find out the result of our application so that he can start looking for a cheap tickets for both of us. He is planning to come over here on october 2019 and pick me up going to US together.

It means that the consulate has some questions. You are to answer them in writing, then send to consulate. If the consulate is satisfied with your answers your visa should be issued. If not satisfied, your visa should be denied.

Sounds like your case was denied. The documents provided by the consulate should explain why. Typically 6 to 8 months later you will hear from USCIS to confirm the denial. You can wait for that or you can start immediately to reapply. Many couples have come to me AFTER their cases have been denied, for VisaCoach to help them reapply. In about 6 months your American Fiance will get a letter from USCIS, probably telling that the case has been denied. You can wait for the letter to start your reapplication, or you can start now without waiting for it. This time you should hire VisaCoach to help you. Yes, it will probably take a long time. I teach my clients to get their Police clearances in hand first, before scheduling the interview. that way in case the HK clearance is lost or delayed (which is the usual case) the couple won't suffer.

Hello visa coach,just need some help, I had my interview this month and I got a refused denied under 211 (g) and they send vac my passport with that 211 g paper nd they ask me to submit my police clearance in Bahrain,which hi already apply but my big problem is the police clearance took 3 months before they will release ' according to the manila cosulate of Bahrain, but my manila case is valid till May 15 2019, what should we do? +olga oliva I have never experienced a case where the passport is not returned. Perhaps you misunderstood what the consulate has advised you. Eventually you will get your passport returned to you, and a statement providing reasons for your denial. When a denied couple comes to me, I always have them tell me exactly what happened and all correspondences, as we will address and correct all issues when I help them apply the second time. THIS time with my help I expect them to get approved.

Good evening, my name is Zuzanna. I live in Poland but I've been studying one year in Portugal and now I'm still here. That's why I applied for visa here in the Embassy in Lisbon, I had appoinment 1st of August - it went well, I applied for B1/B2 visa - I'm going for a 4-weeks internship from my University form Poland. It starts 29.08, so soon. I brought with me all needed documents (including a letter of invitation from the Institute from Florida, but they didn't keep it). The same day, they sent me mail that document from my Employer are missing. I immedietaly sent this letter. Now my status went from Ready to AP. As I said, in three weeks I need to be in Florida. Now I can see that it's low priority... I'm totally broken now. My question is - do I have a chance that they will treat me kind of different because it is an internship in Emergency Crisis Management Center, not some tourist trip? Thank you in advance.

Yes, it is possible they may issue your visa soon. What you can do is wait a week from the time you sent in the last missing document. Then email and, remind them that your course starts soon, and ask politely if they can issue your visa. It does not hurt to ask. It always helps to be polite and reasonable.
