I have fairly good foot-to-foot technique, the part that got me on moguls was the absorption part. Ever since I've been hitting jumps on the snow and working on my landings my mogul skiing has become A LOT better. I also don't fear gaining some speed on a mogul and jumping off of it a bit. I also will sometimes practice simply skiing across the fall line and absorbing the moguls(as instructed by Deb as a drill), working on my absorption technique. Working on the whole absorption thing has helped me a lot.

You have to have your hands in front of you when doing moguls, like a boxer getting ready to do short jabs ... not punch, not rearing back, like you would when punching, cause that will twist your shoulder. but like short jabs .. your hands are already out front when you jab and you have to keep them in front, pole plants are jabs, not round house punches.

Love it and get the foot to foot which for you both is so subtle. I am not getting the retraction. When does that happen? You are both so good, hardly notice these events :)
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong3 жыл бұрын
The head never mores up and down because the legs retract. At the trough or bottom of the bump the legs get long. At the top of the bump the legs get short, or absorb, or retract.

I always find it difficult on the pulling back move when getting to the top of the bump. I think if I could grasp that feeling of pulling back instead of feeling like I’m pulling a wheely over the bump I can finally enjoy fall line through the bumps in complete control as an old guy… any drills I can use to not only sense that movement but help lock it in to muscle memory?
@Osnosis3 жыл бұрын
Donna Weinbrecht taught me that backwards bicycle concept 20 years ago! Very cool. BTW, NEVER have your feet more than shoulder width apart. Natural stance is best.
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong3 жыл бұрын
natural is generally hip width. Did Bobby say shoulder? meant hip I am sure
@Osnosis3 жыл бұрын
@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong Here, the resort teaches the 'cowboy' stance, which is WAY too wide (for so many reasons), and I believe it gets beginner/intermediate skiers in the wrong position, and with the wrong ideas. There is always the schism about separation in the vertical vs. horizontal plane. I recognize that at 60-75 mph your legs will be fairly wide coming out of a high speed turn, and almost immediately heading into another, but that's not most recreational skiers. With varying width skis and different body types, people will ski slightly differently in a 'natural' stance. You both look fantastic in the bumps; that bicycle concept is difficult to assimilate, so I teach it somewhat differently.

Such fun to watch, but confusing. At about 40 s in, Bobby says like pedaling a bicycle backwards, but the motion he executes is the normal rotation for forward pedaling on a bicycle. I hope Deb and Bobby don't mind me suggesting this video, which explains the role of backpedaling in absorption: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bpvPg4OtfdGZg8U Watching this frame-by-frame in slow motion shows WHEN to pull back: about the same time as you make the turn, coming out of your absorption. Also, you can see Bobby's hips push forward to make it work. So the sequence is: from home position (see Dan DiPiro's book) of standing more or less upright in the trough of the mogul, you switch weight and compress to absorb the next mogul. Now with most weight already on outside ski, execute turn while pulling back and pushing hips forward. I think if you can CONSTANTLY feel pressure on the shin and do your foot-to-foot weight shifting, that's most of it. "It's not the 70s." Indeed, but I still miss the elegance of Stein Erickson with his leather boots nominally affixed to (probably) 215-cm wooden skis, feet, and skis exactly parallel and close. Well, I guess that was the 60s, and don't forget to counter-rotate! For the 70s, there's a nice video of Jean-Claude Killy blasting through some bumpy powder. If you were on a chairlift and saw someone skiing like that today, you would still watch.
