As a mental health therapist, at times I work with clients who are in "polyamorous/open" relationships and are supposedly fine with it. When we get to work on the reasons they've entered therapy, it's without fail trust issues and jealousy in the relationship. I simply remind the client that it is not the fault of their partner, but rather it's their fault that they cannot trust them. I then explain that if they expect to resolve their issues with the relationship all the while remaining in said relationship, I'm not going to work with them. They really don't get (or refuse to acknowledge) how simple of a fix it is. Unfortunately we've normalized mental health to the point that the vast majority of people want a diagnosis, a mental health disorder, medication, etc. They want a label. They want an excuse for their poor behaviors and decisions. Personal responsibility and integrity have fallen by the wayside.

Really great last point you made there, it's definitely something that you don't hear people bring up. "Mental health" being so ubiquitous nowadays, makes it much easier for some people to abuse it to get undeserved goodwill from others, and use it as a scapegoat for being irresponsible. They feel it's easier to remain a powerless victim to get along in life rather than wanting to become a better person by taking accountability for their actions. There needs to be a healthier balance between not feeling demonized as a person with a legitimate mental illness and also holding yourself accountable for how you behave.
