The kids' reaction in their rooms is even worse than being scared or shocked - they're trying so hard to ignore her because they're so used to it. Distance and unavailability to them is a defense mechanism. Assuming this video is really a metaphor for drug addiction or failed psychopharmacotherapy (or both), it probably kills her that even when she's lucid, her kids are barely there to return to because she's so wholly destroyed their trust in her.

Personal interpretation: The mother/Donna is struggling with addiction, likely to some kind of amphetamine (like Dexedrine or Adderall). She tells everyone it's just an allergy medication though and it helps her. It's somewhat implied her husband left her or she may even be a widow (she talks about seeing a new guy at one point) so she may have started taking the drug as a way to cope. The version of her that gets attacked and ran over is her real self, the woman struggling to keep it together. The "Evil Donna" is her having succumbed to amphetamine psychosis and the version of her that is abusive to her children (and possibly kills them too). The ravaged, sickly looking Donna who calls on the phone is her psyche/sanity, trying to snap her out of her psychosis (but is unsuccessful in doing so). She's sick and damaged from all the drug abuse (hence why she has trouble using the phone and reaching out). The ending is Donna after a bender and coming down, having done something horrible to her children (most likely killed them). The police have arrived to arrest her and she keeps telling them she doesn't have a gun, possibly as a way to maintain innocence. Ultimately, Donna has succumbed to her addiction and lost her mind. This is just what I, personally, took away from it, but maybe it might help shed some light for anyone confused.

@ajromero3692 Жыл бұрын
@@azsxdc242 I don't think Benadryl would cause anything like this though. I do agree what you say about innocent, socially acceptable drugs can be dangerous though. That's why I mentioned Adderall and Dexedrine, they're both doctor prescribed drugs used to treat actual conditions but are frequently abused by people who don't have those conditions. They're not far off from crystal meth in terms of chemical structure. It's the same with opiate based painkillers. They're legitimate medications that some people actually need but they're also widely abused because they're in the same drug class as heroin. Prescription medications are also widely misused by suburban housewives which the main character, Donna, is. Often times, they're prescribed these medications legitimately but end up getting hooked on them. That's what I took away from this short film. We often think of drug addicts as being lowlives from the dregs of society but many of them are, in fact, normal people from all walks of life. Anyone can become an addict and succumb to the ill effects these drugs can have.

If I'm understanding this right, this entire story is about drug abuse. The main character is the person using drugs, represented by the Clarindryl, and he doppelganger or her double is what she becomes when she overuses the drugs: The main character is her ideal self, what she wants to be with the drugs, and the double is what she actually is. What I don't understand is stuff like the sweater on the road, the image of the double shooting the chairs... I get the stuff with the kids, but everything else kind of lost me.
@sweetcloud12010 ай бұрын
i have a somewhat broken theory for the chair thing. in one of the parts where she freaks out, she starts talking to the wall about a guy she met who was "awesome". there are 4 chairs, representing her, her daughter, her son and maybe that man. she probably did something to him while being drugged. or maybe the chair she "shoots" is the version of her without being on claridryl, another symbol of how much her drugged version has taken over her life and somehow replaced her.

I didn’t think it was about addiction, or at least to me it wasn’t about addiction. More of mental health, what we perceive as the perfect life (like a generic pill commercial) and how the stress of achieving it/being perfect can be overwhelming cause perfect lives don’t exist,, instant gratification as if problems simply go away with 1 answer and breaking the mundane cycle … all the side effects were understatements, maybe her mind lessening the situation. “Extreme cases of gambling and sexual urges” (paraphrasing) She didn’t do any gambling, she went straight for her sadism/bloodlust by jumping through a window. Maybe sometimes we should give ourselves time to breathe as oppose to just bearing through or breaking. Bearing - the level to which something bad can be tolerated. Good art usually has many ways to be perceived tho. Done lots of drugs and never harmed a fly. Stress tho, asking for a psychosis.

So my hypothesis is this: The mother had chronic headaches or nasal congestion because she was stressed out from taking care of her kids (stress can make it easier for us to become sick). So she resorts to a medication to levitate her pains, and it works. She starts to use it often, seeing as it works, and for a moment she begins to feel like herself again. That is, until the side effects where in. Suddenly she is grasped with an addiction to a medication feeding into hallucinogenic, psychotic episodes. Eventually she snaps and murders her kids, doing so almost in a haze. She flees, runs into on coming traffic, and gets hit by a car: thus causing her to recap her life through a distorted, crazed lense. In the end, she’s just trying to get back home, but the cops have caught up with her. The parts where she seemingly fights herself can be represented as her inner struggle of fighting her addiction and mania.

