It took me about 8 hard hours to really get comfortable backwards. My best advice and the key for me was to think with your feet. Going straight backwards is actually quite difficult because eventually you will need to correct your balance as you start off slow. This is the most difficult part. If you think with your feet, and do something like a mini carve, you get the motions of correcting balance much easier. Either start by mounting going backwards or going forwards then transitioning. The latter was easier for me. Once you start going backwards, think with your feet and push down on one heel, say your left, then with your right. You end up doing mini carves backwards. This allows you to get the body movements down and go slow at the same time. It's not perfect, but that's where it clicked for me. Then you can start to build speed and begin turning your head, etc. And of course riding straight. For short distances, like a pendulum, this method isn't necessary, but for longer than a few feet, it may help.

So learning to pendulum last winter, turned out to be the single most crucial addition to my riding skills. It affected every aspect of riding in that it trained me on how much and when to swing my arms, and really get my whole body involved when riding. This led to greater stability with every turn and carve, uneven or wet terrain, and being able to PIVOT on the hardest trail sections. So so valuable, and increased the fun factor 1000%. Also, working on it is a great core workout and you only need about a 4ft square of space to do it. Crazy.
@lukastanasiuk5722
@lukastanasiuk5722 Жыл бұрын
Yeah honestly after this video and levelling up a few times during this video, I have seen a pretty big improvement in my ability to ride on this type of terrain you mention! For some reason I didn't even think about that, but what a welcome bonus!

Any tips? This is what I want to learn, I won’t be riding backwards that much (for safety)..but I’m thinking I can do this while waiting for the red light to go green (sometimes it’s stop and go every 2 meters
@TimTimEUC
@TimTimEUC Жыл бұрын
@@Cons2911 well how I did it is starting on the corner of my deck, using the railings to grab if needed, and gradually increasing the amount of time rocking back and forth each day. The main thing is just doing it every day, even if it's just for 5 minutes. It really works the body at first, now it's effortless, like riding. After I was able to feel comfortable doing it on the deck, when riding even if there was no traffic at an intersection, I'd try and pendulum at 30% of stops. Now I just do it when needed, or when I've been riding forward for too long and just need to change things up.

If you want to learn to go backwards and to pendulum with no stress all you need to do is practice going forward very slow on gravel or a looser surface than asphalt. As you go forward practice twisting your body left and right making the wheel do small pivotal turns. Getting comfortable twisting your body hard left and right builds the confidence and muscle memory needed to pendulum and go backwards. Before you know it you’ll feel comfortable and have the skills to ride backwards and it will be a natural transition.

I taught myself to pendulum by first, learning how ride and do a figure 8 backwards, then, riding really really S L O W in both directions in a controlled manner (no twist saves or swinging arms everywhere) this would be slow, looking at the sights walking speed. Once you master the art of the snail, then you can do smooth, tight pendulums for the entire duration of a stoplight. If you look at performers on 5 foot manual unicycles, juggling pins at the same time, they do pendulums this way, while tossing juggling pins to their other partner on another unicycle.

I really appreciate you guys doing this for the community. Adam has crazy skills. This motivates me to work on becoming a more complete rider.

Best instructional on this EVER. So many skimp on detail and actual video of the learning progress. Thanks Good to see a “newbie” perspective as Adam can make it look ridiculously easy (although I’m sure his first attempts were similar)

Who is going to be the first one to full send the lyon25 though? That would put us on the map. And the wheel would have to be a freaking tank
