What is an infinitive clause? What is an infinitive phrase? You might be interested to learn that this sentence includes an infinitive clause (“to learn that...”). It’s a clause that includes an infinitive followed by a noun clause used together as a complement to what preceded it. Well, that sounds complicated, but if you watch the lesson with me, we’ll go through it step-by-step. You’ll learn the construction, usage, and have plenty of examples and practice. Let’s start.
Take the quiz on this lesson here: www.engvid.com/advanced-english-grammar-infinitive-clause-infinitive-phrase/

Sir this is really an informative and doubt clearing lecture. Besides, I have been watching your all clause related lectures to clarify my doubts which often neglected by our class teachers. Sir please make more elaborated lectures on "embedded clauses" as in literature reading we often come across with such a single sentence containing 10 -12 lines , mixing 5-8 clauses in a single sentence. Sir you are great. Your work towards improving knowledge in English literature would be remembered the entire world till this materialistic world survive against the aggression of some countries...

When parsing these phrases/ clauses, would they be seen as a separate clause, despite them not being marked with a conjunction? I think whenever I can put some sort of adverbial before the "to" I should see it as a full-on clause. Like, "I did this in order to x", would the infinitive clause be a separate, though dependent, clause? Thanks

In the last example of infinitive phrases, "that you're special" isn't a noun clause? It has a subject (you) and a verb (are). So it would be an example of an infinitive clause, not infinitive phrase. If I am mistaken could you please tell me why?

5:00 Isn't the sentence ambiguous? 1. Ask him (what?) so that he finds out what she wanted, or 2. Ask him (why?) so that you find out what she wanted. In the first case the infinitive clause is the object of 'ask', the thing we want him to do. In the second case it's the reason why you should ask him. The first meaning is probably the intended one but I'm not sure if the second meaning is also possible.

What is an example of a sentence with an infinitive clause? Can an infinitive clause begin with a subordinating conjunction? For example, in this sentence, "To visit Los Angeles so that you arrive on time requires a 5 hour drive," is the infinitive clause, "To visit...on time," due to the subordinating conjunction "so that" beginning the noun phrase up to but not including the verb, "requires"? Thanks.

Hi Adam, suppose we have the following sentence : ( I forgot to bring my camera ) and I want to make a sentence to regret that situation. Which verb do I have to regret about ,forgot or bring ? I mean where is the main verb . I wish I hadn't forgotten to bring my camera. OR I wish I had brought my camera.
@fredylopez2477
@fredylopez2477 2 жыл бұрын
I WISH I HADN'T FORGOTTEN TO BRING MY CAMERA. The main verb is "to forget" 'cause that's the first action, even though it's a causative verb. - the second one refers to the "camera", the action of bringing the camera not the action of forgetting to bring it. Well this is my point of view. Thanks for minding my comment.
@AhmedZAli-ee1nj
@AhmedZAli-ee1nj 2 жыл бұрын
@@fredylopez2477 Thank you very much , but in our teacher's book (guide), the author of the book regards the role of verb forget as a negative adverb : that means the action of the second verb " bring " never happens that's why when he regretted the situation he set affirmative sentence " I wish I had brought my camera.
@fredylopez2477
@fredylopez2477 2 жыл бұрын
@@AhmedZAli-ee1nj You're very welcome pal. Well that's another way to say the same thing but in another words, like this ; - "I wish I had brought my camera." - "I wish I hadn't forgotten to bring my camera". And that's true, 'cause the action of bringing, never happened, but the action of forgetting did happened, 'cause; - I forgot to bring the camera. AND - I didn't bring the camera. Forget and bring are both negative situations to me, according to what I typed above, so I would regret the action of forgetting NOT bringing. 'cxuse that's the first action that occurred or happened.
