Great video. If I may make a suggestion, get a dog whistle. From my own experience and for example, if you're on a long beach and she gets distracted by something she can get from 0 to 2 km away in about 5 seconds and with wind around she won't hear you. 2 toots on the whistle followed by a treat immediately after for a while should get her used to it, then try longer distances.
@missnancysdayoff11 ай бұрын
thanks you 🙏 That is a good idea and I actually have one which for some reason I don’t use! that is exactly what does happen, I wasn’t sure if the wind was just an excuse for having cloth ears but a whistle will definitely be a better idea, I will dig it out today.

It's incredibly brave of you Tori 😇 to adopt a rescue as the first dog you've ever had! The way you are with Nancy, you're such a good mum that it's difficult to believe that you haven't had a dog before. Have you had any other pets in the past? What prevented you from having a dog before? Yes I can imagine that the life of a greyhound is almost institutionalized. They're never going to go out and experience what normal dogs are able to. It is sad but you rightly point out the need to get them used to this new world slowly to allow them to build their confidence. You have done that really well by the looks of it, you have a very gentle way with Nancy that can only inspire confidence in her. It's all positive reinforcement which is brilliant to see 👍. Obviously you didn't let the stressful times freak you out and cause you to be abrupt or harsh. You see that with some dog owners when out walking they lose it when the dog is naughty and they speak so abruptly. What about Nancy's ability to socialize with other dogs? I don't know to what degree greyhounds are socialized. Also what about chasing birds, wild animals is that an issue? After all it must be instinct for them to do that, have you had any instances where Nancy has seen a rabbit and decided to give chase? 🐇 🐕 😯 The coastal path is a great place to walk a dog. Also like to give the Southwest Coastal Path Association a shout out. They organize monthly walks along the coastal path in various areas. A chance to get some fresh air, exercise and meet like-minded people. Wow you sound like you were previously really landlocked? Did you grow up in a city? It's interesting how there is a parallel between your life and Nancy's, your new found freedom and Nancy's. Do you see it like that?
@missnancysdayoff11 ай бұрын
Thank you! To be honest I never thought of it at all, I have never been drawn to buying a dog it makes me really sad to think of humans breeding huge numbers of new animals all the time that people pay thousands of pounds for, when there are also thousand of dogs and other animals waiting in kennels at shelters for someone to give them a home. So I always new I would get a rescue, and I have been drawn to greyhounds since I first saw one and then read about the racing industry. We alway had cats growing up in my family which I also love so I’ve spent time around animals, as an adult I was never in a position to be able to get a dog before in terms of space, time or money. It finally felt right the right time when I started looking for Nancy 😊 Institutionalised is a good word I agree. I am definitely only into positive reinforcement, I’m not saying I’ve never lost my temper with her and given her a tug on the lead, but I’m not someone who enjoys shouting or using force with animals, I think love is the best approach getting them to do something because they want to, not because they are scared of you. I often see people shouting at their dogs out and about and the dogs just ignore them anyway so it’s pointless 🤣 When we had stressful times I just blamed myself and had a cry, I never thought it was Nancys fault she’s a good girl ❤️ Socialising with other dogs, I’d say she was scared at first. I don’t think greyhounds get to see other dogs than greyhounds so it’s all a bit alarming. So walks were stressful at first when we would meet other dogs. She would freeze a lot, or occasionally bark and lunge. This was purely nervous aggression to try and make them go away, she’s never been actually aggressive to another animals, she has had a few other dogs go for her and she screams and tries to run away it’s super sad. It was unfortunate timing though as all the Covid stuff was happening so you weren’t supposed to go near other people and I came to realise that because I was standing back she thought the other animals might be a threat. These days I get down and say hello and pet any dog that comes up to show her it’s ok and that really helped, she is very good these days. She doesn’t love all other dogs I think she thinks they are beneath her sometimes but she mainly ignores them, she will growl if they keep bothering her but I think if they are being rude that is ok. She has become very playful and loves other dogs to chase around, sadly it’s hard to find friends sometimes 🥲 In terms of chasing wild animals I don’t think she is worse than any other breed of dog, probably better to be honest! Yes she has normal instincts to chase animals, and there is always a risk with any dog off the lead but luckily we have never had a problem I always try to manage the situation, if there was lots of animals around she’d be on her lead. I always stay vigilant to our surroundings looking out for animals or fences with barbed wire etc. She only chased a rabbit once really just for fun as she was nowhere near 😂 I see it as my responsibility to make sure she doesn’t chase anything to the best of my ability, and fingers crossed things carry on being good for us. I don’t want to underplay this because yes sighthounds can go a lot further a lot faster than other breeds of dog and they are big enough to inflict damage, but honestly most stories I hear about dogs catching wild animals involve other breeds. Sight hounds at least give up when they can’t see something rather than following a scent for miles! Those monthly walks sounds nice and it’s just such amazing scenery! No actually I am from Hampshire so farming country really! Grew up in a small town. The flat I lived in was above a shop in a village so we actually had access to beautiful quiet countryside and woodland right from the door, which meant we were never short of places to walk. It’s a fairly busy part of the world so lots of other people with dogs but you can usually get away from them if you try. Much quieter in Cornwall outside holiday season though. I guess our freedoms do parallel each other because I was only able to get her because I was working from home for myself which was pretty freeing, never looked at it that way before ☺️

