Honestly one of the most infectious musicians and guitarists I've ever watched play even on just video. He has such an abiding love of playing and absolute joy in his craft, it's hard not to smile watching him, let alone gawk at how ridiculously talented he is as a singer, composer, and player.

I saw this fellow play with his comrades in Woodstock ny a couple years ago and I was amazed at how Adrian has the energy of a happy teenager, it is unabashed Joy. Now I can see deeper into his process from this little interview. Thanks⚡️

Love this! I admire Mr Belew so much. And i certainly agree whole-heartedly with nearly everything he says. Except for the bits at 3:29 and 4:32 where he speaks about the lessened impact and value of music these days. And i would have agreed with him completely, until a few months ago, when i stumbled upon The Warning. They rock so hard, so good, so authentically, and with such an impact that their fanbase is growing very, very fast... There's still hope. PS: Who else can _almost_ hear Adrian say, at 3:29: "Well... First of all, i couldn't even _see_ his face..." 😉

I've been a huge fan of Adrian Belew since his Zappa days. Seen him numerous times live over the years, and he's always smiling & just plain having fun. Without realizing it I've kind of adopted his "love bubble" concept, and it really does make a difference. Hang out with fun, happy people. Ignore negativity, and share happiness & humor whenever possible. Life is much better this way. 😊

I've loved Adrian Belew since his early days and I've watched him play with Bowie and KC, he seems like a brilliant man full of positive energy who gives a beautifully simple and wise solution to making people happier. All you need is love - bubble.

Met Adrian at Park West in Chicago while he was in King Crimson. Extremely kind & spoke with him for 10 minutes before he went in for the sound check. I took a picture with him, too. Robert Fripp on the other hand had a CannotUnderstandNormalThinking attitude.

I’ve never met Adrian in person, but i’ve traded messages with him on several occasions and a close friend hung out with him at his home years ago. He is a truly decent person. He recently shared on social media that his beloved 14-year-old dog had passed away. My heart breaks for him.

Are you a whale? Because they navigate by singing. They don't know where they are without music, and they don't know where each other are without music. Never knew they could comment on KZbin though. I thought whales only spouted on the water. Maybe you're a Belewga whale.

I live my life in a love bubble, I've just never had a name for it. I had no idea Adrian and I had this in common, but having seen him live many times over the last 20 years and after hearing this, it's pretty evident that it's true. He has so much fun playing live and it's obvious. So happy he's my favorite guitarist and a part of my life.

It's a good policy Adrian has there. My wife does that and is much happier for it. I used to think she had an innate knack for it, but I realize I was slighting how even if she had a head start over others in that line of thinking, she took wherever she started and then added to it, working to attain the discipline to push away mentally the doubts, regrets, all that negative self-stuff ... because after you've rid your environment of negativity, even after you've ditched the smart phone, you still have your own mind. I have a different starting place but I too would like to cultivate that discipline, the discipline to say, I don't need to let these bad things into my physical or mental spaces, and I have the right and the power to exclude them - at least, far more power to do so than I thought.

The important corollary to this, I believe, is that what lies outside the love bubble is just that- an indistinguishable mass of stuff out there, not an object of hate and vitriol

Adrian raises some very valid points in this brief interview. Establishing healthy boundaries is crucial for maintaining some semblance of health and happiness, however, how is the concept of "The Love Bubble" different from the practice of Ostrich-ism, sticking one's head in the sand?

I think an important point people dont get here is there are two kinds of people: lovers and haters. When i see things i dont like, i rarely ever feel the need to go out of my way to hate on it, to express lots of negativity, i simply avoid it. I am a lover. I seek things that make me happy.

Another way of putting it: Your attention and your time are limited resources. It is costly to waste them. Treat them as valuable. Spend them on relationships and activities you really care about.

What he didn't explicitely say was that nasty people can and will intrude one's life and "Love Bubble", but we all have at least some control over how much they can disturb it. Adrian is a stoicist, more than he may have realized.

That's all well and good the love bubble but most of us aren't wealthy enough to have that. Most of us have to get up every day take public transport and deal with other human beings that we can not avoid with the love bubble that wealth grants you. We go to work and are further exposed to humans we don't like but can't avoid because we work with them and so on. Don't get me wrong I love Adrian Belew but he lives in a world where he is fortunate enough to be able to have this love bubble afforded to him by his wealth like all wealthy people. Unfortunately the vast majority of us don't have that luxury.

I agree with the concept but the problem is you create a love bubble and the things that you've ignored INTRUDE into your bubble. I can't very well go to the grocery store and pay 60% more than I did before and put that outside my "love bubble". I could ignore the people and causes that created it, but I'm going to have to face off against the price because I have no choice but to eat. I like the idea, but I'm thinking it's not really "realizable" because those in the "hate ambiance" intrude into your "love bubble", one way or another.

This guy is an idealist. Of course we all try to eliminate toxic people from our lives BUT sometimes we JUST CAN"T. Like at Thanksgiving, or a work meeting, or a church project. There's always going to be sucky people in our lives. It takes a GROWN UP to deal with it in a mature fashion. Running from them is not always an option. Duh!

I can agree with this, I think Adrian has always had a positive attitude about life though and I think some people are just wired like that too and it’s easier to maintain a love bubble when you have lived in your own bubble as he has for a long time. He’s just better with being able to block out the nasty people.

People who are not deeply affected by music are listening to the wrong music. I don't mean this as a criticism but a suggestion that by exploring different genres of music ,there might be music that does move you deeply.

It’s funny how he mentions that it’s hard to find new creative stuff and everything seems to be the same old, same old when he’s just spent the last few years playing in bands that resurrect music he was part of in the past, talk about ironic.

That's smart. Ignore the facts if they don't make you happy. And if something affects you, then spout off opinions about facts that you have long ignored. Perfect path to peopledom. Respect where it's due, however. Zappa did pay attention. Got pissed off, and doubtlessly had stressful times as a result. But the man had depth of passion that doesn't come easily with willful ignorance.

And what of Social Responsibility Mr. Belew? Sometimes we need to engage in things and with people who do NOT make us happy. Finding balance is the challenge, particularly when it's difficult and uncomfortable, but we know it's the right thing to do and, rather than avoid it, we CHOOSE to do it anyway.

The problem with social media is its far too easy to get close to people who you really dont need to and who arent doing you (or anybody else possibly) any good what so ever. Yes we need to get along with people we disagree with sometimes. Thats not what theyre talking about. People on the internet at times have become insane. Theres a difference between friends who can have fun together despite disagreements (of which I have many) and the pointless shouting matches some people have over trivial stupid shit.
