I think with the camera technology of today, TG Maverick could have been a bit more realistic. If you'd aim a zoom lens up on the lift vector and simulate a 1-circle for just the movie, you would be able to see the opponent, they are not that far that you would not see them on big screen with zoom lens. Getting the shot would still be a challenge, especially when you know they only had one Hornet. He would have to fight the L-39 Cinejet in that case. It's just not what Hollywood wants anyway, but would have been awesome. BTW, there is way more CGI in TG Maverick that you would think guys.

in DCS its usually a turkey shoot because the SAMs havent been properly set up, and they dont adapt to enemy fighters, they only turn on and shoot at them. IRL they shoot, move, turn on and off radars, listen into flight's comms, and much more to be as annoying as possible to SEAD pilots. Read the book it was inspired by (Viper Pilot) if you'd like a better look into it, its a fantastic read. You can spice up your SEAD missions by adding some interesting components like SAM nets instead of sites, and short range radar, optical, and IR guided SAMs/AAA supporting the longer range ones. Throw in an SA10 or 15 if you want an extra challenge, as they will consistently intercept your weapons, and you must figure out a way around that. A properly set up SAM net or IADS (integrated air defense system) can be quite a challenge instead of a turkey shoot in DCS. Happy hunting.

Ok SEAD and DEAD missions are, by far, my favorite aspect of modern military aviation and the fact you represented a real world style tag team approach is phenomenal. The bomb plane that’s the ‘bait’, force the radars on and searching. The HARM plane to destroy the high power long range radars while the ‘Bait’ does whatever he can to stay airborne and then the cleanup aircraft that will eliminate remaining medium or short range emplacements. Also i love the detail of having an F-15C CAP group on the map and, what looks like, an Electronic Warfare aircraft in trail (it was blurred but I’m sure I saw an E/A) making it feel like we were watching an actual operation

Young man. I’m just a retired US Army Infantryman, 26 years of service and in two wars. At about 6 years into my career as an 11H, I applied to be a helicopter pilot (WOFT) but circumstance changed the path. In the Army we like to have helo pilots with tactical experience since they’ll be supporting forward elements and they know how to better survive on the battlefield, we know how various enemy weapon systems function and how to exploit weaknesses. When the pilot has to speak with Infantrymen in a hot environment, he knows exactly what they mean so there’s no confusion. As an Apache pilot, he knows the enemy will look to take him out before other helos since he can do the most damage to them. To evade enemy radar or to mask noise, the helo pilot will fly Nap Of the Earth or below it like when he follows a river and is flying only a few feet off the ground at max speed (around 175 mph). Often we’ll use a decoy helicopter flight (group of aircraft) that’s flying in the same area but a little higher to help mask the sounds of helos flying NOE. Those decoy flights will also do a few “false insertions” to make the enemy think we dismounted troops at a specific locations while our original Drop Zone is elsewhere. We’ll have other assets deployed to the false DZ to further sell the deception to the enemy to get him to deploy valuable forces to that area. This creates a couple advantages, one is that we successfully gathered our enemy forces in one location which allows us to bomb them to the Stone Age with B-52’s not far away waiting for the call to stop orbiting and make their run. As Light Infantry, we survive by being creative and don’t assume anything. We rely heavily on camouflage and disciplined movement. We don’t choose the path to walk on, we make our own trail as much as possible depending on how much time we have. So all those little details are going through the minds of our helicopter pilots minds as they fly. If an Apache gets ‘painted’ by enemy anti-aircraft systems both ground or air based, it triggers the pilot into best options for a response. He can evade by diving low to sub-NOE, he can try to evade with chaff/flares, call for support from other helos where the weapon is and request immediate suppression from artillery/mortar support, other AH-64’s, assistance from Air Force aircraft with any jamming capabilities or if they can hit the location with HARM missiles or, if a jet can take on the fighter that is pursuing the helo. In my job, I use the TOW missile system with a max range of 4,000 meters. I can take out slower moving aircraft and helicopters so the Apache pilot could fly closer to my sector, call me on the radio and request help from a pursuing group of enemy helicopters and I’d give him a heading and distance until I can assist. We have ground based air defense systems but if a battle is swamped with targets it’s not so easy, especially in a mountainous terrain. I’ll stop there for now, you get the idea of how a raid/attack would look like and how the enemy will usually respond. I served 6 years in D Co. 2/502 INF, 101st ABN. The average IQ of an Infantryman is 120 today so never assume an Infantryman is dumb, he’s likely the smartest one in the room. I mentioned all this in event you ever dream up a scenario for using both air and land based elements. I’ve seen A-10’s do amazing things that you wouldn’t believe, one saved my life.

Real life civilian pilot for over 10 years so I can't speak to combat but as for emergencies and stressful situations...I've had a few. Had a flight in an aircraft in solid IFR with an avionics and engine issue (violent and uncommanded pitch inputs from the autopilot, engine surging) in a new airplane. Turned out both were new issues with that model that were later remedied. Resulted in an approach to minimums that was hand flown while watching the engine instruments like a hawk. Nearly had to go around. I've had other flights involving busy airspace at uncontrolled fields where I was scanning like I was in a dogfight. Anyways what blew me away when I started playing DCS a couple of years ago is on intense missions it got my heart pumping and my palms sweating like those situations. I walked away with a level of mental exhaustion that reminded me of those tense flights as well. This video summarizes the feeling well. Beautifully put together. Keep it up.