@@missnancysdayoff Yes I totally agree with you. We should provide homes for all those animals first before ever considering breeding. I think social media and celebrities can negatively influence the pet ownership landscape by making certain breeds or crossbreeds particularly popular and unscrupulous breeders will then cash in. I volunteer in an animal shelter and because of this people often ask me for advice about getting a pet. A friend of mine asked me recently if I could suggest a breeder, and I was like really! 🤯 So it is hard to get the message out when people are bombarded with influencers and celebrities. That's why we need you Tori! Positive social media influencers.👍 Yes I love cats too, in fact at the animal shelter I am a cat socialiser so I spend time with traumatised cats to help them learn how to trust humans again. Cats are absolutely brilliant 😻. Would you describe yourself as a cat person or a dog person? Sorry that was a loaded question. People ask me that many times and I just say I love all animals, they're incredible. I can really feel your compassion and passion for Nancy and animals in general, it really comes across through in the way you write. When you mentioned sometimes stressful situation can make you cry I was sending you hugs through the ether 🤗. Dogs are so switched on to how you feel that I'm sure Nancy appreciates your effort, what you try to do. And you are really tuned in to what is going on in her psychology. You identified perfectly that her occasional lunging behavior is due to feeling anxious. My friend's dog has similar behavior traits and it's down to him not having self-confidence because he is a rescue and goodness only knows what kind of start in life he had. With time, patients and love he's going from strength of strength. But it takes a special kind of person to be able to do that, my friend is for her baby and clearly you are such a person for Nancy. You are right with covid humans and animals missed out on the social interaction and you importantly emphasized that our pets pick up on our own energy and will mimic that so when we were forced to distance ourselves from others then naturally our pets would do the same. And for puppies during that time they missed out on an awful lot of socialization. That's interesting about sighthounds, that they have bred to chase something they can see versus tracking an animal with their sense of smell. Besides the wild rabbits that I come across are just insanely quick and agile. And because of their small size it's so easy for them to pop into a bush or go underneath something. I think with Jack Russell's there is a greater chance for problems because obviously they're able to go down into borrows. I'm not familiar with Hampshire but from your description it does sound rather lovely. Do you see your family often? I noticed your sister has joined in a couple of videos, must be nice to share those experiences.. Forests are amazing. Have you ever tried forest bathing? It's a Japanese idea I think. Very relaxing and enjoyable. I tend to believe people and pets come into your life due to the interplay of energies, a sort of rich universal tapestry where one soul's journey is bound up with another and so on... 😊
@missnancysdayoff10 ай бұрын
@Melatiah you’re right and it’s really sad because if you want a pet, it shouldn’t matter what they look like. And that doesn’t even touch on breeding animals which physical defects etc because people like he way it looks it’s so disturbing. Thank you I’m really happy that our videos are coming over that way 🥰 I would love to volunteer at an animal shelter one day. Being a cat socialiser sounds pretty brilliant, although of course the fact there are all these traumatised cats is awful. Well I would say I’m a cat person really, I’ve had 4 cats and I’ve cat sat for lots of people and I feel I understand them pretty well. I love all animals but I’d never been around dogs much until a few years ago so I felt more uncomfortable, and as a child had experiences with dogs barking and jumping up that really scared me and put me off. I started hanging out with a friends lurchers a few years ago and started to feel more comfortable round then, started reading books about animal behaviour and dogs etc and greyhounds specifically before I got Nancy! And then with having her I have learnt so much that I understand other dogs a lot better too so I’m comfortable around them too now, and can see their behaviour is more based on fear or frustration than aggression usually. I do think greyhounds are pretty special though they are kind of like giant cats and what could be more perfect 😍 Yes I honestly think a greyhound is easier to manage! I’ve spoken to loads of people with terriers who can’t let them off the lead because they will follow a trail for miles! At least with a greyhound when the squirrel goes up a tree or rabbit down a hole they are done. Of course dogs all have different prey drives and there’s doubtless some of all breed including greyhounds that can’t really be trusted off the lead. Hampshire actually is really beautiful, there’s just a lot of people living there! I see my family quite often we are all pretty close, and at the moment my sister all the time which is fun and Miss Nancy loves it. Forest bathing sounds incredible, where are the good forest pools? Nancy definitely is the one for me, even though it’s not without it’s difficulties! But when I went to see her she kept putting her head on my shoulder and looking at me, and that was it 🥰

