I love the way you reference the fingers being curved, curved, curved! Mr. Galamian always said that the fingers of the bow hand were like the springs of a car-they need to work the same way or you're going to have a very rough ride! Those of us who've experienced this really understand what he meant!

I need this so much. I didn't get to learn the bow hold in my 1st violin lesson (don't know if it's because it's a 30mins lesson so he is rushing)and I was so confused about how to hold it and didn't know if I'm practicing basic rythm in the correct form. Thank you for walking me through the bow hold!

Hi Vicky, 30 minutes goes by so fast, it is hard to fit everything in. If you think you have a good teacher, be patient. Practice what he teaches you in each lesson. If you have questions that he hasn't answered, ASK THEM AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR LESSON so he can make time for it. If you think you have a bad teacher, you can find GREAT teachers on the Suzuki Association's "Find-a-Teacher" feature on their website. But give your teacher a shot, and don't hesitate to ask questions, and tell him what you want and need. Good luck!

Hi Brooke, Sorry to be so slow. I got behind on comments! So, you can purchase REAL violin bow foam, called "VIO-TECH" foam. It is expensive. Or, you can go to an office supply store and purchase pencil foams. That's what the blue thing is. I had to use a tiny bit of olive oil to get it over my leather because I had thick cow-hide underneath. Honestly, the Viotech is superior. And it's only like $14 for 2 pieces. But the foam wears out and needs replaced yearly. Show me your vibrato some day!

Debbie, I just really like a nice fat cushion. It really helps my bow hand to stay relaxed. I usually request "cowhide" on my bows because it is thicker than lizard skin....but my thumb nail keeps gouging out a hole in the cowhide, so the foam covers up the gouge spot, plus gives me extra cushion.

The best stuff is called "VioTech foam" from Johnson Strings. But you can make those foam pencil guards work with a little coaxing.

That's a pretty good idea! I think for the average hand, the anchor point I named (end of the ebony) is a pretty good target....unless a student has to STRETCH to reach that. I find the most common problem is that students are stretching BEYOND that spot....and it makes their pinky go straight and rigid. But yeah, main thing is: stay bent, stay relaxed!

The discussion about the pinky is naturally resolved by the length of the students pinky. When it is too long it wont work anyways. When the pinky it relatively short compared to the other fingers it is much more „natural“ to use your preference. Also I am not convinced that the axis your proposing is that useful for the required dexterity on the violin. All comes down to the shape of the hand.
