In camera mono with filters plus increased contrast for some great effects. But you must know what color filters to use and their effect on certain colors. I used them all the time with film in the 70s. The in camera filters in combination with lens filters by b&w with their aluminum rings and high quality glass for even greater effects.

Well done. I think Silver Efex also has a Lightroom plug-in, as well the Photoshop plug-in shown here.

Surely when you say don't take in monochrome it is only the LCD image that is as RAW doesn't carry mono on import to LR

Was coming here to say the same thing. I love using the monochrome setting when shooting as it helps me compose with monochrome in mind. Once loaded to the computer, it's still just a RAW color image.

Surely shooting in RAW & JPEG gives you the ability to give a B&W preview whilst retaining the colour information within the RAW file data. That is the beauty of shooting in RAW (+jpeg if you like), as the colour data ins't disgarded as it would be when shooting in jpeg only with a B&W setting.

At 1:49 that shot reminded me of my college days and learning all about The Zone System :-) Great stuff. I'm surprised your not using a Nikon 14-24 2.8 with a Canon converter/adapter. That would really broaden the scope on those landscapes :-) Great video.

Thank you Doug loved what you did and understood every thing you said. I do have one question for: in your landscapes or working with Silver Efex Pro 2 I sometimes receive halos around the edges of the rocks when they meet the sky. Have you any tips on how to avoid the bane of my life halos and if you find you have got them after processing how would you remove them. Is there a simple and quick way. I do hope you can help Best regards, Allan

"Green and red look the same in B&W". Any decent RAW software will give you full control of the colour channels in post. That's one of the reasons why it's best to shoot B&W in colour, to retain the colour data.

My prefered BW camera definitly is not a Canon. I just do not like Canon sensors. The brand is actually not important (I only say that it is Swedish), but it usually works with an English sensor called Ilford FP4+ 120 (sometimes upgraded to the slightly more sensitive Ilford HP5+ 120). And although I love shooting BW with my Hasselbl... oops .... I sometimes think that high quality full frame DSLRs might give me a bit more options to create an image. Then on the other side I do not consider a file on a computer an image; it is only an image if it is lying in front of me on some nice paper and here digital is a problem again, for I have a nice old wet darkroom yet bigger prints from digital I would have to send out... No... I think, I'll stay with my camera, but not being a film snob I have to admit: I like Doug's images pretty much.

Speaking of irony... "Make sure you always shoot in RAW" ...followed later by... "Don't change to the monochrome setting, it makes your image flat" RAW saves the colors. Be not afraid of monochrome settings when shooting RAW.

2:17 what do you mean saying "1/3 into the scene"? I've never understood this rule. If the horizon is about 6 km away - do I have to focus on 2 km? That makes no sense, because either 2 and 6 km is the "infinity" for the camera.

it's the thirds grid (imaginary but you can turn on a preview on screen). the grid is on the same imaginary plane the 2D final image is, not the stones and earth in the scene.

RAW still saves all the colors even with monochrome setting active. Monochrome setting only affects jpg not RAW.

Just intrigued as to why you took the colour image into Photoshop then into Silver Efex, rather than just going direct into Silver Efex from Lightroom. Other than that, a great image and tutorial.

I guess if all your gear is Canon, Canon doesn't have a Super-Wide that can compete with the Nikon 14-24 2.8 :-) Now Tamron has a 15-30 2.8 VR that can compete with the Nikon 14-24.