Claridryl just clones you, as the mother says "having to be in two places at once". Acts immediately, lasts indefinitely, which is why a clone shows up just ahead . Suicide is mentioned widely in the small letters because it's literally clones of you wanting to kill you. The murder scene she drives by at the start is a clone having killed the original or vice versa (notice how they have the same shoes, both the screaming guy and the one in the black bag). I can’t believe I just now realized that there’s a bunch of empty prescription drug boxes in the back seats where her kids should be while she’s driving home. And seconds later she first encounters the clone of herself. Definitely symbolic of how substance abuse literally takes over your entire life by taking up more of your thoughts/time than those you care about the most and it becomes a constant battle with the worst parts of yourself to keep your head above water. It’s extremely dark stuff, but I actually see a slight positive in the fact that the mother didn’t completely succumb to her bad side. She survived and she painfully dragged her way back to at least acknowledging that she needs to try to be there for her kids by making it home. However, I’ve seen theories that the flashing lights at the end possibly represent a seizure and I honestly agree. If the writers intended for that to mean she overdosed in the end I think that could be a hint to the idea that if you wait too long or let yourself fall too deep into something dangerous it might be too late to make that comeback. Receiving help as fast as possible is the best way to ensure your recovery. Another thing that I saw in the fact that they made the mother drag her way home was that we need to stop this generalization that people with addictions of any kind are “lazy” or “losers”. In many cases they are people with mental illnesses that aren’t being treated properly if at all who are constantly fighting just to get by every day. They need our support and access to affordable (or even hear me out, free) mental healthcare, a cold shoulder only pushes them deeper. As someone who went through a very similar struggle to this lady: don’t be afraid to reach out to someone you can trust! If they brush you off they don’t deserve you. Anyone who reads this deserves to be surrounded with love and a support system they can rely on. Hang in there y’all🥰

The difference here is that Donna's addiction didn't kill her before the cops got there so she has to live with the fact that her addiction destroyed (and likely killed) her family.

What a great and visceral allegory for drug addiction. Especially the disclaimers of “use of the drug can encourage abstinence from the drug” and then later “use of the drug is needed to treat the symptoms of the drug”. Meaning using the drug and experiencing the negative results can begin to encourage cessation of use. But ultimately you don’t stop, and continued use is needed to feel normal and combat withdrawal.

But ultimately it appears she really isn't in two places. The guy raving at the beginning of her drive is another user who hurt his family, and the cops are traumatized. Then she does the same. Her coming to on her steps is really her coming to herself after being under the influence and cops are coming because she has done something horrible. I don't think there is genuinely two of her. The injured version is her real self while her body under the influence does something horrible. Potentially the blood isn't her own as the cops arrive to her bloodied on her door step.

In the scene where she "pretends" shooting the chairs with her hand and the final one falls at 8:44, is actually her, playing Russian Roulette with her children seated on the chairs randomly and killing one with an actual gun. I presume that one is Donna. And that's why she says "I don't have a gun" to the police in the final scene. "An increase in sexual and gambling urges has been reported in moms undergoing a taking of Claridryl." That is dark...
@joshuar95604 жыл бұрын

Wow. This video is very terrifying for me for many reasons. First, it is really unexpected that the video will eventually be a horror short. Second, even not so long after the ''ad'' starts, something feels wrong because the countdown of the ad is going up instead of down, and the supposed allergy medication that she is showing has nothing to do with what she's talking about and doesn't fit the context of the ad. I just felt this uneasiness right at the beginning. Then afterwards it just turns into this psychologic horror, and i love it. It also sends a very important message, and i think everyone should see this video. Anybody can struggle with drug addiction, and the impact on children can be long-lasting. Also another creepy detail is that you can actually see the abusive Donna in the background at 1:01. I also found the writings at the bottom of the screen still informing about the effects of Claridryl all throughout the video to be creepy. This video is truly a masterpiece and congratulations to everyone who worked on it, it has been a very long time since a film has disturbed me this badly. I loved it, but i can't imagine those who saw it on TV at night... i would have been sooo scared haha
