This was heart breaking. I'm adopted from Guatemala as well and I can't imagine the heart break these parents went through while waiting. Also the child. That feeling of being ripped apart from someone you have become attached to never gets easier. I hope he us having a good life now!!!!! 🇬🇹

As author of "Between Light and Shadow: A Guatemalan Girls' Journey through Adoption", I want to warn folks against judging this situation in black and white. Too often, the flawed Guatemalan adoption system is seen by American eyes through moral lenses. While writing "Between Light and Shadow" I met both women who had painstakingly given up their children of their own free will, and women who had been bribed, coerced and threatened to do so.

The child has a name already so why rename them? We are not pets and we might love our new name but don't hide it.

Your comment is bit confusing but I like it because I think I know what you mean

I’m Guatemalan and was named jack when adopted. But I was adopted at birth so it’s not as weird I guess. But I would be fine either way.

Some kids being adopted ask for a new name, this child was a baby when they started adoption so he wouldn't of known difference in name at that time. Outside of America a name change can be seen as good, a new start and can happen by culture and no adoption cases, In America Nation First People's can earn a new name,..... don't judge cultures you aren't educated in.

Kai Kong I see where he’s coming from. My original name sounds spanish and was Roberto as a first name. My name now of after I was adopted was John. And naturally my last name changed to a common white name or Irish decent. What I’m saying is my name now doesn’t sound anything like it was before. I don’t think about it often but when I do I think “hmmm I have a pretty white name I could have gone by Robert or somethen”
