What a great guest! He openly talks about his thoughts during the process, making for really good interaction between you two. Rotimi‘s complex thinking offers real insight into what moves us climbers during projects. Would love to see him more often.

The side-by-side view at 21:54 together with the text on the key differences might be the best thing ive ever come across in a coaching video. I dont know how much effort the editing takes for this style, but i would absolutely love it if this comes more often in coaching-style videos. Its truly fantastic to see. Great video!

@21:49 was a golden moment. "no not quicker with the hands, Earlier with the hands." That TIMING component sometimes gets translated as being faster.....but ON TIME is way smoother than trying to be fast. And another FREAKING GEM at @23:17 such good logic.

What is super inspirational to me is how Rotimi is smiling after the session. One way of seeing this session would be 'oh, I couldn't send anything today' which is how I usually feel. But you can tell he feels clear and tangible progress in the session and feels better about himself and his climbing after the session. It takes a true coach to make the student feel that way. Some teachers can make you feel pretty sh*tty even if you've sent everything that day.

22:40 I think as climbers, we can all relate that there are styles that we are not good at and we typically always default to a negative mindset. As Louis always teaches, what we say to ourselves can be rephrased into a much more positive mindset. Terrific video and lessons.

A comment on your videos overall, over time: I really appreciate that you have a real diversity of people with you. Women, men, different climbing levels, body types, and even skin colors and likely ethnic backgrounds. If I knew my accents better, I’d probably find you’re also representing a range of the UK districts or London neighborhoods as well. ;) But my point is that along with your very welcoming nature, you consistently portray that climbing is for everyone, which is fantastic for the sport. Thank you.

Regarding the mindset discussion at the end, years a ago I was working on a top-rope climb in my gym and it did not go well, and when I got down I just said "Well, that sucked." So the next time I got on the wall to try again I said "Ok, time to suck less". That quickly became my mantra for climbing and many other things in life. I find it humorous, but also motivational.

This video came at the perfect time for me. I'm neurodivergent, I'm a novice climber, and I'm currently learning to drive... And struggling with it. I reluctantly accepted today that I'm going to have to swap from a manual to an automatic because I have coordination difficulties. After an emotional driving lesson, I decided to let off steam with a quick bouldering session. Although I still managed to climb a few techy problems and made progress on a more power-based one, my movements weren't very fluid, so if course my brain was going "that's because you're clumsy and stupid and your coordination is always going to be rubbish". What a shitty, mean thing to say to myself. So instead, looking at the evidence... I've been climbing for 14 months. I'm neurodivergent, I have a connective tissue disorder and several other chronic conditions, I'm in my 40s, postmenopausal and a working parent, and I'm currently stronger, more flexible, braver and more movement-literate than at any other time in my life. I'm tenacious, and I've worked really hard to make progress in something I love, but which didn't come naturally, and I'm improving all the time, and even do moves sometimes that impress other climbers. I'm pretty nifty at slabs and anything in a corner, and I have damn good balance, which is something I couldn't say a year ago! Thanks for the mindset tips. I'm glad I've just talked myself round to a different point of view. 😅 Also, Rotimi is an excellent student and so positive! Would love to see more collabs between you guys. ❤

Love this video. It's excellent advice for climbers of all skill levels, especially that feeling of being judged or embarrassed. Literally last night I fell off a v4 slab and rolled my ankle pretty bad. Felt like a tit. The centers staff were with me right away with first aid, and other climbers came to make sure I was alright and to praise my effort on a harder route. Love this sport, and love coaches like Louis who make us achieve our best with kind words and encouragement!

For the Power boulder, if you look at Louis attempt right about 10:52, his left leg toe had pushed his leg up first and then match while Rotimi 11:18 his toes weren't pushed in much and hence his body was sinking down too much. Im sure if he clawed his left toe more and pushed his hip up and left he would of held on better

I think that the things you tell yourself vs the things you feel at that time and the way these two things impact each other is comparable to your emotional state and the music you listen to. Yes, you can make yourself happier by listening to happy music, but that only works when you're already kind of happy or at least neutral. When you listen to happy music when you're depressed it's only going to make you feel more miserable and it will only frustrate you a lot. So if I feel kinda neutral about a boulder and I hype myself up, that generally works well. But when I'm really insecure for some reason it won't work any more. Instead, what I notice works best, I try to simply get rid of all feelings altogether. This allows me to just send it without trying my best, but also without being dragged down by my insecurity. Hopefully, after trying a few times, I lose my insecurity and I can see myself doing it if I try a bit harder, which then allows me to hype myself up and enter a different, more positive mental state. In other words: the things you tell yourself and the things you feel should not be too distant from each other, or it won't work. And if I feel really insecure, it's best to enter a mental state of 'not caring' too much and just try and see what happens. I hope this makes sense.

"How do you gauge progress if you're not sending" As someone who grew up playing a lot of Pokemon and other video games lol I think of it as win or lose, you still gain exp. Just showing up and trying is more progress than not trying at all. I also look at how much better I got at the individual moves. If I couldn't do a move before, but now I can do it, that's progress. If I was looking sketchy on a move, but now I look clean, that's progress. If it used to take me over a minute to do a climb and now I can do it in less than 30 seconds, that's progress. I think defining progress is one of the key ideas all climbers should do to help strengthen their mindset when going into sessions

Where does one find pants like the ones Louis is wearing?
@grdnxy3 ай бұрын
Regarding the question on how to measure progress if you don't finish boulders, I usually just decide that wherever I fall of is the top of that route for that day for me. Someone else decided, somewhat arbitrarily, where the route ends, so why shouldn't I get to decide where it ends for this day. And if on another day I manage to go past my previous "top", I can mark down progress in my little notebook of what I topped that day.
