Hello, I am an adoptee from Korea. I love my adopted parents so much and would never consider them as anything but my parents. However, they failed to give me any connection to my heritage growing up, and I felt so lost for the entirety of my childhood and teenage years. I am just now coming to terms with my sense of self and roots at age 26, but I know of other adoptees who never found that even up into their 40s. Thank you for giving a fresh new life filled with opportunities to a child that needs it, and I hope you will continue to let their Korean identity remain a part of them.

Fellow Korean Adoptee here, and what Nabi said is exactly how I feel too. I love my adopted family and don’t think of them as any less than that. However, my parents took the view of “I don’t see you as Asian, I just see you as my child,”which is sweet and all but it’s ignoring the fact that the world saw me as Asian and how that shaped my experience/view of the world and myself. Nevertheless, I’m glad to see you went and visited to pick up your precious child! Good luck and wish for a happy, healthy child!

I’m Mexican, adopted by a Chinese American family, and I relate. They just brought me up on Chinese culture, which is beautiful of course, but I had no connection to my Mexican culture either. I’m only 15, but I am able to teach myself about it, but I still sometimes feel so lost about who I am, where I’m really from, etc.. and basically lost my whole identity. It sucks because I hear about it happening so often with international adoptions. My sister (non biological) who is 25, adopted a toddler from Mexico a few months ago, and thankfully she’s already gotten her Spanish lessons. I would’ve done anything to have that growing up. I still have plenty of time, tho. I’m sorry you went through the same thing.

Adopting a child is more than just giving them love and stability -- it is understanding that adoption starts with trauma and being torn away from native country, culture and bio family. Practically every adopters child will grow up with abandonment issues, wanting to racially fit in, desire to search for birth family, insecurity of looking different from their adoptive parents. They will need to be around fellow Koreans, be exposed to their native food, culture. They will always feel the pressure to "show appreciation" to their parents. The adoptive parents will have to try to understand racism and help the child when he confronts it. I hope you are well-prepared and educated for the journey ahead of you because you can give your child all the love you have, but they will need more. Thank you. Good luck.

Honestly, one of the nicest ‘gotcha’ videos I have seen. I loved how your daughter took to him and played straight away. You are clearly fantastic parents. The scene when you had said goodbye to his carers was heartbreaking. But when he took your hand and placed it back on his head, that was beautiful. He has got a truly wonderful family and I am sure he will grow to be a delightful young man, and be another blessing to your family.

Friends, adoption will break you. But ,it will heal you. It will crack your heart wide open. It will stitch you back together. There will be deep loss. There will be unimaginable joy. You will not be the same. Thank you for these beautiful word's and sharing your adoption journey. What a beautiful blessed moment. My Korean name is Seaun Young Lee and my adopted name is Cyntheinna Elizabeth Lee. I was adopted from South Korea in January 16th 1998. To a wonderful Christian family. Now I'm married with babies of my own. I'm thankful for you and your husband for adopting beautiful Benjamin what a beautiful little boy.. Congratulations and enjoy every moment and treasure every memories.. God bless you and your family 👪👪👪👪👪👪👪

Oh boy, that was the most emotional and loving transfer of a child that I have seen. The fact that they offered a prayer and that so many of those who have cared for your little man were visibly emotional was beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time. The caregivers have such a tough job when it comes to letting go, it's heartbreaking. I hope that you have provided updates for them so they can see his progress and that he is well taken care of and loved. International adoption is not for the faint of heart. Wishing you a wonderful holiday season.

Beautiful! Congrats! Adoption is a beautiful and amazing gift! Having gone through it twice, it’s really hard for the women who take care of them! My youngest was taken care of by a great lady and I’m so sad I couldn’t meet her, I did write a letter thanking her and assuring her he was loved and taken care of. I was told the morning we got him she was crying. Adoption has so many emotions but is so beautiful!

As a fellow adoptee, I believe home is where the heart is. You seem like amazing, loving, and caring parents. Perhaps Benjamin will be curious one day, as I was at 20. My mother embraced this and arranged for us to go back to Korea and meet my birth family. I have met other adoptees who don’t want to go back, and never felt a desire. Keep providing your love and support and all will be fine. Love begets love. Xo

I’m going to be real…as an adoptee it was so hard to watch a child being taken away from everything they know, the safety of the person who took care of them first. Adoption is traumatic. Its not always this beautiful story, it’s messy and the children who are adopted often will have to work through those messy hard experiences and feelings and all that I hope is that whoever does adopt makes sure to put in the extra work and love and make sure to let their child know where they came from, their history, and their culture. To be okay with them exploring it to.
