There are many great riders who can carve well but what separates Ryan from the rest is how smooth he is while he's carving and buttering. It's like watching someone doing ballet on a snowboard.

Love the video Tommie. I've been going up to the mountains recently with some friends, so I've been scouring KZbin for a bunch of videos, and yours are always recommended. I love that you used the word "unlocked". It's one of my favorite words to use because of the meaning behind it. Tomorrow, I'm going to try using more control of my ankle, and practicing at the beginning of the day just getting deep into my toe-side and heel-side turns. I'm stoked!

Quick question: I've been carving for like 2 seasons now (thanks Ryan). As soon as I significantly tilt my board, the turn radius is just WAY too small and it feels like undoable at higher speeds. Now I'm riding a twin freestyle board (Bataleon Goliath). Is that the reason why? Your boards' sidecut looks way more straight than mine. Thanks
@paddor4 жыл бұрын
Tommie Bennett Thanks for the offer. I was hoping on a simple answer. Not comfortable sharing videos, and also not on insta. Like, it works, I can carve, but I’m nowhere near the ground with my body and it’s already making a very tight turn. I’ll try and see if I can try a board that looks more like Ryan’s or yours. But I’ll have to wait till next season. Switzerland just closed down all ski resorts today :/

@@paddor tilt your board less, do it on better snow with more grip (early morning groomers) and put your hiback forward lean into max. position Choose more mellow slopes. 3BT of Bataleon is indeed introducing a dead zone into your carves and a tight shortcut also making it harder, but if you put it more gentle on edge with less angle, you will get your wide turns. And on laydown the early gentle crouched down super bent knees entrance to eurocarve with a slight countercarve shoulder rotation is the key point, unfortunately all the tutorials miss that point. Most people do way too late touch downs, and also edging up way to hard, resulting in tiny Eurocarves. If you go down early to ground, on entrance of the curve, it stetches your body without any extra force needed to stretch. Entering late, you need to do an exhausting knee stretch, and the laydown phase will be super short or even result in ass up hunched down carve, far from stretch. But entering early is a mind game, as you basically fall down downwards into the fall line, head forward, which most people are afraid of.
@paddor4 жыл бұрын
Winter Zahn Thanks for the advice. I actually should try it on better snow, earlier in the morning. And my high back lean is already at maximum. I’ll look into getting lower earlier. What do you mean by “countercarve sholder rotation”?
@winterzahn4 жыл бұрын
@@paddor countercarve means, if you go into a toeside turn, then try to twist shoulders, like if you want to continue backside turn. Do this immediadeley after edge change before touching ground. This opens the toe side turn into a long radius toeside turn

Which type of snowboard is the best to carve like this? Cause i have a really soft board (bataleon disaster) and i dont feel really confortable when i get too much speed...
@rushthezeppelin4 жыл бұрын
You definitely want a stiff board for carving otherwise it just won't be able to load up properly for faster carves. Stiff and bigger sidecut radius is the way to go. Just don't go full on knapton twin specs right of the bat though. You have to ease your way into it so start with something that is medium stiff (probably like a 7-8) and probably around a 7-8m sidecut radius.

Hey Tommie. Just a question. I wear size 10 boots and I ride a regular width board. With my shoe size, should I go up to wide or just stay at a regular width board?
@carsongeorge45163 жыл бұрын
It depends on your stance angles and how leaned over you get the board. As you carve deeper you will definitely notice if your board is not wide enough because you will get boot out which is no fun. Enjoy the ride and happy carving.

I heard a lot of talking about using your ankles/moving the ankles.. Actually your ankles are stuck in the boots, and the boots are strapped to the board. There is no movement at the ankle. The feet stay in place. Even if you tilt the board Heel-side or Toe-side, if you look at the Ankles, you'll see that the Feet stay at the same angle relative to the Shins the whole time. No movement at the ankle. This is what happens: You keep the upper body loose and leveled, knees bent, and you rock at the hips (posterior/anterior pelvic tilts) with extension/flexion of the knees depending on what you wanna do with your carve, and/or your style. So it's not Ankle movement, but movement at the Hips and the Knees. It's just basic understanding of the Human body and biomechanics of the movement. Now I'm not saying this to hate. It's just a little correction. I enjoyed the content, and I've watched a few videos from this channel already. That being said, I do think that if you really want people to Subscribe and grow the channel more, one important step is to make sure that the information that is put out is accurate.
@AlanLamb114 жыл бұрын
When you are on edge your knees are already somewhat bent so it makes more sense to think of raising or lowering your ankles than trying to specify knees bent at a 30 degree angle vs a 20 degree angle which no one actually will know without crazy training compared to saying raise your ankles 2 inches or lower them to just an inch off the ground, etc.
@Dan-oj9xp3 жыл бұрын
No, no, no, everything about your post is just awful. Please do not try to correct a professional in their field just because you don't understand what they are saying. It is ABSOLUTELY ankle movement. Just because feet are in boots and boots are in bindings doesn't mean you can't open (extend) and close(flex) your ankles to twist your snowboard. This is a really fundamental concept for advanced and expert riding, and is one that is often overlooked and misunderstood by beginners who think they should turn with their back foot, and this misunderstanding is also one that leads to a lot of bad riding habits and eventually a plateau in one's ability to progress. Read a technical manual from literally any international, professional association on snow sport instruction, (AASI is the American Association of Snowboard Instructors, CASI is Canada, BASI is in Britain, there are several more....) and you would learn that Tommie's description is 100% accurate. Or you could go and talk to other snow sport professionals (you know, like Tommie) who do this professionally in some aspect, either racing, coaching, instructing, competing, etc, but then again if you don't trust advice on a carving video from Ryan knapton.....good luck ever learning, you must be a snowboarding God.

Unpopular opinion: not all but a large portion of snowboard carving vids especially how to vids, aren't really carving but like sideways tripods, dragging your body on the ground and or hands and then pushing back up with them isn't really carving. You can drag your hand but it's nuanced, if your basically supporting your self or dragging your whole body your doing something but it ain't carving. The korua shapes promo vids do a great job showing actual carving. Don't know where this laying on the ground trend came from but it's whack. Same goes for just resting your whole body on your forearm. Down vote me, I will die on this super niche dumb hill.
