Head movement is to throw off and or delay the opponents timing and is done in a type of rhythm. Slipping is to avoid the opponents punch and is done with timing off the rhythm (or broken rhythm). Also, the side to side slipping technique is good because it gets you into position to counter with leverage and move again. It is bad because it requires alot of natural ability and athletic "keeness" to do correctly. The other bad point is that because it is aggressive countering, if the fighter using it is not a particularly powerful puncher with a formidable chin they will end up with the opposite effect of what they we're looking for (see Liston vs Patterson 1 & 2) Got it? Good.

0:55-0:58 Johnny, I disagree with what you said that if you slip to one side that you have "less power, less speed, less mobility". If you slip a punch to a side (let's say the left side for instance), your body weight is now on your left leg. On top of that you are now crouching. This is a perfect position from which to launch an explosive left hook/ uppercut by springing your body weight back up behind it.
@expertboxing8 жыл бұрын
I agree with you. That it's possible to slip to one side without losing power. But I also agree with myself in that you lose absolute power when you go more towards one leg rather than 2 legs. Ideally, you would like to slip over as minimally as possible. The pros are not trying to slip as far to one side as possible, even IF they want a hook from that side, and neither should you. The technique I share here will allow you stay more in the middle even if you want to slip, and that maximizes all your possibilities.

+expertboxing Very informative, thank you, Johnny. I'll practice this technique more as it seems more practical.

You are really an excellent teacher. I've done this technique and could do it reflexively, but I could never quite teach it to any of my students. You explain a lot of key concepts very clearly that most people, even those who can do it, can't explain so well.
@expertboxing11 жыл бұрын
YES. I believe in that theory. I teach that in my basic slipping technique. Rotating out of the angle is half the work, and this way you don't have to come off-axis so much.

Hey, I just got a question, my Muay Thai teacher uses rotation to slip punches. Pretty much he taught me to just turn my shoulders from the hip and my head will move out of the way. very little leaning required. I tried and it's a little misleading at first but once i practiced a few times, I realized it was really enough to dodge the punches. It's really effective, especially since it puts me in a position to counter with a lot of rotation. Let me know what you think!

subscribed. Thank you so much! I have a question, some people are afraid to attack first because they afraid of being hit, they only counter. How do they learn to not afraid and attack first?
@expertboxing10 жыл бұрын
Try FEINT first, then attack. Or use a fast attack like a jab. It takes time to develop confidence in your movement.
@expertboxing11 жыл бұрын
There's no harm. You're not committing to any movement and not leaving yourself vulnerable. If you have to move more, then move more. The goal is to move as little as needed.

Awesome Video man, very enlightening. I am having problems getting used to pivoting both feed, do you do a drill for that or just try to add it into heavy bag or shadow boxing stuff? It may just be an unfamiliar movement for me. I love what it can do for MMA setting up kicks without the tell of pivoting your front foot for spinning hook, switch kick or back kicks. Thanks for the video.

Why lowing the hands while moving? When you move to the left, you low the right, when you move to right, you low the left. Is there a reason for that?
@expertboxing11 жыл бұрын
"Walking into a punch" is not slipping. Slipping is supposed to be evading the punch. You need to be faster or smarter. There are many ways to get past a strike.

It can work but you'd have to worry about a knee or a kick coming your way after you slip. I'd stick to blocking in MMA not unless you are very good at slipping and have really sharp eyes to notice things your opponent is setting up for.

Seeing this boxing head movement clip a while back as part 1 is the only video that explain the slip trick with energy efficiency, I've been a BJJ grappler guy for about 1/2 a decade & injured for about the same amount of time doing gentle therapy on shoulder max positions soon to return back again & doing a lot of leg flexibility exercises. With boxing I use to try and get heaps BUT only a very little amount of training whenever I could with a real live partner & his name was John also, but he was a Tae Kwon Do guy. Being 1 on 1 or more fighting partners I get the best boxing experience but he no longer likes combative arts, also as temporary option long ago I modified a floor to ceiling ball attaching a striking limb -made of very light tube & padded limb attach above the ball + industrial glasses & mouth guard for safety, it hits back fast unpredictably so it's sort of trains a very little skill, other than that I shadow box against others recorded on KZbin screen, actually come to think of it; that brings to mind it would be a fun aerobic boxing workout to do that in actual real time on a sign in webcam & call it shadow boxing web cam tournament or something. I might deliver this message in your part 2 clip, just in case you don't get to see this message I guess. Thx for some science behind a bit of boxing skills...

+expertboxing Pa pa`s got a brand new bag! Does that mean Tyson was dodging the jab wrong because he moved off center the way you said but seemed accurate with his counter hook, maybe it`s because of his amazing hand speed? Lloyd Honeyghan used to move his head constantly but was crude and off center.
