Do you have any videos to help with receptive skills or do you know of any good videos for developing receptive skills? If you don't use it you can lose it. At least the receptive skills can decline. I've not been around the Deaf community in a long while due to COVID then moving to a new state. I need to redevelop my receptive skills.

I have a new site to add to my list. It's not easy finding quality ASL videos. But not only do you actually know what you're doing 25 CL off forehead (duh) you're a CODA, but your signs are clear and easy to understand. As I'm sure you know not everyone is. A lot of sloppy/lazy signers out there.

Interesting. I'm hearing and I always thought these were just part of ASL. But then again I've signed my whole life so perhaps I didn't realize they were "slang". They were just something I done. There were maybe two or three that were new to me but otherwise I just thought they were part of ASL. Great video!

So true... As a CODA, I always thought they were just ASL until I became older realizing I struggled with what the English word was for it... then I realized.. "its a Deaf thing!". Always fun to teach and share. :)

Thank you for showing the ASL Slang and I use your video for my ASL Social Group since I am Deaf and monitoring the Zoom chats! May I give you an advice about the three ASL Slang - stick-mind, mind-absorb, put thought in mind and put thought in back of mind? I noticed hearing students are confused and I tried to explained to the best I can. Perhaps it is better not to put three of them together? Just a suggestion. Good job and keep it up!

Thank you for the tip. ASL Slang in general can definitely become confusing since one would have to expand and elaborate on each translation, context. Glad you are sharing this cool stuff. Love your videos- Even though live with fiancée (deaf) most sign learned myself... One suggestion is to slow down. Since you CODA and sign is 1st language that connection hardwired in you. I am better at sign than reading sign. That my biggest challenge. Also I learn from speech class when people speak in public they tend to talk fast. Slowing down will help people learn better.

Totally ready to start learning more than just cursory ASL, and already starting to absorb some of the inflections and shifts that fluent/native signers have. It's hard for me to believe that none of this was in my brain at the start of last fall, and that my first attempts at learning ASL was more like the flat-o sliding off my forehead and falling off, or even being flung over my shoulder and landing somewhere on the ground. Also no longer feel that I'm juggling all the words in my head to keep from forgetting them, and can now string signs together to say anything, and that every day exposure to sign is reinforcing what I've already learned. It's pretty amazing and I'm totally ready for the next step~~

Love that you are climbing high and quick with ASL! On my page, I have a "Deaf Culture" playlist. Watch some of those to help with "receptive" as well as Deaf culture awareness. I also have a playlist in the advance ASL called "Songs for Poems and Songs" here is the part 1 of 5 videos. As an ASL Teacher I try to find a way to help my students associate the sign with an image. Many signs are iconic but not all so you have to be creative but it can help with recall. The last thing to develop in most students is usually the receptive skills. I've only had one student that his receptive skills developed just as quickly as his expressive which was amazing to see. Anyway, lots and lots of practice with different people so you can see the various signing styles and accents.

One more thing, when fingerspelling don't bounce your hand as I'm sure you've probably already been told in ASL 1, but also when reading fingerspelling don't read it letter by letter. This will trip you up every time as you'll miss one or get stuck on one letter then you've lost the rest of the word. Sound it out. Both as you are fingerspelling as well as when you are reading fingerspelling. Eventually it'll become automatic like when you read a written word, you see the word as a whole instead of letter by letter. I know I'm not her but I couldn't help myself. It's the teacher in me. 😊 But I think I've found a new site to show to friends who are wanting to learn but I'm not close by to help.

If you prefer a more immersion method, hitting the mute button gives you that opportunity. Many ASL learners are auditory learners, this helps them. Thank you for the comment and suggestion

You’re trying to learn the best way possible. ;) I have some learners who are learning that are legally blind so I had been cropping my videos up close, but- they got iPads so are now able to zoom in, and I no longer need to do so… work in progress. Sorry about that! I know, it is was only so easy as to "how to make it engaging, fun and not distracting". The cool thing about this, is the best way to learn ASL is in a voices off space. If I may suggest, hit the mute button, its great not only for learning new signs and concepts but for your receptive skills. Cheers! :)
