Phillip Sear plays one of a set of 25 studies from 1866 by the German composer Adolf Jensen.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jensen (1837-79) was a Prussian composer of mainly songs and piano music, who died young of TB in Baden. He was an ardent fan of Wagner, and his piano music can broadly be characterised as an individual blend of the styles of Schumann and Wagner (the Wagner of the Siegfried-Idyll), and some of his works anticipate the early songs of Richard Strauss in their ecstatic writing. His 25 studies, from 1866, are described as 'preliminary studies for works of the new school'. The piano techniques explored in the studies are more those used by Beethoven and Schumann rather than those used by Liszt. The whole set is musically interesting, and is (I think) one of the few sets of shorter 19th century studies that could be successfully played in recital complete.
