I'd like to add to what another person said about your videos. I like How you keep your Videos informative, Packed full of information as well as " Family Friendly " . How you handle yourself ( Both Your Language as well as your teaching ) is FANTASTIC. What you are teaching NEEDS to be taught and heard. THANK YOU SIR AND GOD BLESS.

Hello sir. I have been watching your videos since late last spring. I got into you because I was looking for survival videos that were high quality and taught by people who seem to know what they were doing. At the same time I got heavily into Dave Canterbury, and the Pathfinder School. Imagine my surprise when just recently I found out you were affiliated with them. It makes sense though since you teach the same quality material that they do. I thank you for your videos, but most importantly, I thank you so much for the service that you give to our country allowing me to watch these videos.

👍👍👍 Good Intel brother! It's mind over matter! You must Improvise adapt and overcome! If you have faith in yourself you can achieve anything! Utilize the 40% rule and never give up or let doubt come into your mind! BBQ snake over those hot coals ain't bad! A couple of bullion cubes and a hand full of rice would make a good snake soup! The hungry wolf will eat just about anything to survive! Stay frosty and Simper Fi!

Andrew, that is an accomplishment! My respect for you goes up with every video. I know Dave Canterbury from camping with him at the old Dirttime encampments in California. I’ve been taking courses for a couple of decades, so I went through Sigma3 Survival School’s 45 day Instructor course last fall. Sad to say, it was one of my hardest decisions and still haunts me, is I tapped out during the “knife only” Scout week. Up until that time, I had done very well, but I’m 66 years old and a type two diabetic and I didn’t want to be an emergency in the wild. It’s haunted me ever since. I’m not bitter about it, just realize my aging body has limitations and it’s not able to handle potentially not eating for a week metabolically. It’s been offered I can retake that portion, if I pay for it again, but wonder if it’s worth risking my health for ego. Anyway, I continue training. I did a day with “Ancient Wisdom Survival School” on Saturday, emphasis on plant knowledge. Again, my heartfelt congratulations to you. You will make a great instructor, I love your attitude and respect your hard earned experience. You’re awesome!👍

I think this is definitely one of the most important vids you've put out. You've pretty much convinced me to never attempt this course. I take this as constructive criticism and more or less a warning that should have been understood years ago for students, it would have saved a lot of time and energy for all concerned. There should be a prerequisite of military background only, are probably Special Forces in this case, which BTW pretty much includes all the Pathfinder instructors. Being a civilian myself would I be able to go through the course? Yes I would, that's the problem, I wouldn't know when to quit. I would just keep going till I passed out , went into a coma, or had a heart attack. At least we have one thing in common, you're a fellow pipe smoker so I'll keep watching your vids and learn what I can, thanks for all your hard work!

I've never attended a Pathfinder course, can't imagine I ever will, but most of these skills (ok I'll admit some are rusty now) needed for this I learned in Boy Scouts. The Army taught me how far I could go. But you don't need a military background, it's an outdoors skills course, not tactical. I'm too old and fat and lazy and poor to attempt it nowadays but I think if I set my mind to it and resurrected my navigation skills I might pull it off. Maybe. Or maybe be one the 90%! LOL But you shouldn't let a non-military background hold you back from it.

I grew up in west Texas and rattlesnakes are all over the place on the ranch land. The Sweetwater, Texas, Rattlesnake Roundup is a yearly event. Deep fried rattlesnake is popular there. It's like trying to eat corn on the cob....except the snake bones are the corn and the little bits of meat are in between. For survival, it's a lot better to boil down the snake into broth, meat and bones.

Though I've always had saws for cutting firewood, I usually find dead limbs, tear them off of the tree, or just harvest off the ground, set them upon a rock, using it as a fulcrum, then stomping them to a size useful for maintaining a decent fire. Most of the branches were normally about the diameter of my forearm, and so sawing was unnecessary. You seem never to do this--is my technique NOT a good idea?

Funny fact, timber rattlesnakes are not really a huge threat to anyone and are actually a protected species in many areas. That said, snake isn't bad eating once they stop moving. Also, frog gigging is a useless skill in my AO as are a few of the other things they stress so highly in these courses. People need to understand that these courses are designed for a specific AO and not all of the skills apply elsewhere. I still laugh about the contractor garbage bags, that and the Gorilla tape! Gorilla tape is the only duck tape I have ever had seriously fail on multiple occasions except for the dollar store stuff. It really is useless.

Average weight was ~20 pounds however, the most we packed with materials got up to 60-70 pounds. I think if you were to train with an average weight of 15kg you’d be alright. Maybe throw in a log carry near the last mile of a ruck every now and then.

You missed the boat with the Rattler. When I was 19 I killed one over 6 feet in length. Filleted the meat in strips about the same size and length as a # 2 wood pencil. Mom took a cast iron frying pan and fried the strips. Sweet meat , chewy and darn good. My girl friend came over and with the snake we had frog legs. ( I promised her a wild meal ) She liked the drumsticks with the little bones in them ( frog legs ). Really liked the thin strips of the white , sweet meat and wanted to know what it was . I said I would tell her in 2 weeks. 2 weeks later I told her and she turned GREEN.( later she got even with me , married me , so far for 56 years ) By the way the center section of the snake skin became a hat band for my Stetson.

Between you and the Corporal, Yup, hooked! Im a Yukoner, be 41 in march, and (assuming the world doesnt go completely insane) my personal goal is to go to all three courses before Im 50. Im reasonably confident in my skill sets sure, but Ive learned a ton between you two in particular. Quite confident in the beginner, but your description of the intermediate suggests i might just have an interesting challenging time! Any suggestions for courses in Canada in the meantime? Also, do we get to find out how you dispatched that rattler? Everything I have up here that is a potential threat requires a substantial amount of lead and copper to appropriately attend to.

I’ve noticed that a large majority of these KZbin ‘bushcraft/survival’ personalities eventually align themselves with SRO sooner or later. I get that Dave Canterbury seems to have a strong presence in the industry because he was once on discovery but I still don’t understand the appeal. Apart from wilderness first aid I can’t seem to find any professional certification for Bushcraft in the civilian world. I understand there’s SERE training courses in place for enlisted and PMC’s but simply attending SERE doesn’t make one a professional, nor does being a SERE instructor seem to carry over professionally into the civilian world. I suppose the ultimate question is; why attend (and therefore ultimately promote) Self Reliance Outfitters whilst still having access to military programs in your particular situation?

First, congrats ... and, of course, thank you for your service. Lots of good comments below, all on point. No need to repeat them. But just an FYI. At 1:38 you say 10 passing out of 50 is a very low attrition rate. No, attrition refers to those who don't make it, not to those who do. So 10 of 50 it is a very low success rate and a very high attrition rate. Not being snarky or negative. Just my contribution to the learning curve. You teach me, now I'm teaching you. That's how it works. All good. See you on the next video.