@@missnancysdayoff Absolutely! We have cases where owners have taken physical action to change the appearance of their dog so that it looks somehow more cool. 🤯 Is two graphic to talk about here I think but when I was first told what some of these little souls go through it made me feel quite queasy. I don't know why people can't just accept a dog for whatever they look like. Every dog has its charm, I enjoy seeing dogs with scruffy fur that looks like they've had a bad hair day it just makes me chuckle 🤭. But it's the natural style of their coat. Yes one day when it's right for you I imagine you would make an excellent volunteer at an animal shelter with your experience of both cats and now dogs. And your personality is perfectly suited to it. What I like is that cats don't wallow in self pity even if they've had a really awful start in life and have got just cause to play the victim because they are. But given food, water and plenty of love they absolutely transform. Then of course we get stray young mums who come to us pregnant so we get the joy of the mum giving birth and helping her to look after her young and seeing those kittens grow older and all that comes with it.😻 Is brilliant how you overcame your fear of dogs through early bad experiences and didn't let that colour your judgement about dogs for life. If you felt comfortable maybe that could be a good subject for a video? Where you talk through some of those early experiences and how they affected you and how you resolve that. I think those lived experiences are good for people to listen to because it may encourage them to overcome their fears. I really wish potential owners would do the sort of research you did into dog psychology, what it's like to care for these wonderful animals. The world needs more people like you Tori. I lived for a time on the boundary between Warwick and Leamington Spa but found that was to much. I don't think it's healthy for people to live in these density populated areas. And the way people go about their lives always stressed out, I imagine they have nothing but adrenaline and cortisol running through their veins. So unhealthy and contrary to what the human body and mind needs. 😂 I thought the same way, where is the water? But forest bathing is about the trees so no water required. Although that might put you off it's actually really good to do one of these workshops extremely relaxing and gives you an appreciation for the nature around and the important of trees. But on the subject of forested areas with secluded water pools one place you may enjoy exploring is Goss Moor nature reserve. It's a very large site, you can walk around there with Nancy without being interrupted. There are streams and pools dotted all over the place. Best enjoyed in spring and summer when the ground has a chance to dry out a bit. We have had a crazy amount of rain even by Cornwall standards. Yes I do think our fur-babies choose us rather than the other way around..
@missnancysdayoff10 ай бұрын
@Melatiah that sounds nuts and very upsetting. People should have to pass an exam to be allowed an animal! I love little scruffy dogs to be honest, even though Miss Nancy is obviously a silky seal a little rough scrappy dog is nice. Really getting to help the animals like that must be so rewarding. And kittens 🐱 wonderful. That’s a good idea thank you, I do want to share some more of my journey with Miss nancy working up to it! Forest bathing 🙈 whoops, ok I need to read about this clearly! 🤣 Thanks for the tip Goss Moor sounds really nice we will definitely check that out. I do end up missing different natural environments like woods and heath even though I am surrounding by incredibly beautiful scenery at the moment!

greyhounds can hear just fine, they just don't care about what you have to say until they're done with whatever they're doing :) miss nancy is certainly more well-behaved than any of my couch potatoes. i'm sure you've discovered that they are sensitive dogs with feelings that can be bruised with even one sharp word. a scolded greyhound will be so remorseful that they'll start listening to the cure and depeche mode. tori, take just a moment to compare miss nancy's previous life to what she's experiencing these days: when you got her, she only knew her kennel, the practice area, and the track. that was it. you are finally allowing her to live a REAL life, filled with adventures far FAR outside her whole life experience. you have not only saved her life, you have given her a chance to experience the real world by living a full life. it's no wonder that the two of you are so closely bonded together. thanks for another wonderful video.

Dogs are so wonderful. I currently have a Labradoodle rescued directly from a friend who couldn't give her the life she deserved so he gave her to me. She's mad as a box of frogs but very obedient and affectionate. It's definitely the behaviour of the owner that determines the overall behaviour of the dog I think. Treat them well and with respect and they'll do the same with everyone they meet. Out of interest, what are the extra bits you're adding to Nancy's dry food in the video? As a vegan myself I've often considered healthy plant based food for my dog but I can never come to a proper decision on what to give her. I'd have to alter it somewhat to suit my dog's size etc but I'd be interested in your thoughts on it.

