I was always baffled by two things: 1: Why the CSS Tennessee was designed the way she was so late in the war with the lessons of the last three years to draw from? Exposed steering chains along her deck, an underpowered engine and gun port slats designed in such a way where shots would almost certainly jam them. Buchanan knew of these flaws and was alarmed by them when she was delivered but very little was done to correct the issues. 2: Why the floating batteries(failed ironclads) Buchanan had were not towed to and then anchored off of Fort Morgan where they'd be most likely to be of use?
