They put a post on github basically registering interest for Ryzen AI to have a Linux port. It'll get their eventually, but for now you're either stuck with CUDA or using CPU for running AI workloads at a fraction of speed you can get with an Nvidia GPU. Intel, AMD, Apple and Arm CPU manufacturers need to catch up on software front mainly, Nvidia hardware is nothing extraordinary.

When the Ryzen 5 2400G came out in early 2018, it was already impressive because it was capable of playing most games at 1080p without a discrete GPU. Of course, the games that launched since then have become much more graphically demanding than the games at the time, but it did essentially what the 8000G CPUs are probably gonna do. I don't think the iGPU will be powerful enough to play games like Cyberpunk or Hogwarts Legacy fluently at 1080p with high graphics settings, but you'll have to go down to either medium or low graphics settings, like you did with the 2400G at the time. But it worked, and of course you could play less demanding titles at higher settings, so it's still a great option for entry-level gaming.

The biggest 8000G with DDR5-7600 should get a usable experience in Cyberpunk at 1080p Low with AFMF enabled. For Alan Wake II and Avatar I'm not so certain though... But if you're on a budget so tight you'd go for an APU, then buying games that are still $30-40 is probably ruled out anyway.

@@GB-zi6qr As long as they interact and develop with the community the way they are doing, no matter the intention (every business and human is inherently selfish, that is just how nature on this Planet evolved. Businesses have to make money, otherwise they close.), I will support and cherish them. Nvidia is way more greedy and selfish (Not open-sourcing drivers, allowing DLSS3 only on 40 series cards, price gauging, etc.). I am proud to be team red, update arch linux and having the latest drivers for my hardware. They are currently the best alternative, if that changes, I will support the other team again. Hawk Point has an NPU (so the Ryzen 8000G for desktop and 8000U/H/HX for laptop) of 16 TOPS. When combined with the iGPU's INT4 capability that turns out to 34 TOPS in total. This makes for a handy little office machine on Desktop that can do Copilot, some light Adobe Firefly stuff and still have an iGPU that can do basic video editing. This is practically speaking the perfect CPU for the people who manage companies social media accounts. The people who will want a full-kahoot CPU with an NPU, but who also have no need for a dedicated GPU, will be almost zero. There is no point in making that product. If you want enough TOPS to beat the ever living snot out of Hawk Point it's called the RX 7600. With 32 compute units, at significantly higher clocks than the 12 compute units in Hawk Point, you're looking at the north of 52 TOPS.

Now just make sure that the OEM's actually follow through with this, for example Lenovo, who appears to be an important partner to AMD, does not have the NPU enabled on a yoga laptop with a 7840U CPU. I hope this is just an oversight from Lenovo and will be fixed shortly, since the NPU's are such a huge thing for AMD now.

As an owner of the Radeon HD 7990 (AMD's last dual GPU card) I'm not so certain that the time is right. RDNA3 has only split off the memory controllers and cache into "side hinged" chiplets, but the main GCD still handles PCIe, media engine, and critically: dispatch. Until AMD can "glue together" a chiplet approach where some kind of I/O die (think the Ryzen approach, but without the memory controller) can be attached to an arbitrary number of compute chiplets, that each in turn are connected to memory controllers and cache, I don't think building huge GPUs is financially viable for the consumer.

@@andersjjensen They have patents for multi GCD setups, the controller lives on the 'master' GCD. So not impossible for something like N31+1 to exist, but yeah not very likely.

All I wish for is the companies stop slapping AI label everywhere. If anything I’d rather prefer AMD to have more focus on 3d rendering so people, myself included, can have mostly AMD workstations (cpu, gpu), when at the moment nvidia is a clear winner.

Drivers took a year to deliver a functional IPU driver and ONNX stack. On top of that, you need the DirectML versions to leverage it. These are barely released much less mature. You don't provide IPU drivers on Linux.

@@OfficialNakatsuMegami some people say H265 is still better than AV1 in certain aspects, and h266 is in the works, AMD needs to develop a completely new encoder/decoder engine, they are far behind intel and nvidia in that respect (specially in output quality) they need to start leveraging their FSR tech plus the fake frame tech in video ENC/DEC both in conversion and live reproduction, thats were fake frame should really be used (audio and images or pics also) reconstructing or enhancing old footage, damaged tapes, corrupted vids, files.

@@MARKXHWANG There is about everything wrong with your statement. 1) AMD currently has the fastest AI accelerator for Datacenter. Granted, AMDs AI software stack is not as plug-and-play as NVidia, which turns some away. Still doesn't change the scoreboard in raw hardware numbers. 2) A lot of both individuals, corporations and government institutions are not exactly keen on the cloud model of AI. Anyone who is unwilling to run their programs, and store their data, on other people's computers is going to be doubly cautious when it comes to training an AI for business logic (or intelligence) operations, and will want to do both the training and the inferencing locally.
