In case you were wondering about the context of that Mr. Bean clip, he was eying the woman’s shower drain because his apartment ran out of water and he was intending on siphoning the neighbor’s water for his own bath - which ends up backfiring when she switches to pink hair dye and ends up turning himself pink in the process.

Adult jokes in cartoons feels like a tradition when it comes to animators aren't shying away on getting their hands dirty by sneaking up on the questionable stuff that kids don't understand until they get older. I'm glad that Nickelodeon's Big Nate lived up the tradition thanks to all the memes.

"What would work with Twilight?" That's actually part of the joke. Right after the cutoff point, Spike says 'Twilight Sparkle! I can't even work with that.' Also there was a second, subtler adult joke in that clip. Spike's joke name for Applejack was Appletini, as in an apple martini. It sounds like 'Apple-teeny' which makes it something kids can laugh at too, but Applejack is the name of a specially made, super concentrated hard apple cider, and Applejack was shrunken down to the size of a mouse in that clip.

So I wanted to share something that is pretty important.... cartoons from before 1950s were primarily intended for adults. It's the reason why old cartoons, such as Looney Toons, has more sexualized and adult oriented jokes. Even cartoons up to the 70s were more adult oriented. It wasn't until the fact that cartoons became a marketing point for selling toys or other products that the view of cartoons were associated with children, which that ideology still exist to this day. I mean, how many times have we were watching an animated show/movie, like Akira or Graves of the Firefly, to immediately get a "that is for kids" response....
@matityaloran9157 Жыл бұрын
What’s also true is that the Hayes Code limited what could be in there at the time and in the 1950s they started to air cartoons on Saturday Mornings which led to the association
@frankkennedy6388 Жыл бұрын
But why? Wouldn't the majority of viewers turn out to be children anyway? I feel like they would have noticed that.
@matityaloran9157 Жыл бұрын
@@frankkennedy6388 I can actually explain that. Since before 1937 animated feature films were practically non-existent and animated television wasn’t a thing. Back then, pretty much every cartoon was an animated short film preceding a movie and movies were seldom shown in cinemas before 9:00 P.M. such that small children were seldom actually watching cartoons at the time (for the same reason they weren’t watching most movies at the time). The Hayes Code eventually limited what could be shown on screen across the board (because people did sometimes bring their families and children to watch movies) but it didn’t just apply to cartoons. In the 1950s, the animated short films of yesteryear were repackaged for television and come the 60s (if I recall correctly) they realized that children were the ones who most liked cartoons so they re-oriented themselves towards children and became more merchandise driven. But even then that wasn’t universal since the Flinstones aired in the 60s and was on prime time television (8:00 PM to 10:00 PM) which tended to be targeted primarily (though not exclusively) at adult audiences. And shortly thereafter The Jetsons also aired on PrimeTime television.

5:35 actually that episode that clip comes from has a few sexual innuendos and overall paints amethyst as a rather creepy person. the plot is that while cleaning up an his garage, they find an old dvd set of a show steven's dad and amethyst were obsessed with and immediately fall back into old behaviours. when the others later find out, pearl comments how the two of them would constantly sneak away to watch the show together (potential innuendo of them sneaking of together to do other things) and its made very clear that amethyst has some kind of thing for greg, and when he turns her down, she even goes so far as to psychological torture him by turning herself into his son, himself and even his dead wife to try and get him to stay, all while proclaiming "i bet you would have stayed for her". yeah, that episode was weird.
@jericaneely949 Жыл бұрын
I thought it was about how they used the show to cope with roses passing and then fell back into the routine of using it to cope. I don't think amethyst had feelings for Greg but wanted to be friends cause she grew her hair out to look like Greg's and introduced her to a lot of human stuff.
@IISheireenII Жыл бұрын
I thought, because Greg said something like "I can't do this again" after Amethyst turned into Rose, that it was quite obvious she used to pretend beeing Rose and he pretended it to be true to cope with her loss in a very very unhealthy way, most likely involving sex. A bit like when someone loses his wife and then hooks up with her sister for comfort because it is the closest substitude available. That was the inplication I think. Extremly unhealthy for everyone involved, but happens from time to time.

Amethyst certainly seems like the type to barge into a room Greg's in while he's indecent, pay it no mind even as he's most likely freaking out, and leave shrugging after she got what she was looking for or he shooed her back out the door. That and considering how Peridot adjusted, it's rather easily assumed that the crystal gems didn't really have much insight on the more personal aspects of humans before meeting Greg.

I think this is generally a good thing. The advantage of "family entertainment" (which is to say making shows to have content for all age ranges) is that at least parents and their children have both watched it. There are some problems with the more modern idea that everybody has their own screen and own shows, and most of those problems are in shows meant only for children - and sometimes even when those themselves aren't problems, lack of awareness of them creates actual problems.