Mad but obedient and affectionate sounds pretty great! I agree with that and it works for us humans too right ❤️ Her food, I kind of add whatever bits I have mainly because it looks super sad giving her just dried biscuits even if it is supposed to be everything she needs. I tried lots of different biccies I did used to feed her fish ones, but we have now settled on the Hownd vegan ones which seem to suit her just as well and also suit me better! In that dish was some pumpkin purée and a piece of crunchy Cornish fish. I often give her some banana, any bits of left over veg she love broccoli, a bit of potato or sweet potato, and I do sometimes add some fish also, or mashed up chickpeas, squishy strawberries or blueberries, she likes everything. In general terms in took her a few months to get used to the new biscuits as with most diet changes (her stomach that is) now it’s just as good as before and her droppings smell nowhere near as awful, she likes the biscuits just as much and looks every bit as shiny and muscly, she’s been having those ones about a year I think. I spent a long time researching and trying stuff to get something with a similar amount of protein and calories in so she’s having a similar quantity as with her old biscuits. sorry that when on it’s an interesting subject for me 🙈

@@missnancysdayoff It's all good. Thank you, I appreciate your in depth response as a dog's diet is not just some trivial afterthought. It has to be done right for the sake of their health and quality of life so taking the time to research and share your knowledge on it is important and shows how much you care. I'm in agreement that just the "complete" dry foods seem a bit sad. My dog will eat those without any problem but it doesn't feel quite right giving her just that every day so she gets some other stuff too. Some meat, some fish. As we all know by now dogs can thrive on a more varied diet so I'd like to cut back on those from an ethical point of view whilst still taking the best care of her that I can. She loves vegetables too so I'm sure she'd welcome the addition of some of those. Thanks again for taking the time to comment back. 😁

I have also come to the same conclusion that you have been hogging the limelight Miss Nancy actually is the star billing. I also feel the wardrobe budget is not being evenly distributed. So far I have seen miss Drew wearing the same collar and lead in every video with only two other changes of wardrobe, one yellow waterproof and one multi coloured body warmer. You by comparison sport several different costumes in one day, and never the same twice in each video (how many bikinis does a girl need?) I hope to see this inequality rectified in the future, even if one of you two has to resort to buying items from charity shops. How can a girl feel her best in the same old outfit whatever the seasons latest fashion trends. A new Spring Summer Autumn and Winter outfit should be the minimum at least. Make this your New Year resolution. Wishing both of you the very best for Christmas and new year and may your adventures continue. PS you don’t need to stop taking your clothes off and wearing bikinis just put more different clothes on Miss Nancy!!

😂 you’re right poor old Miss Nancy, I think Santa might be bringing her something new this Christmas! She usually just like to be nude herself, but she could definitely do some collar changes, I will see what I can do! Merry Christmas 🎄😅

Do greyhounds run off when taken off lead?
@missnancysdayoff11 ай бұрын
It maybe depends what you mean, if I take her to the beach she will run off down it then back again, pretty far maybe because they move so fast but she’s not trying to run away! Just having fun times 😍 If you had a newly adopted dog and let it off the lead maybe it would run away 😖

@@missnancysdayoff He's gorgeous yes. I've invested in a 20 foot extending lead and a 50 foot exercise lead, so he does OK. Be nice to let him off though... I live by a primary school and when he was about 18 months old he took off when I let him off and ended up in a classroom surrounded by adoring young children. I ran down the side of the main road and into the school to ask if anyone had seen him, just as a senior teacher was walking him back out and told me what had happened. When he's on a walk he's a bit like Tom in Tom and Jerry - always mischievous. 😁🤣

@@missnancysdayoff Bless - my dog's an absolute angel with people, thankfully. The other time I let him off, I was out jogging with him and I wanted to see if he'd follow me. Unfortunately being a hunter they have a massive prey drive. He seemed take about four hops and disappeared over a barbed wire fence. On closer observation I could see sheep a few hundred yards away. So I leapt over the fence after him. It was winter and the field was full of slippery mud, but I knew I had to get to him fast before a farmer saw him. By the time I reached him he'd collected his prey and forced it into a ditch ready for what came next. So I grabbed him and ran again through the slippery mud back to the barbed wire fence. Falling over a couple of times in the process. I then had to lift him over the barbed wire fence and he's quite a big heavy, thick-set dog. He hasn't been off the lead since and that was three years ago.🤣
